My 08 prius completely shut off while driving on the california freeways today. No warnings no lights on the dash nothing. Just powered off. Will not start the ready light of any dash lights for that matter work.. tried to jump it.. nothing working. What the he'll can cause thus.. I'm about 500 miles from home with a car just parked. Could a 12v battery cause this no start issue?
View 15 RepliesI have a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo. I took it to the dealership on June 30, for a routine oil change and other maintenance that was due. They did a cooling system flush, and oil change, a power steering flush, and a brake system flush, along with a multipoint inspection, and replaced the belt and tensioner. On July 18 on my way to work in traffic, the vehicle completely shut down with no warning signals. Shortly after the check engine light, the oil light came on. Until then, I had not noticed any warning lights.
At this time I reached down to get a bottle of tea from the passenger front floor board and noticed a slightly oily pink brown liquid on the plastic floor mat. When it was towed to the dealership, they tore the engine apart and reported that the engine overheated, the valve seats came off, the valves hit the pistons splashing metal onto the cylinder walls and requiring an engine rebuild. Is the dealership responsible for not having discovered whatever problem caused the engine to break down? Or causing it somehow during the maintenance on June 30? They feel it is not related.
I bought a 2002 SC430 about 6 months ago. The car has been flawless, until today. Twenty minutes into the drive while on the freeway at 75 mph the speedometer went to 0 and the ABS and Brake warning lights came on. The car and brakes seemed fine, I returned home. In the driveway I turned the car off and then restarted, all was good. No warning lights, and the speedometer worked on a drive down the street.

After driving couple of miles my car completely shut down. I took the exit and after that the car didn't start at all. Even i couldn't start the ignition to connect my OBD scaner to read the codes. Now I even can't do something to read the codes or to turn the engine on somehow, what to do.
View 17 RepliesI was on my way to work this morning when the car just stopped accelerating (or so it felt), all the dash lights came on, I pulled over to the side of the freeway (I was very lucky). Radio and a/c were still working. Powered off, powered on too soon a couple of times - the red triangle and check engine both came on again. Cooled my jets and gave it a few minutes, powered on and the red triangle was gone, but the check engine was still on. Drives perfectly, no problems w/either gas or hybrid engine.
View 19 RepliesOkay, So this has happened to me about five times now over the past year or so. I will be driving and my car will literally shut off. yesterday, I was driving on the freeway and was just cruising at 75mph when all of a sudden out of no where my car makes a big jolt and then the rpm's go from around 3k to 0. I have had this in the shop for this problem many times and no one can really seem to figure out what is wrong. when my car shuts off while im driving, the oil light comes on, traction control light comes on, as well as the battery light. What's even more weird about this problem is once the car stops, if i try to start it right away it wont fire up... It will just roll over. But. if I wait for a while the car starts and drives normal with all the lights off. This is not only annoying but very dangerous.

While i was driving my vehicle on the highway (110 kmph) my car engine shut off completely with no lights. I parked my car on the shoulder and again start my car normally with the key and was able to start it normally. There was no engine check lights or any kind of warning.

View 13 RepliesI have an 03 v10 with a Powerdyne supercharger. The Ex came with an extra computer with a Superchip. The Superchip has a proper tune for the supercharger but when I install it with the extra "bad" computer the truck will completely shut down after driving ~100 miles. This is very dangerous because I lose power steering and brakes during the shutdown. The Ex starts back up after a few minutes and then shuts down more frequently until I reset the computer. I speculate that something is going wrong after the "bad" computer has learned the driving habits.
The other "good" computer works great and does not ever shut off the motor, but at full throttle the Ex will bog and I am losing HP produced by the SC. I don't think it has the optimal tune because my wideband AFR reads lean right before it bogs and I think it is bogging to protect the motor from a lean condition. I would like to install the chip into the "good" computer that never shuts the truck down to get the benefit of the proper tune, but I don't want to risk damaging it or experiencing the dreaded shutdown. A few questions :
- Why the truck shuts down while under power?
- Any reason to think that the chip will cause the "good" computer to shut down while driving?
- Could the chip be causing the shutdown, not the actual "bad" computer itself?
- Would the best option be to send the chip to 5star tunes and have them program a tuner with the superchip tune...and a few others?
- Any way to flash the "good" computer with the superchip tune?
While driving along my Expedition will completely shut down, ignition, all accessories, everything, for a few seconds then come back alive. It happens generally up hills or around right turns.
It is like the main ground strap is loose and losing contact momentarily. I don't know where to look for this. Engine was replaced 1500 miles ago. Battery and all visible connections seem ok.
Started my '07 this morning and after about 10 feet of driving forward all these lights came on. It also said PROBLEM across the digital AC/Consumption display before Problem disappeared and that right box showed up in the top left corner. The giant red ! triangle is solid, NOT flashing.
May not be related at all, but last night when I started my car to come home from work the gas pedal felt non-responsive as if it was trying to use battery power but it wasn't there. I turned the car off, back on, let it idle for 30 seconds before driving and I drove home without a problem.
So I was driving and suddenly three warning lights came on. The Master warning light (Red triangle with !), Check Engine Light and the Hybrid System warning light (Car with !).
My AC works fine and I was able to shut it off and start it back up with no problem. I also did see a difference in driving.
I have those 3 warning lights coming on after driving my 2008 Prius (60,500+) for approx 60+ minutes or more on a fairly warm day.
High 80's+.
I think that the heat buildup under the hood during a short stop is causing some component in the brake system to throw an error.
I was driving my 2006 Prius on the highway (120,000 miles on it). I'd been driving about 10 minutes and all of a sudden, the dash warning lights lit up.

