My 2007 with 155,000 mi started making a strange noise - It is also burning oil. I am pretty sure it is not valves - it sounds like hanging silverware clanking together in the wind. The sound might be a bad water pump or a loose timing chain. That is what I would picture those sounding like. It would seem like the water pump is pretty easy to replace.
View 8 RepliesI have a 2007 Prius with 136,500 miles on it. Love this car. Getting 53.3mpg currently. A while ago I started noticing a strange sound coming from the passenger side of the car where the engine is. Recently the sound has become more pronounced and it has me stumped. The noise occurs upon acceleration, but not all of the time. If the battery is at 2 purple bars and I accelerate, the noise is very noticeable. But once I get to cruise speed it goes away. Again, this is sometimes and not all the time. Hopefully it's nothing, but I figured I would post this incase something is on the verge of failing so I may catch it in time.
View 7 RepliesThe other night I was going up the mountain and while going it started making a clicking noise..probably from no oil..We had been told from the dealership there was a small leak but nothing to worry about at the moment.We tested it and it wasn't leaking visibly but I guess with it getting cold out the hole got bigger and we didn't notice so all the oil leaked out as we were powering the lil car through the mountains..Needless to say on the cruise down it started shaking i saw some sparks and I think the rod went through my engine block and we broke down. It's completely dead. The car has right around 200,000 miles on it and has always been very well taken care of.I just traded my dad the car about 7 months ago for my 4-runner cause of gas prices..I moved across the country and of course have had NOTHING BUT PROBLEMS since day one.
View 8 RepliesI would describe the noise as a whirling/vibration sound that can be heard as soon as the gas engine portion of the car kicks in (even in park) but gets louder and more noticeable as the car is in motion, especially at highway speeds (55 - 65mph). Opening the hood and listening to the engine block, the noise is definitely coming from around the area of the silver-covered portion by the driver's-side, which I believe is the hybrid synergy engine. The noise has gotten to the point where I really get bothered by it driving anywhere, and I have to turn up the radio to try to drown out the noise.
View 2 RepliesI need to diagnose an issue I've had with my 2007 Prius with 79,000 miles on it. Several months ago I noticed a distinctive whining/humming noise coming somewhere from the engine compartment of the car while driving. The noise may be present at lower speeds, but the volume of the noise appears to increase proportionately with my acceleration and as such is most noticeable at highway speeds of 50 - 70 miles per hour. As I accelerate faster, the noise level seems to increase. If I take my foot off the gas and coast, decreasing speed, the whining noise gets lower in volume. I believe I first noticed this noise about 6 months ago, but wasn't more proactive about it like I normally would be because at first the noise didn't seem overly loud and my extended warranty unfortunately was up once I hit 77,000 miles. Now 6 months after I first noticed the noise, I believe it's definitely louder than it was when I first heard it, so much so that I can pick it out over the radio being on at a decent volume.
After checking some forums I thought the culprit might be a wheel bearing. I took it into a local Midas shop at they informed me that my passenger-side front wheel bearing was actually breaking apart in pieces. Obviously I had that wheel bearing replaced but I was also hoping this was the source of the whining noise. Unfortunately that wasn't the case as driving it home the noise was still present. They also said the tires were not balanced properly (from my Toyota Dealership no less when I had them install new tires) so I had the tires rebalanced as well. They did take the car for a test drive but probably stop looking for issues with the car as soon as they saw the wheel bearing in that condition. Also that shop does not specialize in Prius' or hybrids so they might not be able to notice the noise that shouldn't be there like I can.
Other than wheel bearings, where this noise could be coming from. Some posts on here possibly pointed to the ICE water pump or transaxle fluid (which as far as I know has never been replaced since I bought the car new).
How much engine noise is typical on the highway at 70 mph.

