So I noticed that there is a type of whining sound coming from the ICE side whenever the temperature is below ~55F. This only happens from a cold start and only when I'm accelerating (pressing the gas pedal) and always go away after the engine warms up.
View 7 RepliesUpon starting, my 2002 (160,000) has a rattling sound coming from the passenger-engine side. I just started noticing it and it seems to happen in the morning on its first start up. It doesn't seem to be effecting driving, but not sure if it was something to be concerned about.
View 2 RepliesI have a whining sound coming from somewhere on the left side of my Accent HB SE 2013. 6 months old...it isnt audio related, and is intermittent - sometimes I can hear it, sometimes I cant. It can only be heard above say 40km/hr... and gets higher pitched with speed... lower and whirs out to silence when coming to a stop.
It sounds almost clutch related, but my guess is fuel pump related. A visual inspection shows the belts are fine.... I tried to see if it was hand-brake related by pumping a few times before pulling off... no dice. Now I'm trying to keep fuel above half to see if that has an effect on cooling the pump....
In cold weather, I hear a periodic whining sound from inside the car, any speed, disappearing after about 5-10 minutes when the car is completely warm. It seems to come from the driver's side dash or foot well. It is getting worse with time. Car is very new, only 2500 miles with no other problems. It is not the heater. It is not from the engine bay...I think. Very weird. Only happens when the weather is cold and disappears when the car is warm.

View 12 RepliesToday, I experienced the coldest temperatures yet on my drive to work. At one point, I saw a '24F' shown as the outside temperature (although not unusual for April in Minnesota):
Expected: My gas mileage was down a bit. I was impressed it wasn't as bad as I would have expected from our 2005 Prius, though.
I should have expected: On the last 1/2 mile or so, when driving slow on the little bit of EV left while in the forced HV mode, I accidentally accelerated too much and forced on the ICE again (it had been previously on earlier in my 22 mile commute). This time, however, it was different because it didn't shut off immediately. I think the ICE had to do a second warm up. I'll have to watch that more closely next time (darn that cold weather)!
I have been having problems with a loud whining noise when I steer in cold weather (approx 35 degrees F) and only after the car has warmed up. Now, before everyone tells me about the Honda Service bulletin addressing this problem, I will tell you I had the Power Steering reservoir replaced at 65K miles, per the service bulletin. However, the problem came BACK after another 35K on the van. The dealership then replaced the inlet pipe O-ring on the power steering pump which ended up NOT fixing the problem. So I still have a fairly new power steering reservoir, a new O-ring AND the loud whine. Am I doomed to replace this every 35K miles or is there some other problem that is buried deeper than the PS reservoir? (And the loud whine you hear really is coming from the van....but soon I might be joining it.)

View 3 RepliesWell, as the cold weather has approached, a minor issue has surfaced.
It appears my driver-side mirror heater is not working. Both mirrors still move as they should, and the rear defroster and passenger side mirror both heat as the should with the defrost button, but the driver side does not, as it is cold to the touch and naturally did not melt the frost yesterday.
I looked at the fuses hoping it would be something as simple as that, but it does not appear there are separate fuses for each mirror; the naming is a bit cryptic, but it looks like there may be one for both mirrors, which logically would not explain the situation.
Seems to me the heater itself is defective, and I am not exactly looking forward to opening up the mirror and/or spending money to fix this...
The Prius is a 2006, and I am up to 256K KM (~160K miles) to date.
I have a 2008 Prius with 111,000 miles on it and lately, I hear a loud chirping, whining sound that is louder under acceleration and seems to vary only according to acceleration or deceleration. Acceleration makes a louder sound. The noise does not occur when vehicle is cold and first driven. It's only after it's driven for awhile and things are warmed up but then again, it doesn't always do it even though it's warmed up. Not sure I could reproduce the sound if I brought it to a dealer for service. When the noise does start up, it's very apparent and loud and then, after awhile, it goes away temporarily only to start up again.

