Our brakes sends out a loud screech but only while it's backing up. (78k miles)
Is it time to change the pads?
Should we service the brakes at the dealership or private auto shop?
The scene: 22k miles on a 2010 Prius II. Loud rear brake squeal, worse when backing, but still present going forward at low speeds. Does not seem to go away even when warmed up. I put it off having it checked at first because a little rust on the pads is very common in my climate.
At the dealer, the tech tells me I've worn completely through the pads and scored the rotor! At 22k! On a Prius, for crying out loud! It's not my driving, either, because that's the first I've ever had anything done to rear brakes on any car before 75k. The front brakes needed no attention at all. I challenged the service tech with these points; he even took me back into the shop to show me. The caliper pistons were moving freely, for what it's worth. Ultimately he just shrugged me off.
I had 2 brake related issues. First was a honking noise when pressing/releasing the brake pedal (covered by T-SB-0363-10, attached below). Second was rear brake squeaks, particularly when backing up (T-SB-0102-11, attached below). I had the squeak issue repaired under a previous TSB a few years ago, but the noise came back after a while, and the updated TSB includes replacing the pads and other parts.
View 8 RepliesSo my 2004 explorer 4.0 XLT sport has a strange clicking noise every so often. I first noticed it when I back out of a parking spot, at one point almost every time I hear a loud snap, sounds like a bolt breaking. Wheel is turned and backing up.
If I get out and have wife do it of course the noise is gone and doesn't reappear. Also if I drive down a parking lot slowly I can hear a clicking noise if I roll the windows down. This sounds like a nail in a tire, click, click click at regular intervals.
But, put the rig on a lift and you don't hear anything. Nothing, I am thinking I have a damaged axle up front but don't see anything out of the ordinary. No torn axle boots, no looseness, nothing. It's a 4x4 not full time so even in 2wd the front axles are turning.
I have a clicking/banging noise when I hit the brake while I am backing up. It only does it when the brakes are cool. I tried bringing it in to the dealership, with the service tech with me, no matter what I do drive forward and back hitting the brakes hard it won't do it. But as soon as the brake cools off and try backup from a drive way you can hear it and its annoying as hell. I thought it was ball joint went bad but they assure me it wasn't the ball joint.
The service tech said the brake pad expands when it heats up. Okay fine, but how come only my front left does it. I was thinking some spacer or clips fell off...
After having rear disc pads replaced, my 2003 Toyota Avalon makes a terrible noise backing out of the driveway in the morning. I think it must be rust or something--it never happens in ultra-dry weather. It is a very loud squeaking and moaning. It only happens backing up, and it goes away after a bit of driving. Normally I would not worry about what is likely a bit of surface rust, but this is INTENSE. Like, the neighbors across the street stare at us. Should I worry about this, or just live with it since the brakes perform fine after this initial period?
View 1 RepliesMy wife was driving the v this morning. While she was backing up in reverse from a parking space slowly , she felt that the brake pedal is stuck (very firm) while controlling the speed. The car then stops. She then switched to D to roll foward a bit and the brake was back to normal. Reverse again and it was fine too.
View 4 RepliesI just replaced my my k03s with another one with only 20k on it. After I did this, I noticed a loud screech sound when in WOT. The screech lasts a little bit after i left off the gas when revving in neutral. I've been doing research on here, and I've read that it could be a boost leak somewhere or even the turbo dying. The shaft play is minimal though.
View 17 RepliesI've been experiencing a loud clutch squeal or screech when I first engage the clutch after the car has been sitting for longer periods of time, overnight etc. It goes away after a few shifts and only returns after the car sits for a long period.
I brought it to the VW dealership since I'm still under warranty for a bit. After two visits the have come up with two hypotheses without any evidence. They claim to have not heard it or found anything wrong visually.
1) it could be a rear main seal leak. Or leak from somewhere on the tranny onto the cultch. When I first drive it is burned or wiped away. After putting on the lift they found no evidence of leaks. So hypothesis two:
2) Thy flywheel may be developing a bit of a patina of rust. After the clutch is engaged a few times, the rust is gone and the squeal goes away.
