I've been traveling on the highway a lot lately for work and it seems like whenever I put my 2006 Prius on cruise speed at around 72-76 MPH, engine noise is through the roof. Now I understand that Prius has a small engine compared to my stronger Camry, but I was wondering to know about highway speed and RPM's for 2nd Gen Prius?
View 4 RepliesRecently I have been doing a lot of highway driving with my 2007 Prius. There is noticeably an excessive amount of wind noise at highway speed due to the gap between the front and back door.
After applying a piece of weather stripping from the hardware store, about $5 the wind noise is greatly reduced.

View 6 RepliesI collected a 6 month old demonstrator Phaeton on Friday to replace my previous 3 year old.
It's interesting all the little changes in the upgrade model, and it has (to me) a different feel. Quite a bit of this may be due to the 19" wheels which do contribute quite a but more road noise at higher (motorway) speeds.
My real query is the sunroof on this car. I hear significant wind noise from the closed roof at higher speeds (an indicated 80 to 90 mph). On inspection I suspect that the front lip of the sunroof is a few mm proud of the roof.
My Prius just stalled out on highway from cruise control @ 65 mph, so I coasted luckily off an exit, and before coming to complete stop the whole dash went black with exception of power steering failure warning light. I had it towed, at my cost of $95, to dealer for troubleshooting. They found that the fuel sensing system/indicator had worn, and cost for repair is $422+, as not under any warranty or recall. Fuel sense indicator worn out @ 105,145 miles...

On highway, mostly notice with cruise on, what seems like engine shake starts. Almost like engine is moving around a bit. There is a noticeable "jump" sometimes, when going up or down hill and the cruise wants to adjust speed.
This morning (roughly freezing temperature - nothing out of the ordinary after the brutal winter we just had) got onto the highway to head to work and set the cruise control (as normal) at approx 110km/h (65mph) and after several seconds heard a distinct, quite unpleasant grinding noise. It was loud enough to be heard over the heater and radio. Turned the heater and radio off to listen closer and didn't like the sound of it - sounded like metal on metal.
There was no different feel in the floor, pedals or steering wheel. As soon as I turned cruise control off, the noise disappeared! Turned cruise control back on, and the noise returned approx 5 seconds later. If I continued driving along normally and sustained a certain speed, the noise would appear after 5 seconds again and only go away once I lifted off the gas or coasted down a hill... Very bizarre. Once I got to work and poked my head underneath didn't immediately notice anything out of the ordinary - no funny smells or anything...
Background info: 2011 FX4 ecoboost, crew cab. Stock, no modifications. Approx 134,000km (~80,000 miles)...

When I'm cruising down the highway it's most noticeable. 5th gear anywhere from 65mph+ I'll let off the gas and it'll make a "errrRRRt" until I press the gas again. I've recently installed new :
- Front u joints, ball joints, hub assemblies, rotors, calipers, pads
- Rear drive shaft u joints
- Front diff fluid
- Trans fluid
- Tcase fluid
- 4" zone lift kit
All of these things did nothing to effect the noise. it seems to be coming from between the clutch and rear shaft (either clutch, trans, tcase). I don't think it is a motor noise or suspension noise.
We were driving on mt highway and ran over rock. Had the undercarriage checked immediately and mechanic spotted the mark inches from transmission but said all was fine. Last evening the engine began to run very rough and loud particularly when not accelerating; true even when idling/parked. Also noticing a small rattle that is infrequent and disassociated with any consistent pattern. We are in Taos Ski valley at about 8k elevation. Still have two weeks of vacation driving ahead of us.

View 16 Replies I travel highway daily at 70+mph and it's pretty annoying, nothing the radio won't fix but sometimes I like to have a conversation with passengers and find myself talking over it.
I have a 2DR Base, MFD 04/12.
I've tried the vinyl tubing thing and that did nothing. Had the dealer look at it when it was in for the service and they said it was "within spec", I stopped up there today and tried looking up any TSB's with the service advisor and most of the ones we found were for the GTI. My issue starts about 60-70 mph and gets worse the faster you go. The noise sounds like it's coming from the top of the window - almost like the window is cracked about 1/8".
I'm loving this 'new' 2004 prius with 177k miles on it that i just bought. In New England winters I'm still getting 40-45 mpg and I'm not even trying to get great MPG's.
1.) Wind noise : My biggest disappointment is excessive wind noise over 55 mph. I 'm using this car as a taxi and its so loud inside I'm a little embarrassed with customers in the car. It sounds to me that its coming from the passenger window or passenger side near the windshield, but I can not identify its location at all. I've always been the one driving when looking for it though.
I called a dealer that sells lots of gen II used prius's and he says its fairly common to replace the window seals? The car has a clean car fax.
2.) Mild clunk when the engine kicks on. Not all the time, but sometimes : Other thing is, I can sometimes feel and hear a mild clunk when the engine kicks on. I also feel a little bit if vibration when the engine is on and i'm idling (it was 16 degrees last night so the engine stays on for heat). The oil level is good. I'm due for change in the next 500 miles.
Is this anything I should be concerned about? I'm sure I'm just overly sensitive.

