Prius (Gen 2) :: Squishy Noise From The Rear End
Oct 28, 2010
I just bought a new set of the Hankook 727 195/60/R15 tires from TireRack installed yesterday (with an alignment as well).
I immediately noticed that when I make turns now, I get this "squishy" feeling from the rear end, like the car is floating its way through the turn. For a good half-second, the rear end just keeps moving to the side. Its very disconcerting. Its the same feeling I had several months ago when I got a nail in one of the Conti's before the tire went completely flat.

Trying to figure out the best option to remedy some braking issues. One is the squishy pedal feel. It does not happen all the time, but sometimes I will notice that the pedal is "sagging" for lack of a better term, and when I let up on the pedal and press again, the point of action/effect seems to be much higher.
As for the pads, I'm also curious if new ones will work with the grab I've been feeling after leaving the car outside for a few days. I have completely stopped using my e-brake because if it rains or is wet to begin with, the pads seem to stick (I believe) to the rotors and I have to practically to a low rpm launch to get them unstuck. Then I hear a sort of bumpy feel like there is pad material stuck to the rotors. It usually fades after some highway driving and decent braking. I could have sworn it happened the other day with NO e-brake engaged though, so I really don't know what is going on.

I love this car, but due to it's relative rarity, there don't seem to be too many ways to firm up the ride with some lowering. Eibach does not have a "package" for this model. I was considering getting 1BE springs with Koni FSD's.

When car is standing on d, I feel like I need to press brake pad with good amount of foot force to keep it parked. If I loose tension a bit then it feels like car will go forward.
When lexus inspected a month ago they said pad was little slim but brake actuator was fine. But brake does feel squishy when parked.

I've finally logged about 3000 miles into my 2014 Sonata. In the last few weeks of driving, I've noticed during stop and go traffic, that initial stepping on brake pedal decompresses kinda weird. It's almost like its too squishy on the initial few mm's of stepping on it. It seems to go away after pumping the brakes after i turn off the car. But it comes back randomly, sometimes on short drives, mostly noticeable in traffic where you brake more than usual.
I brought it to a hyundai dealership to get looked at initially but the service manager played with it and didn't notice anything out of ordinary so he did not request it to be serviced. But since it came back and starting to annoy me more and more.. i need to drop it off and have it looked at. I haven't even gotten my first oil change either.

My daughter has a 2007 Ford Fusion with brake issues. Brakes are squishy after the car is "jarred" (i.e. hits a bump or pothole). The brakes go almost all the way to the floor and return to normal after a driving for a while. All the work described below has been performed by Ford dealers (at great expense): Master Cylinder replaced, all brake pads replaced. Brakes have been bled numerous times. When we bring it in they bleed it and say it's fine, next "bump" and the problem comes back. We're really at our wits end, the car is, at many times, scary to drive.

Just got a new to me 02 Limited v8 - 128k on the clock
Noticed today while at a stop light that when I depress the brake pedal (after being stopped) it makes a squishy sound - the pedal feels different, but I don't know if spongy/squishy is the right way to describe it, it just sounds like you stepped on a waterlogged sponge.
Now the brakes definitely don't feel as good as my XLT brakes (recently replaced it due to rod knock - 02 XLT v6). It still stops but seems like it requires more effort and almost fades a little. I initially chalked up the difference in performance to me putting new rotors/pads on the XLT - Thermo-quiet semi's with Raybestos rotors.
However it appears after some brief reading this could be the master cylinder on its way out....is that accurate? I planned on taking my pads/rotors off the XLT before I ship it to the junkyard (less than 3k on that setup), but if its the master cylinder, I'd like to do that while I'm doing all my other tune up stuff this weekend
I'm gonna put it on the lift this weekend and see if there's any brake fluid stains to see if air is getting into the system, but looking at the reservoir over the past week I haven't noticed really any decline in fluid level.

I recently picked up a cpo rx 350 and my steering wheel makes a squishy rubber-rubber friction kinda noise when I turn - especially when I am reversing. Is it common and does it go away?

Recently purchased 2006 F-550. Noticed the brakes seemed a bit squishy and weren't stopping the truck as well as I thought they might. Looked under the car and saw this at the right rear tire. Give it to me straight, doc.

I have a brand new 2013 Prius III with a little over a hundred miles on it now. I started to notice that every time I sit or standup to get out I hear a noise from the rear of the car. When I drive it normally, I don't really hear any trouble with the suspension or brakes. This sound happens before I even power up the car.

We have around 18000 miles on our car and we have been getting a noise from the right rear wheel. It only happens first thing in the morning and last for a minute or so. Sounds like the bearing but every time we take it to the dealership, they haven't been able to diagnose it.

When I'm driving and I open just the rear windows - I get a buffeting, choppy, shaking noise - kinda like the whop, whop of a copter blade. The first time it happened I thought I had a flat tire. Is it the cover for the cargo area?

I have a 2007 with 87000 miles on it. Over the past two months, it's developed a clicking noise from the rear of the car. At first I thought it was a loose hatch, but it seems to be shutting snugly. It only happens on slight bumps and not on actual potholes. It sounds exactly like the sway bar links on my old volvo would sound when they were going (which was often), but there are no sway bars on the prius. A suspension noise doesn't surprise me after the winter. The other odd thing is that it occasionally disappears completely for a day or two.

Tried searching, but all I found were links to fan noise in rear seat area. Yesterday my wife was in the garage and heard a fan-like noise in the right rear wheel well. The car had been parked for a couple of hours after a trip to the doctor's office. I could faintly hear it inside the cargo area when the 12v battery is located, but it was more pronounced outside. I got the key, started the car and the noise stopped and hasn't returned. I have no problem taking it in to have it checked, but I thought I'd check here before I did that in case it's normal. It's intermittent, so I don't know how easy it will be to diagnose.

I bought a 2002, being a total new by I thought that faint humming noise was the electric motors doing , it's thing. Noise was faint when only me in the car or going slowly. Well as soon as I had someone sitting in the rear it was a loud humming droning noise that seemed to get quieter when making right turns like heavy off ramps at speed.
Finally jacked the car up and checked for wheel bearing noise. Fronts were too hard to check as there was resistance while turning wheel by hand, but the rear passenger seemed rough but no noise or looseness while turning by hand compared to the driver rear side.

Someone hit my Prius 2015 while it was parked. Since being hit, I can hear an oscillating noise that gets fairly pronounced at 70+ mph. This noise is like: similar to a gradually increasing engine noise, as if there is a truck next to me that's trying to gradually out pace me or oscillating road noise. It's mild at 50 mph, but gets pretty pronounced at 70+ mph.

I'm getting a rattle in the hatch area -- making a sound as if the hatch is moving independent of the body.
Sound like the hatch is loose -- but it's not. If I grab hold of the wing and try and move the hatch ---- it's tight and I get no sound.

I brought my prius v back to the dealer for the fourth time because of the groaning noise from the rear brakes. I was told that Toyota is aware of the problem and they are designing a new rear brake. They expect it to be ready for installation after January 1st, 2013. Let's hope it isn't too far after the first of the year.