View 2 RepliesI have a 2007 Camry LE, with about 104,000 miles on it. Lately I've noticed a noise ONLY when the car is idling, rather in park or drive. I don't hear it all when I'm driving. It's somewhat hard for me to tell if it's coming from the engine or under the car, but its definitely near the front and sounds lower in the body. My first instinct told me that it was related to the exhaust system, but it doesn't quite sound like a rattle. It sounds closer to a belt struggling to turn...it actually sounds a little bit like when my water pump and alternator went, but I had those replaced 15 months ago so I really don't think it's that at all. I also had the radiator replaced 2 months back, so I don't think it's that. I don't know drive far to work, so I haven't put a lot of miles on the car in the last year.
Otherwise the car drives normally, just hear this sound at idle. The only other thing I've noticed over time is that when the car gets to about 2500-3000 miles after an oil change, I notice the light flashes when making hard turns..but that's it, and it goes away when I get the oil changed. Obviously I know that the engine is burning oil probably faster than it should, but I'm not sure if that might somehow be related to what I'm hearing above.
Just recently starting hearing a loud roaring noise while driving my 07 Camry V6 XLE. It sounds like the gears are not shifting, like it is staying in low gear. Sometimes the sound will lessen if I'm driving over 15 mins. and some times it doesn't. RPM is around 2 or less, typically 1.5. Tried to check the transmission fluid but could find the stick. The car has about 142,000 miles. I hope the engine is not going.

View 3 RepliesWhile we continue to enjoy our recently acquired Mineral Gray 2011 Santa Fe, I have noted a momentary engine noise upon startup after it has been shut down for say 2 hours or more.
The noise reminds me of having an oil filter with a malfunctioning or absent drain back valve where by the bearings will complain for 2-3 seconds until oil pressure rebuilds
The SF has but 20.7K miles on it to date. Do we know of this is usual for the V6, or should I be concerned and planning a dealer visit?
I love the power of the V6! We test drove a 4 cylinder model first thinking that was the way to go for economy reasons. I found this one with such low mileage, AWD, and the V6 at a great price so we jumped on it.
I am a little disappointed though that the AWD does not function "full time" like that on my 04 Dodge Durango. The SF runs rings around the Durango in the mpg department though.
I recently purchased a 2011 Santa Fe SE with the 3.5 V6 Engine. When I start it up for the first time in the morning or after its been sitting for a few hours, the engine sounds likes it's insides are rattling for about 10 seconds or so... I believe the lifters are probably pumping up and it's a valve train noise... but is this normal? I don't like this sound. the previous owner used Mobil 1 synthetic oil and that is what is in there now. Is this a good choice for this engine? Is there an oil filter with a check valve that can be used to hold pressure to the valve train on start up? Is this cartridge type oil filter all that is used on these engines?
View 18 RepliesHaving been on a long road trip, I noticed that every time I switch off the engine, there is a grinding noise coming from the engine. Took the van in to Toyota for a regular service, they could not find anything wrong. I then took it to an alignment place having replaced all four tires. They heard the noise straight away and think it is a worn bearing in the cooling fan in the alternator. 2007 Toyota Sienna LE FWD... The car only has 22,956 miles on it.

View 8 RepliesMy 07 prius makes REALLY LOUD TIRE NOISES. It sounds like I have mud-terrain tires on my car. I know I need a alignment because the tires are cupping. Would this cure the irregular tire noise?
The tires are not the stock Goodyear Integrity(?) but aftermarket. I can't recall off the top of my head but I know when I first got them they never made close to this much noise.
My 2007 Prius Hybrid (92k miles) has developed a loud humming noise. It seems to be coming from in front of the driver side under the hood.
The hum begins at less than 20 mph and changes "pitch" with speed. It sounds like a tire with low air (not the problem). It also changes when the car is turned from side to side. No change in performance or MPG otherwise.
Wheel bearing is what most are saying along with a fluid situation with the transaxle.
I have noticed the past months (maybe for a while, probably picked it up just a few weeks ago) when I accelerate, I hear this grinding noise, but once I let go of the gas pedal, and slowly get back on it, the grinding noise goes away. To give a better example, when I step on the gas as I normally do, this grinding noise (it is coming from the front, I feel like it is coming from the passenger side, can't confirm 100%) but once I let go of the gas pedal, it goes away. The noise itself starts when I start picking up speed from a full stop, so when I am going at around 0-30 MPH I hear the noise, after that, I honestly can't tell (road noise may be blocking it off, not sure).
I went around the car and tires, and everything looks fine, I have no error codes thrown at me, thus, I am posting here as I really want to fix this issue as it is really bugging me. (It doesn't impact my drive, but that grinding noise is definitely not the normal sounds of a Prius).
I noticed recently that on my 2007 Camry i4 @ 110k miles, engine rattles pretty noticeably when I have the AC on AND while on reverse. Once I either turn off the AC or shift to D drive the rattle is no more. This noise is pretty consistent.
Not sure if this is a common problem, but could this be a problem with the water pump/alternator?