Yello check engine.
The car did NOT lose power. It kept driving fine with no noticeable change in how it operated. Fuel consumption stayed the same. Braking worked fine. I had a completely full tank of gas (had just filled it up before I got on the highway). Temperature outside about around 60 degrees.
I kept driving to my destination (another 20 miles at highway speeds). The car sat parked for about 3 hours. I returned to the car, started it up. The same warning lights appeared, except for the Yellow circle with exclamation point. Plus, this time I noticed on the energy monitor screen the graphic of the red car with the exclamation point.
Again though, everything seemed to be working fine. While the car had been parked for 3 hours I did some browsing through the owner's manual and saw a notation that is the warning lights were only yellow and not red that it was okay to proceed with caution to the nearest dealer.
2008 Prius with @ 70K. Never any problems.
My wife goes and has the oil changed at one the 'stay in your car' 10 minutes changes. They change the oil and replace a couple burnt out bulbs. Drive home the 2 miles to the house and gets ready for work. Leaves for work and sees the 'check engine' light on. Goes back to the oil place, they throw it on the computer and read a PO101 and PO171 code. "has to do with with the fuel mixture". She goes to work 11 miles and back. This a.m.

my much adored 2006 prius just got three warning lights as i was driving and slowing down at a light. The big red triangle- "Master Warning", the Brake System Warning, and also, the Hybrid System Warning. It was like warning lights galore... i'll bring it into the dealership first thing tomorrow, but any clue what's going on? I regularly maintain it. The only other thing that ever went wrong with my car is that the touchscreen quit working years ago, and i refused to spend the 3k for them to connect a silly wire. Why my lights went on and is this something serious?
View 7 RepliesOn my way home tonight - As i was making a turn near my home i got a bunch of warning lights that came up. Red Triangle, VSC, Check engine and i believe the Brake Warning (The little Circle with the ! inside).
The Car drove fine till i got home (only about a mile away at that point). Looked under the hood- nothing that stuck out as being busted but only a quick glance. If i still get the lights in the morning, Off to the dealer. Don't have a Code reader so cant pull anything here at home from the car.
If its related or not is the A/C seemed to get a bit weak in the minutes before the lights turned on - I remember intentionally cranking it up which is something i normally don't do. because the A/C is normally great in the car.
I have to say in the 4.5 years I've had the car - this is the first time I've had this kind of issue. The battery died and had to be replaced like 9 months ago but i didn't get the amount of warning lights I am getting now.
I was driving to work yesterday and my stock radio completely shut off. It will not come back on. The local dealer was very supportive today, however. After a few hours of investigative work & a few calls to Toyota corp. They have determined that it was a bad component in the radio. They are rush ordering me a new one.
View 7 RepliesI was driving down the highway today and the brakes light (!), vsc, and master red triangle warning lights came on, along with a car with an ! in it on the main display screen. There is no noticeable difference in noise, mpg, or breaking performance. From reading through previous forums a bad 12v battery seems to be a common problem. Mine was replaced ~8 months ago. About 2 weeks ago the serpentine belt snapped and the car was drove ~2 miles to my home where I replaced it along with the bad water pump and also the thermostat. Could that have caused my current problem. 130k miles on the car...
View 6 RepliesThe check engine light came on a few times. Went to the old trusty repair shop and the codes pointed to an issue with the catalytic converter. When we started the car again, multiple warning dash lights came on: ABS, (!), Check Engine, and emergency brake light. The brakes also felt very stiff after this.
The mechanic at the shop was taken aback. Said there was a glitch with the computer and that we needed to take it to a dealership to have them "perform initialization of linear solenoid valve and calibration." He said that would fix the issue with the lights.
We were a little upset this happened but love this shop and only stopped going because we moved a few hours away. The mechanic has always been very honest and upfront through the years.
I took the car to the local Toyota dealership today, told them what happened and what the mechanic said. All they did was charge me $100 for a diagnosis of bad catalytic converter pipe and tell me that all the lights came on because the catalytic converter is so far gone. They said they couldn't turn the other lights off until the catalytic converter was replaced.
I don't understand why my brakes are affected when the issue with the car is the catalytic converter. I was also told by the guy at the shop where we first took the car that we would be able to drive with a faulty Catalytic converter with no problem.
The master waning light came on while I was commuting on the freeway. There was no MIL. I've seen this a month or so ago and, as before, since nothing seemed wrong, I kept going. The last time this happened the warning went away after a day or so. This time it is sticking around. As before, there seems to be no problem with the car -- 80 mile commute, no loss of power, same gas mileage as before. I have a generic ELM327 OBD reader. I tried reading codes but there were none (at least none that it could read since there was no MIL).
Any second source for the Prius Mini-Scanner (or have one they want to sell)? Or, can a regular OBD scanner be trained to read the special prius codes?