The salesman said it was "sonar," which was added to the latest models so that pedestrians, particularly those who are hard of hearing will know you are coming.
View 16 RepliesReplaced the main battery replaced 12V battery. Drives great except for the whining on the driver side and the occasional shutter at take off and while driving. Triangle is on and stays on engine light and now break light. Topped the break flood off. Cleared codes and the brake light came back on. Drove it home from Atlanta drove just fine. Lights just freaked me out though.

When it is cold (below 30 degrees) and above about 30mph, there is a loud high pitched squeal (rather like the pitch of a squealing hearing aide)that seems to come form the front drivers side. The colder it is, the louder it is.
When I am able to take it in it is too warm to hear it. What might be causing the noise and will they be able to figure it out if it isn't making the sound?
Is it possible to temporarily seal and brace up a front windshield that has a crack in it from side to side, due to cold weather, I'm told? And would replacing it with a used one, on a 2003 Dodge Intrepid be something a Saturday Mechanic with a woodstove in his garage be able to tackle?
View 5 RepliesI have a 2011 Sonata with 40k miles and am hearing what sounds like a dragging ... medal touching medal .... brakes dragging sound coming from the passenger side mainly when the car is cold. Could this be a possible wheel bearing going out???
the car is lowered about an 1.5 inches and and sit on a staggered wheel set. 18x8.5 up front and 18x9.5 in the rear. Just want to know if I should be worried.
I have an 89 Volvo 244 DL series. I have had a complete tune-up, and oil change just recently. Battery works great, plenty of voltage, even had the fuel injection cleaned out.
Problem is the car starts right up when it is cold, however, after driving it and let it set for an hour the car starts up slower and immediately it stalls out. I do it again and the same thing happens and then I leave my foot on the pedal to keep it running at a higher idle for a bit and then place into a gear & it goes without any hesitation. If by chance I do not leave foot on pedal and put it in whatever gear it immediately stalls out. I have driven Volvo's for years, from the 70's to what I have currently. I never had encounter anything like this and have dealt with many other issues and this one has me baffled.
Its not super cold but in Tampa ever since I installed my headers and its 60 or below i've gotten the VSC and ABS lights on in the dash after driving a little bit. Typically this is a cold morning type thing.
I reset the lights and it went away for a few days (it also got 30 degrees warmer) once it got down to 55 the lights came back on. Parked the car went in to work and when I drove home the lights were off (without re-setting the lights).
I know the codes can mean different things. The car is driving the same as always too- I have PPE headers, Ingen Intake, and a muffler delete.
When I turn off the car I can smell some paraffin-like fume and sometimes also even see a white-blue smoke coming from under the engine. This only happens now when the outer temperatures have fallen here to Zero Celsius. I didn't see anything similar earlier when it was warmer!
I also can hear some weird buzzing sound for about 2 minutes coming from the areas of the left and right front wheels. I've put on winter tires yesterday and found nothing wrong there in wheels area. I am thinking about a fuel pump/pipe or perhaps something with AC/heating, or oil burning... Or is that OK?
Or is this something releated to the diesel particulate filter? I was driving just some short city distances last days....
Where exactly is located the particulate filter?
Ok, so I started the car this morning and there was a whining sound that sounds like winding of gears, It changed in pitch along with RPMs and when the car was in neutral (it's a stick) and the clutch not engaged, it was still there with pitch appropriate for idle RMPs. Later, when the car warmed up, the whine disappeared.
View 13 RepliesThis might just be car engine in general regardless of make or model, but upon a cold start, my GTI engine whines or buzzes for approximately 1 second before it stops. I had a 2009 Toyota Corolla that also did this, but I had it fixed with a TSB due to the oil not reaching the VVT-I gears or something in time. It's not the same noise in my GTI, but I was wondering about same sound almost every time upon a cold start?
View 13 RepliesWhen my truck sits all day and its cold out, my truck in 2WD will make a whining sound going down the road, sometimes its a grinding sound almost. Appears to be coming from the passenger side of the truck towards the front. Engaging 4x4 gets rid of the noise, and the noise will usually disappear after the truck has been running and warmed up. I've changed my ball joints recently and everything looked good and yes it had done it a time or two before hand. What causes this, and how do I fix it?