From the time I start the car till I shut her down I hear this loud screech. I thought belts but they are not the cause! 2001 elantra 5 speed transmission ...
View 3 RepliesI have a 2009 Hyundai Sonata which gets a sporadic high screech upon startup. I associate this sound the key left in the ignition after the car has already turned over. It will go away as soon as I shift into drive. Is this the problem with the ignition switch or starter? How difficult is this to diagnose as it only happens on occasion? Assuming it's the ignition switch, might I be damaging the starter if it continues?
View 19 RepliesI have a 2008 Ford Escape, and today I noticed that while backing out of my driveway (downhill) as I pressed the brake pedal it made this grinding noise, but when I got out of the car I looked through the tires and the rotors and pads were fine. I did not get a chance to check the inner side of the rotor or pad yet. What else could this noise be if it's not the brakes? It only makes this noise when I press the brake pedal which is why I thought it was the brakes.
View 3 RepliesI traded my 2007 Prius for the 2010 III Prius on 5/30. I had 5 wonderful days with it and on the 6th day, it started.
There is a loud creaking noise when the brake pedal is pushed and released.
The dealership contacted Toyota and did everything that was suggested to correct the problem and no luck.
I've a UK 2004 gen ii with 69000 miles on the clock. When coming to a stop and also when at a stand still if I press down the brake pedal I get a rather loud creaking sort of noise. I guess that's friction brake related as no noise with using brakes when driving. Also a high pitch squeal when driving and turning steering wheel slightly to the left that stops when you press the brake pedal.

View 3 RepliesLast night, on my way home, I suffered a catastrophic transmission failure in my 1991 2.3L 5 speed. Stepped on the clutch on an exit ramp from the freeway and was rewarded by a LOUD screech/grind, a stopped vehicle, and a transmission "locked" in 5th gear. The local HERO service pushed me out of traffic and I got towed home. Looks like a transmission transplant is in my immediate future. So - the question is, what year manual transmissions match up to a 1991 2.3L 4 cylinder, standard cab, 2WD? I need to start searching salvage yards.

View 5 RepliesI have a 2003 GMC Yukon XL 1500 4 WD. Ive been getting a loud bang ( like a hammer strike on the front frame) on occasion only after backing up and it happens after the truck moves forward a bit. You can almost feel the truck loading up and then it gives with a loud hammer like bang. Ive had a tech check the front end and do an alignment. I had thought it might be a brake hanging up.
View 2 RepliesThe car is under 25k miles. I have owned for less then 2 years. Recently, I notice a noise coming from the rear every time backing out the drive way. The sounds louder in the winter**. I have gone to 3 different dealers and non of them offered a remedy. Some say they cant reduplicate the issue so I scheduled a test drive with a tech. Was able to duplicate the issue, however the tech says its normal ( pad shift over time) and told me a lot of the newer carmy has the issue. I'm exhausted from going dealer to dealer and no remedy issue. They all said the same thing "its normal & there's nothing they can do".
View 2 RepliesI have an 06 Ford Expedition 2WD with 97,000 miles. Whenever I am backing up with the wheels turned hard to the right (such as backing out of a parking space) there is a loud pop on the driver's side after about 1/2 to 1 full wheel revolution (I am guessing about that part but that seems about right - the point is it's not real far). When I drive forward with the wheel turned the same way there is a similar sound, though less distinct. I have not heard it with the wheels turned left, and the sound only happens when the wheels are turning and it is one distinct pop (no grinding or clicking or anything, just one pop) on the drivers side. I have read guesses that cover pretty much every component on the front end.
View 9 RepliesSo I had my car at the dealer today. still is at the dealer. They say that they cant hear a loud pop when backing out and pulling into spots while cutting the wheel hard. I need to go back and show them tomorrow.
The noise occurs when stopping very hard it will pop about 3 times then if you pick up hard or step on it it also pops. then it pops when pulling in and out of parking spots and you cut the wheel hard.
Suspension popping in the front. I told them strut bearings but they said they were fine.....
