Prius (Gen 2) :: Slight Noise Like Scraping When Turning Right
Mar 20, 2012
I have been noticing a slight noise when turning left and I cannot recall if this is normal or not. Typically I always play music when driving. It's very faint and sounds like scraping. Seems to come and go depending on the temp....that is when warmer I do not hear it. I got less than 1000 miles left on the warranty and would like to get opinions if it necessary to take into the shop. Btw, the shop wants $125 to walk in the door...hence the hesitation.
Prius 2006 99200 miles. Never had an issue.

There is a slight noise when turning left sometimes, its not to major, but out of curiosity I went to the mechanic and was they told me this needs replacing:
R& R AXLE SHAFT & CV JOINT - $195.00
R&R STABILIZER LINK BUSHING - $59.50
That was the labor, they did not have the part piece prices since they have to order them.

This is finally getting too annoying to ignore. The noise sounds like i'm dragging a piece of metal along the ground whenever i turn right. the sharper the turn, the louder the sound.

I have been getting this scraping noise coming from my front passenger side tire. At first it would only happen during the winter time and has gotten progressively worse. Now it will do it during left turns and at very low speeds when I'm turning the wheel also.... I checked to see if the tire was getting hot, and if there was anything hanging underneath, and found nothing.

Scraping noise in front end when turning left. Have changed brake pads, calipers, and rotors on both front wheels. There was no scraping noise before changing.

I have a 2000 Toyota Solara with 145,000 miles. When I make a right turn, there is a scraping sound like metal against metal. Its not loud or shrieking. Its hard to hear over talk radio. But in the garage I can hear it, and its been getting louder. I haven't changed or replaced the tires in awhile or had any other work done to the right tire since long before the noise started. Is this something serious that requires immediate attention or is it some loose piece of plastic?

1999 CR-V with 70k miles. Just noticed a slight constant scraping sound when car is in motion. I had a friend drive the car in a tight circle around me while I stood in a parking lot and was able to isolate the sound to the front right wheel. Sounds like a caliper dragging on the brake disk. Brake pads have plenty of meat left on them. So far, these are the possible causes I can think of:
caliper piston sticking in bore
caliper not sliding freely on caliper pins
brake hose restriction not allowing piston to retract
I had never heard of a brake hose restriction not allowing a piston to retract, but I just read an online forum comment where someone was having a similar problem, and someone else said it was possible for an old brake hose to look fine on the outside but be swelled on the inside, thus restricting fluid flow. And can something like a stuck piston be remedied with grease, or does the whole caliper have to be replaced?

I noticed coming home from work that my 2010 prius is making a scraping noise as I drive. I don't have far to drive and i drove slow but I did notice it. I see the rim of the wheel is scraped and the tire is too like it got hit somehow.
I can't seem to figure out what is causing it and i'm afraid to drive it anywhere because the nearest toyota dealership is about 20 miles away via highway.
Its like part of something is scraping as the wheel goes around. its not a constant scraping. That and I notice the steering wheel is pulling to the right.

2007 Prius w/ ~90,000 miles. So my wife was driving home and reports she hears a thunk of some sort, and then a scraping noise coming from the front of the car. She drives it home and I take a quick peek. Nothing dragging underneath, sounds like it's coming from the tires, so probably brake-related. But here are some additional clues: when I reversed down the (very short) driveway (at very low speed, <5mph), I heard the scraping. I then put it in D to go forward, again at low speed, and heard the scraping and then something went clank, like something was shifting in the other direction. Whenever I change direction, the clank sound and more scraping. Also: when the car is off and I'm gently rocking it back and forth, I hear squeaking, like springs of a bed.

I'm having a very slight noise whenever I turn the wheel at a certain angle. If I turn more, it goes away.
What could be causing this? Car has 60k miles and on stock suspension.

I've recently noticed that on my 2005 Gen 2, after starting the car, the first few miles I drive produce a gentle metallic rhythmic scraping sound coming from the right rear wheel.
It's only audible when driving at low speeds (<30 mph), and seems to disappear after the car has been driven for a few miles. But when I start the car fresh the next day, it has reappeared.
The rate of the scraping noise varies directly with the speed I'm driving. I think it only happens when I'm coasting (in Drive), and possibly also when I'm braking.
My guess is something is slightly misaligned or rusty - a disc brake? And the noise "disappears" when the metal gets warmed up?

