My 2008 Prius with 105k miles recently started having a strange clunking noise when turning at low speed. Dealership diagnosed it as the steering shaft and yoke to replace.
View 7 RepliesI have a '16 F250 4wd with the 6.7 and approx 3k miles. There has been a strange sound coming from the front end when turning left from a stoplight. It sounds like something slides or shifts and it only happens once in a while. The noise isn't loud but you can feel it.
View 2 RepliesOur 2012 Prius with now 17,000 miles in 8 months has developed a clunking noise when turning the steering wheel, especially far to the right at low speeds.
The first time the dealer identified it as a failed intermediate shaft and replaced it under warranty. Shortly after we told them it was starting to make the noise again, but they claimed they couldn't replicate the sound and anything they heard was normal 'linkage' (whatever that is). Shortly thereafter the clunking progressed so we took it in for now the third time, and they confirmed the problem, spoke with Toyota who said we must have had a bad part, and replaced it again.
Ever since I had my Prius in the dealership for the most recent brake recall I noticed a noise (which is hard to describe, something like a muffled clicking) when turning and braking at low speed. If I let my foot off the brake the noise seems to go away. This seems to be happening on both left and right turns.
View 19 RepliesI recently bought an'08 Base model. It is making a creaking noise in the front end on the left side either behind the wheel or under the motor. It only does it when taking off from a stop and/or turning mainly to the right during slow speed, seems to be when the body weight is shifting. To me it sounds as though something needs greased or maybe a strut.
View 2 RepliesSo with the temps on the east coast being sub 17 degrees, I noticed my car acting up on cold start and all the way until the car is at operating temp.
1 -- Going from P to Reverse is rough! I allow the car to "break free" sort of speak, before I actually give it gas in reverse and once I give it gas the car bucks violently a couple times and seems to not want to actually reverse... Issue is gone after driving the car and letting it warm up.
2 -- Again right after cold start and until operating temp - Shifting in either D mode or Paddle mode going from 1st to 2nd creates a strange "grinding" noise (I will try to get a video clip of it). The sound is very similar to that of a MK 4 starter beginning to go bad, but not as loud. It only ever happened going into 2nd gear from 1st gear. Once the car was up to operating temp and driven around the sound did not occur. Even after starting the car up again after letting it sit for an hour or two it was okay.
Both things occur on cold start up with the car sitting for roughly 8-10 hours.
I have a 2001 Honda civic. Great car, so far. I need to replace the catalytic converter, however I just passed smog shortly prior to the cc going out so I've been putting it off (bad, I know).
When I drive in the lower gears, 1st and 2nd, the car makes a much louder than normal ggggrrrrrrr sound. Don't know quite how to describe it. Especially when turning corners.
Do I need a new transmission? Does my needing to replace the catalytic converter have anything to do with this?
I have a 2000 vw 2.8 v6.
I got it back in February and it ran great up until now. A couple months ago while driving home my cel started flashing and right when the light came on I could immediately feel an immense loss in power and when I got to a red light it would shake like mofo. Gettin up to speed was suddenly a huge problem and the car would make a strange noise and I could smell a strong odor of gas and slight oil. I have a valve cover gasket leak that I paid 300 bucks to replace but after a week I realized it's still leaking oil so that 300 bucks just went out the window. The sluggish performance and cel went away the next time I drove the car and it ran awesome for over a month till one day while I was on my way home from grabbing some lunch it all of a sudden started happening again. Sluggish performance, smell of gas and slight oil, wouldn't get up to speed.
I brought it to my local vw dealership to have it looked at yesterday figuring that they'd be able to tell me exactly what was going wrong. I got a call early this morning saying that the oil leak in my valve covers are causing my coil pack to short out and foul my plugs and wires and then told me it was going to cost 1,700 bucks with all the parts and labor. I'm not very mechanically inclined when it comes to vehicles so it's not like I can do the work myself but my main question is, how can the oil cause the coil pack to short out seeing that oil is not conductive and some cars actually use oil to cool the packs down. Is that a legitimate diagnosis or is the dealership mechanic Actually right or is he just getting creative trying to squeeze some money out of me.
My 1993 5.0 liter bronco is making a strange ticking noise. when it's idling, and it ticks, the idle drops. then it will tick again and the idle will raise up. usually between the 600 to 1000 rpm range. it just started doing this and never did before.
View 8 RepliesI have noticed that if I push gas pedal while turning the corner, especially if starting to go uphill, there is significant vibration felt in the gas pedal. It happens every time, as I use the same road each day, for 6 months now. I recently had a rental prius for a weeks, and had the same experience, although not as pronounced as my car.

