My 2008 prius suddenly quit on me while driving the dash went out when it did, however the lights and locks work, when I push the start button I get nothing.
View 14 RepliesI drive a 2008 Nissan Frontier, bought new in Nov. 2007 with 53,000 miles on it. A few months ago, at about 50,000 miles, an annoying clattering noise started coming out of the dash. The noise was coming from the vent area of the passenger side dash and occurs when I start the vehicle or adjust the AC from Max to norm. I went online and found that the noise occurs in many of the full size Nissan SUVs, and is a failing Vent Actuator part. Doing further research, I learned, the part is fairly cheap, but buried in the dash and difficult to get to.
Of course that means that labor is very expensive to replace this part. Nobody seems to want to take the time to replace the part, except the dealer who wants $500 labor to do it. I have found dash diagrams and since it is cooling off lam thinking about taking on the project myself. With the vehicle having such low mileage, and little stress being put on the part, I feel that the part is of low quality and replacement should be covered on some kind of warranty. Nissan probably feels it is not a safety issue, but the noise is very annoying, and certainly lowers the value of my vehicle, that has otherwise been pampered and in like new condition.
I tried to turn on my car this morning, but the "Ready" sign didn't go on. The whole display is black. "Check Engine" sign blinked briefly. Battery display shows the battery is "green". Everything else works - cd/radio/bluetooth, etc. As I tried to start it, the screen showed that the engine briefly charged the Prius battery, then it was all quite. I tried to wait and restart a few times, but still the display was all black and no "ready" sign. I WAS able to still move the car, but I didn't chance to drive it out of the garage. I just had it serviced (oil/fluid change). Small battery was replaced in July.
View 19 RepliesI bought a replacement bulb, swapped it out. No dice. I swapped over the passenger side low beam and still no dice. At this point I know its not the bulbs. I swapped in the original Driver's side light to the passenger side and it works. So now I have an extra bulb.
But the light is not working when I know the bulbs are good. Is this a fuse problem? It just happened one day while driving home from work the light shows up.
How should I go about fixing this and is it most likely a fuse that has gone out or something far worse?
Just bought a 2012 2.5l last week, and have a question about the MPG display on the dash. When I bought it from the dealer it had a full tank and it showed I had about 500+ miles left. Yesterday I filled up the tank again and now it only showed I have 405 miles, but as I drove it bounced around from 415-400. after driving about 35 miles its still at 405 miles. Just wondering if this is how it's supposed to be, if I have to reset something every time I fill up, or if something is wrong? I've always had mk4 so I'm not all up to date on the "new".
View 4 RepliesSo I'm not new to fixing this car but I'm now stuck. It is not the inhibitor switch, I had that replaced, and the car cranks so it is not the problem. In addition, the "P" shows up on the dash. Since the car cranks, its not the battery, it is showing 12.25V.
I am afraid it is the fuel pump. Looking for the specs for the fuel pump such as resistances/ voltages? Sometimes when it cranks, I believe it ignites for half a second and then dies. Then it cranks with no ignition, then it sounds like its dying, then it ignites every once in a while.
Similar to this: [URL] ..... but without the nastiness at 0:08 where they turn off the car mid crank.
So I got my 92 Celica GT 2.2 Motor Auto (unfortunately for now). Back off my wife's uncle and it wont crank or anything. I also noticed that now when you push the brake, it still wont let u shift it out of park. If you try to start the car it does nothing, however the brake light on the dash shows up. I am thinking it may be the starter as all the relays and fuses look ok. I am thinking it could be the ignition switch as it wont let me shift out of park without using the release button, but am not sure where I should start.