Just happened last night, i was driving on the highway when i noticed my temp needle was reading about a 1/4 of an inch higher than normal. That's never happened before. It's always been rock steady right in the middle. I was doing about 80 miles an hour. i slowed down to about 65 and the needle went back to the middle. I sped up to 70 and the needle went back up again. So i slowed down again and it went back down.
Tonight i was on the highway again, but due to the freezing rain and hail, i was doing between 40 and 60. Tonight the Gauge never moved from the middle. It was steady all the way until i got on the off ramp at the light, Then it went up and came back down by itself. I didn't hear the fans come on. I went to a local parking lot to do some tests. I parked the car (gauge was in the middle), and reved the engine to raise the temperature. It went up and then came down. Fans did not come on. Strange. I them went back to my house. parked the car, put the hood up and tried to make the fans some on. Here's where it gets interesting...
while in my drive way, the needle goes up, both fans come on high speed, needle drops. I then tried to do it again. Reved the engine for a second, i hear both fans come on high speed, but the needle is in the middle. It did the same thing again with the needle in middle again.
There are no external leaks. engine oil is full. Both fans work, but on high. There is no debris covering the radiator. I replaced the thermostat around april 2011,( it was not a genuine toyota part and didn't have jiggle valve. is that ok? it's been fine all this time.) Timing belt and water pump have not been replaced (so i've been told).
Tomorrow i will check the coolant in the radiator, ignition timing, and check the radiator cap. What are the odds of it being the cooling fan switch or a relay? i only ask because it hasn't come on low speed since this happened. Will warm car up in drive way and see tomorrow.
My fathers truck starts, runs, idles fine but once on the highway at constant speed, the engine misfires or hesitates causing a small buck or jerk but continues on down the road. The SES light is on. He took it to O'Reilly and they put some kind of computer on it and (I think) it said misfire in a cylinder. He replaced one of four O2 sensors, pickup in the distributor (not sure what this is called), wires, and plugs with no cure. This problem is very strange as again, it only does it a constant speed; truck runs fine at idle, acceleration, deceleration, startup, etc. There may be a slight sulfur smell during idle and there is a decrease in gas mileage.
View 14 RepliesI've recently started having a problem where the car will die/engine stall when going highway speed (60-70mph), but only when it is wet/raining outside. I retain electrics/radio, but it seems that the engine just turns off. I get no response from the throttle, the rpms just drop and drop. The last instance, it died on me when I started to apply throttle to speed up from coasting at 60mph in 6th.
If I try to restart the car, it will fire up every time, but will die on the rpm downswing after it first fires up. However, if I give the car revs and maintain them (4-5k rpm) when starting, it stays alive and I can drive away. I've even done this during the last instance where the car died and I restarted while coasting at 40mph. I gave it gas on the restart and drove away and the car resumed completely normal operation.
I got codes relating to the throttle body, misfires, and even a bad ECM! However, the next day when things dried up, it ran completely normal, and continues to every day it is dry.
Again, this only happens when its wet/raining out. I popped open the hood and the top of the engine and ecu/raintray seem dry. However, I do not have a belly pan. Also, the car is VF Stage 2 with the air filter in the passenger bumper area, but it is running the plastic shroud around it.
I will try troubleshooting by having the car at idle and spraying water in different spots in/around/under the engine bay to see if I can reproduce the issue.
My beloved Gen II, with 160,000 miles, this week started stalling (drive systems shutting down) when I press the accelerator to pass or to regain speed after slowing to enter an intersecting roadway. The dreaded red triangle and the check engine light come on. After pulling to the side of the road and fully shutting down, the system will restart, although the warning lights stay lit. (They both go out after a time.) Am out of town for a few weeks and hope to gain some insight that will allow me to wait until I can get the car back to a trusted service department. Suspect fuel filter, but replacement seems to require removal of gas tank.

View 7 RepliesMy truck is a 1997 nissan pickup with. 254,000 miles. Check engine light come on. Only when I am at highway speed. As long as I am in city traffic, nothing I have a code scanner code (PO302) number 2 cylinder misfiring. I change spark plugs and wires and dist cap. But check engine light came back on. I put in shop they claim that they can't find nothing wrong. I guess I need to find a new mechanic.
View 3 RepliesMy Prius v has 1300 miles. I didn't notice at first but now I notice a constant high frequency vibration in the car, especially at highway speeds. Took car to a tire shop and had tires dynamically balanced, same problem. I think it must be the toyo low profile tires or its in the drive train and just inherent to the hybrid system. Seems to be the same whether in eco mode or ev. Vibration is the same on smooth or rough roads. Dealer service manager says he is not aware of any problems. Suggests bring car in for a test drive and compare with another new one.
View 7 RepliesDriving my V10 at around 140 km/hr (87 mph) along the highway and passing a truck (in a tunnel), all of a sudden there was a violent vibration from the roof rack. It seems like it went into its resonance frequency because as soon as I slowed down it went away, and didn't reappear again.