My 2012 Plug-in spontaneously started making a metal scraping/rattling noise in the middle of a low-speed drive around the neighborhood yesterday. Seems to be coming from the left front wheel area. I've checked thoroughly under the car and in the front wheel wells for anything that could be dragging/rubbing, and I can't find a culprit there.
It occurs while coasting in EV mode, so not ICE/exhaust related. The car doesn't pull to one side or the other. Only 9K miles, so I wouldn't suspect a hub bearing or any other significant wear to be causing this.
Possible clue or red herring: the dealer replaced the the left front tire and did an alignment two days ago, and the noise occurred within 15 miles of driving after that service.

Our Prius is only a year old with less than 9,000 miles. Everything has been fine with it and then yesterday I took it out of the garage and started to drive and there was the most horrendous grinding/squealing/scraping noise as I started moving from the front passenger side (UK passenger, so left looking out).
I stopped the car and had a look, as at first I thought I was dragging something, but nothing to be seen. Checked the parking brake was definitely not engaged. I then thought perhaps something is caught in the brake pads and it will go in a bit, however even hard braking didn't seem to change the noise at all.
Carried on (I was going about 7 miles), and as I drove it would gradually get quieter, and then get louder again, with the occasional "clang" sound almost like a spring under tension suddenly moving.
Towards the end of the journey it had started to go quieter again, but with the window down you could still hear constant squeal/grind.
Parked the car, was away for an hour, came back and set off home and the noise was totally gone. Entirely silent all the way back home! Now I don't know what to do - whether it will come back, or whether I should take it in to garage for them to look (even though it's now not making any noise).

This is a 2001 Prius - car runs great and the AC is fine. However, driving down the road, when the AC is turned on there is a noticeable scraping/ticking noise - sounds like it coming from under the hood.
With the car parked, and the ignition ON, but without the gas engine running, there is no scraping noise.

I have a '01 Elantra with 145,000 miles on it. Recently I've noticed a slight scraping noise coming from the right front wheel whenever I turn the steering wheel to the left. The sharper I turn, the more pronounced the noise is. However,it is not a loud noise; I can only hear it when I have the windows down. Braking has no effect on the sound whatsoever. I'm thinking it could be a wheel bearing that's just beginning to go bad? Could it be a CV joint? Does this sound like something I should get fixed right away, or could I wait and see if it gets worse?

70's Ford 4x4 truck. I'm getting a very noticeable --- but intermittent, doesn't happen every time -- metallic scraping sound when turning right at slow speeds. Coming from the rear of the vehicle. Like in neighborhood driving. No unusual sounds when going straight. For the past week the problem seems to have gone away, so I'm playing this one by ear. Hopefully whatever it was has gone away. But I'm ever the worrier.
when it happens, it sounds like if I dragged a big sheet of metal on the road behind the truck. I'm sort of suspicious this sound is from the rear limited-slip differential. Could it be the diff clutches are corroded? Coming loose from their moorings? A differential bearing on the fritz?

my '06 Honda CRV makes a short scraping sound when turning. But more interestingly, it only makes this sound when the car has just been started. If I've been driving, the sound will not occur. The sound itself is a short scrape which seems to originate in the rear passenger side of the vehicle. I've researched this problem a bit, but everything I've turned up is related to the AWD model, while my CRV is 2WD. Just had the brakes serviced and checked, so that's out as well.

I have a 2011 F250 4x4 with 8000 miles. I put a 3.5" ReadyLift on it at 3500miles and Rancho dual stabilizers at 5000miles. This past week I've started to noticed my truck's steering making slight popping noises when turning the steering wheel. I crawled under the truck today and I can't pin point the orgin of the noise. It seems it is coming from higher up in the steering system possibly. It doesn't seem to be from the wheels or tie rod.

I noticed that the driver side front wheel makes a metallic scraping noise while the car is turning right. It sounds like something scraping the rotor or shield behind the rotor ( a rotational/moving kind of scraping noise)
This only happens on a relatively sharp turn (wheel is turned 70~80% to the right). I don't suspect the power steering as there is no noise if the car is not moving even when wheel is turned to extremes. The scraping noise happens at any speed, as long as the car is moving. does not happen when car is turning left.
Note that I am 90% certain it is from the front... my ears may be playing a trick on me (kind of hard to listen precisely while driving). Where to start looking?

I have a 2010 with about 166k miles. I am getting a slight hesitation at slight acceleration or constant speed. It does not matter if it's on highway or freeway speeds. Now I am not sure if this in junction with me changing the PCV valve, cleaning the EGR pipe, or cleaning the TB for carbon recently. It started happening a week after it though.

Starts getting loud above 35mph, local tire shop recommends replacing the struts- says they are causing bumps in the tire because the tire is bouncing along as I drive. I did feel bumps going across the tire when I passed my hand across it.