The dash display area has a laminate covering it and it is starting to release from the surface of the display. Dealer says that they have to take the entire dash out to look at it and fix it. I am somewhat apprehensive about them taking the dash out and putting it back for a cosmetic item.
I have a 2004 prius with about 350k miles on it, bought it about a year ago and we have had our first trouble with it (it's been great so far, and when you consider it's mileage, pretty impressive).
We were driving along and a constant alarm started (beeeeep!!!) and lights on the dash lit up. I assumed it was cranky because the rear hatch wasn't closed or something and kept driving (we didn't have far to go). It wasn't long before smoke with a distinctive burnt electronics smell started coming up from the dash at the front left lower corner of the windshield. Then the brakes started to feel very unresponsive and sluggish (no regenerative braking either). She still runs and drives. So here is where I am now:
The car screams constantly and the brake light, ABS light and the (!) light are all lit.
I've been poking about and figured out that my inverter coolant pump isn't working properly. At this point I am wondering if this is just pure coincidence though (i.e. perhaps its not been working for awhile). I will be replacing this soon.
I checked the error codes and they all seemed to be un-related and or old (catalytic converter not working properly, ran out of fuel, etc). I cleared them and no new ones are populating. (car has only been driven around the block 3 times though)
The 12 V battery seems to be working fine, and it's getting the proper charging voltage. (voltage tested through the console under various conditions)
I have reset the braking system (bridging the #4 and #13 pins thing) and this turned the buzzer and lights off for about 20 seconds. Still no proper brakes. And of course the noise and lights just come back. Still no error codes via my Bluetooth reader and smartphone.
I have my doubts that replacing the inverter pump will fix this brake issue. I am familiar with working on cars, but this is my first foray with 1) a modern car and 2) a Prius. (Previous cars are all mid 90s or older, so I'm a little bit overwhelmed here...)
My Prius has started stalling out. I had the codes read a couplt days ago..needs plugs or gas cap gaskets. I disconnected the ground cable to clear codes instead of going to dealer and being charged to clear check engine light. After doing this the car has stalled out twice. The first time I tried jumping it didn't work until I disconnected and reconnected the ground cable, it started after about 5 minutes of being hooked up to my other car.
Took it for a drive to charge it further after about 15 miles everything was working fine, the hybrid monitor was showing good charging. Then all of a sudden the triangle light comes on and all the other stuff, check engine etc. Takes a few more miles to stall out. I did the same thing with the battery as before leaving it disconnected for about 5 minutes. Reconnected and it starts up and ran fine to home. ?? Did trying to clear the codes the first time cause these problems???
I just bought a 2010 LX and tonight I discovered that I may be able to play a digit copy DVD. So, the kids jumped in the car and inserted one of their movies(not Blu Ray) and we can only hear it. All we see in the video box is a blue screen.
View 5 RepliesI have a 2008 Pontiac GT, regularly maintained and all runs fine. Just one problem that has popped up over the last few weeks since the warmer weather has arrived: On the computer readout in the dash, if the "Coolant" display shows a temperature (say, 83C or what have you), then the AC works. However, much of the time the Coolant reading shows "---" (3 blank dashes), and the AC does not work. It's still been quite cool around here (Toronto area) so I haven't needed the AC much but it's heating up and I'd sure love to take care of this if possible.
View 4 RepliesThis was happening on my 2008 a couple of months ago and also now on my 2013 I noticed sometimes when I get in the car I push the button once and as usual then I have to push the button the second time and it only goes in neutral and assign comes up and says shift to park position starting so I don't get it this only happens once in a while. Then a couple times later or a couple days later as usual I pushed the button one and everything works fine right into the drive what gives?

View 14 Repliesthis is the second time this has happened to me: I stopped at a beach access to relax & look at the ocean, turned car off but left key in as was staying in car. When I decided to leave car would not start, dash lights would come on but that was all. Hit power button again lights went off but could not get key out of ignition. After several tries I call AAA, they charged something under the hood & said I needed a new battery. The first time this happened was several months ago & I never replaced the battery. When I got home I did the self check of the voltage & it was 12.8 & car is starting fine. Is this some kind of a computer glitch?

View 2 RepliesMy ex-wife has a 2008 Prius. When trying to get heat, either using Auto A/C or manual, the display panel shows that only the floor vents are open. However, forced air is flowing from the upper vents on the dash. The air from these vents is not warmed. It seems to be unheated outside air. It's unclear whether this is a new problem, since the owner doesn't know if this behavior has been there since she bought the car. She does report that the car has always taken a long time to get comfortable in winter.
View 7 RepliesI have had my '08 Prius for 3 years and have little to no problems with it. This morning I jumped in to go to work and the entire dash lit up and then faded out and died. The only lights still on is the check engine light, Airbag light and the little green light on the Park button. The worst part is now I can not completely shut it down. I am wondering if it is just a dead battery or if this is something bigger. If it is a dead battery I am baffled at how it could be. I have AAA coming to jump it and I hope that is all it is. Sound familiar?
View 16 RepliesI got my first used oil analysis from Blackstone @ 48,000 km (roughly 30K miles). The oil has 8K km (or 5K miles). The dealer changed the oil so it's whatever they use.
The fuel comes back at 5.3%, whereas "normal" is < 2.0%.
Aside from that, other "unnormal" things include the Lead with a count of 9 (normal is 0), SUS viscosity is 50.9 (normal is 54-61), cSt viscosity of 7.54 (should be 8.5-10.8), and Flashpoint is 260 (should be >365).
While bucking a 30+ headwind on the highway @ 70mph, hit a pothole, got a check engine light and engine died. Traffic heavy and dangerous so I stayed on electric power longer than I should have to get off onto a service road. Determined my 12 volt battery terminals were very loose from vibration, I'm assuming. But now the car will not stay running when started. SOC shows 2.5%, main battery 0 volts.
Towed home, recharged main battery to 7.3vdc per module, yet car still shows same SOC and will not stay running. Currently, disconnected 12 volt battery overnight to see if things look better after system sits disconnected for several hours.
So computing avg fuel mileage. There are a lot of times display shows max of 99.9. Does the car use that number to compute av?. Or is that just the display's max and the car knows it is 155 or infinite mpg. (rolling downhill gen charging HV batt using no fuel actually more than infinite mileage)