I had a mishap years back with front end hub bearings so I replaced with New Timken Bearings. Well that wasn't it but at least I know where I
stand with those. It starts making a noise when slowing down about 3-5 seconds before coming to a stop. I thought maybe the carrier bearing in
driveshaft?
Pinion bearing in rear diff? I need to service the parking brakes on rear so I may pull it down and go through it.
So I got a steering problem and it's got me going crazy. I have a 06 g35 sedan lowered about an 1.5 inches. It's been about 5 months since I lowered it, lately I've been herring clunking noise in front suspension, not all the time but only sometimes when I turn. The other day my steering got really stiff and when I turn the steering won't return to the center. My Power steering isn't making any noise and I'm good on fluid. A lot of people say my ball joints but don't they usually make a lot of noise when they go bad ?
View 18 RepliesWhen I drive over a bump or the car goes over a dip at speed, there is clunking sound from the front end. It seems to be much more noticeable in this cold weather, hence my current concern. I have not looked into it at all. I live on a bumpy dirt road, so the front end gets a workout.
The car has 39,800 miles. So the 40k is almost here, and the 4 years is almost here as well so I cannot just not drive the car for a while.
But if I can get a common problem fixed under warranty, I will take the time tomorrow to deal with this. The other weird thing in this cold snap is that the VW never seems to get to 190 deg, like it usually does (middle of temp gauge), it will be a few notches below. Normal situation? It will go back to 190 if I turn off the heat and drive a bit harder, but with the heat blasting (baby in car) and very mellow driving, it doesn't quite make it...
We have a 1995 Chrysler Concorde. It drives fine, but recently I have been hearing a clunking noise (two or three clunks) somewhere in the rear of the car AFTER I turn the car off. It does not clunk while driving or braking or slowing down: only right after the ignition is turned off.

View 1 RepliesI've owned my 14.5 camry se 4 cyl since may and a few weeks into owning it i noticed a pop/clunk coming from the front passenger side while reversing and turning the wheel. So, finally got some free time to take it into the dealer today and dropped it off. Also, when letting off the brakes you can hear like a creaking noise, almost like the brakes are metal to metal but it only happens LETTING OFF the brakes?
My service advisor says supposedly the "creaking" noise when letting off the brakes is normal. I told him i really don't believe that lol and asked to test drive another new camry on the lot which is being arranged for tomorrow. In the meantime he says they're gonna look at it either way.
My 04 Dakota 4x4 makes a clunking noise when
1) in 4-wheel drive going forward while turning either direction (but not while going straight) and
2) in 4-wheel drive in reverse (straight or turning). It does not do it in 2-wheel drive under any circumstances.
I suspect the front drive shaft U-joints since it only happens in 4-wheel drive. Rear drive shaft U-joints or front CV joints would be a possibility but I would think they would cause a noise in both 2 and 4-wheel drive and in either direction equally.
I have a 2004 2WD supercab. And am hearing a 'clunking' sound when I turn almost full-lock. Below is a summary of what I have experienced so far:
- My truck used to be lowered 2" (below stock) at the front since new. Last month I lifted it (front and rear) and it now sits 2" above stock on new rancho shocks.
- I installed a camber kit and had the front aligned (toe and camber) after the above suspension work.
- The truck drove beautifully for two weeks until one day a 'clunking' sound was heard from the front-left every time I turned left. The alignment also changed as I had to now hold the steering very slightly to the left to drive straight.
- The alignment shop re-did the toe tracking (the camber did not change) and the truck drove great for about a day. Now I can hear the same clunking sound when I turn right and the tracking is again screwed up meaning I need to hold the steering very slightly to the right to drive straight.
What parts are playing up and what may need replacing?
1990 Cherokee 4.0 ... Well I've got a minor clunking somewhere under there that seems to vary with speed. now I have to figure out what it is. my working theories are wheel bearing, or one of the three hundred odd universals under there. perhaps a brake shoe or the transfer case. This is my first 4wd, so I don't know about transfer cases.... there is also some kind of weird double universal under there, I can t remember the name off the top of my head.

View 3 RepliesHave a 2010 Corolla, 42k miles, from a dead stop, turn left under power with wheel about 90% of one full turn, get a clunking popping clicking noise from the front end -- I cannot tell if from the left or right side -- I've been in the back seat too, and cannot determine if the noise is coming from the left or right side up front. I've had the car since 34k miles, has been making this sound ever since, not sure if its gotten worse, if it has, maybe just a little.
No noise if turning while NOT under power (coasting). No noise if turning to the right. No noise while driving in a straight line or veering left at a higher speed. Also, I tried to recreate this noise from a dead stop, turning going in reverse, both left and right, and no noise ever.
If in a parking lot, from a dead start, turn wheel left almost one full turn, accelerating slowly I can get the car to make this sound continuously (until I start going too fast beyond my comfort zone).
Have looked under car jacked up several times, nothing obvious. CV axles have minimal play and the boots are in great shape. Suspension parts appear ok.
My gut tells me could be a CV axle, but not certain, and I don't know which side..... something else that could cause this ?
