Headlight symbol says headlights on - but no headlights on 2006 Prius.

View 19 RepliesLast month my red triangle would pop up along with the yellow head light symbol. Most times it would be for a few seconds, other times it would stay on for a few minutes. Today I rotated my tires and I thought I would check out leveling sensor while the tires were off.
I took my left rear tire off and this is what I saw when the sensor was removed.
So everything looked normal to me. Looks can be deceiving. I've seen pictures on here of leveling sensors where the guts are completely rotted out. That's what I was thinking I was going to see. Here is a picture of the bolt side of the sensor:
Again, it looked normal to me. If you don't know what you're looking for, especially if parts aren't mangled, it can look normal. So I took the four screws off of the sensor and this is what I saw:
The inside of the sensor was in pristine condition! The springs are shiny gold and there was only a small amount of dust inside the sensor. I started to think about how the sensor works and I figured out that the sensor must move in some way. Hmmm. But there was no bracket on it to turn the sensor.
I have a 2004 Prius with self-leveling headlights. I have no problems seeing at night but i have a red triangle on the dash and the headlight symbol on the monitor. I was able to aim the lights level when the self-leveling sensor broke. but is there a way to disable the sensor so i don't have any of those symbols on the dash or monitor it just is pain to look at the the sensor cost to much and it doesn't have any affect on driving during the day or night.
View 2 RepliesI drive a 2007 Prius - about 185k miles on it and purchased it used a few years ago. It's needed minor maintenance to it but overall it's served me well.
I hopped in my car this evening and went to turn on the headlights. After turning the knob, the lights came on - then both faded and turned off. These are halogen bulbs. Here's what I have tested - I don't have light in my driveway...
My 06 prius takes a very long time to provide heat to the cabin. In temps below 20 F it can take 20 minutes. Today in 16 F weather the red triangle came on, followed by a problem banner, followed by a thermostat symbol. The triangle and symbol turned on a off a couple of times over a 5 minute span. I had been driving the car from a cold start for about 15 minutes when this happened. The car did start to produce some, but not a lot, of heat at about 20 minutes into the drive. I was also forced to use the defroster intermittently for the first 15 minutes (blew only cold air). After parking the car for 20 minutes I drove 20 minutes home with no triangle or thermostat symbol. Most of the way home I had sufficient heat.
I do have the front blocked with pipe insulation. I have owned my 06 prius for over a year and it has 257,000 on it.
Could the thermostat and triangle be caused by a low engine temp? If so would a stuck thermostat be a potential culprit?
Can I assume that if my car is blowing cold air when I am asking for heat that the engine is not over heating?
Every now and then one of the HID headlights goes out on our 2006 Prius, seems to be a random event not favoring either headlight. Shutting the headlights off, then turning them back on again corrects the issue. The problem with using this fix is that it isn't good for the HID bulb.
View 2 RepliesMy Toyota prius 2006 get red triangle light appears when I start the engine and it disappears when I drive the car. When I stop the car, it comes back again. The warning light is like in the picture I attached.
View 8 RepliesI have Xenon HID, adaptive headlights, what ever you want to call them. Normally, I run my headlights in Auto, which means the fogs are off. This morning I needed the fogs so when I turned them on, the right headlight went out, throwing up the fault light.
I ordered a pair of bulbs this morning but on my way home, the lights were functional again in Auto. As a test, I turned on the fogs again and sure enough, the right low beam went out and the fault light lit up.
Is this an early indicator of a bulb going or is related to something else?
I have a 2006 Prius that I purchased with no upgrade on the headlights. There was an upgrade available for high intensity lights, but, I didn't get them. The low beam on the passenger side headlight just stopped working. Two questions:
1. I was just told by the Toyota dealership that to replace the headlight, the entire front end of the car would need to be dropped. They just told me that with them supplying the bulbs, the cost would be about $250 plus tax. If I supply the bulbs, only about $200 plus tax. My owners manual indicates that this is a do-it-yourself project. Is this true or is the dealership trying to make money off of me?
2. When I do replace the lights, I would like to put in something that would put out more light than what I have now. I have been told to be careful because many replacement lights throw off so much heat that the housing around the bulb could melt. Also, I have read that some of these replacement bulbs have a very short working lifetime of 1-2 years. Obviously, I would want to keep away from them.
After driving for 2 or 3 miles my car turns on this red triangle and says "problem" on the GPS. All the threads i have found this is accompanied by a check engine light but mine does not. On the gps there is also a symbol that i looked up in the manual, it says to take the car to a dealer. is there any way to know exactly what this triangle means? There is not CEL tripped, tried 4 code reader and nothing.
View 5 Replies2010 prius this symbol is not explained in the book that i can find. it flashes so quick i can hardly see it to tell what it is but it appears to be a comb of car and lock symbol ONLY FLASHES WITH POWER OFF Just started doing this, almost looks like a lock reminder but just now shows it face
View 6 RepliesI just tried to start my Prius this morning and nothing happened except a quick flashing red indicator light which looks like a lock symbol. Not sure what's going on.
View 11 RepliesI bought a used 2008 prius about a month ago with 44,000 miles. Tonight when I went out to get something out of the car, I noticed a flashing light on the dashboard. It looks like a car but is flashing so quickly I am not certain. I can't find anything about it.
View 4 RepliesThe tire symbol stays on now for some reason...I had nothing done but it just came on and hasn't gone away....Is there away to shut this light off or do I have a problem, 2006 prius #7 .......
View 9 RepliesLast night we went to look at some Christmas lights in a drive through park. There was a sign in the beginning of the park that said "Headlights off please." This seems to be impossible on the Touareg. I turned the headlight switch to off but the daytime running lights stayed on. After calling my salesman at VW, he asked many service techs how to do this and they have never been approached with such a question. They were stumped. The salesman told me that I can shut the daytime running lights off by depressing the emergency brake but that doesn't even work. The lights still remain on. Is there a way to shut the headlights off?
View 24 RepliesI have an '06 Prius with ~170k miles on it. I bought an extended warranty, and it's scheduled for diagnostics for an AC issue next week. However, I was driving my wife to work when this happened ...
Cruise Control shut off, but the car handled just fine. We weren't far from our destination, so I got her there, parked it, and shut it off. I powered it back on after a minute or two, and only the check engine light came on.
I haven't checked the fuses yet (too dark and too high traffic where I am), and I'm not the most knowledgeable when it comes to cars.
I'm parking the car (gen. 2) a long while, so I checked the manual which shows the deactivation button on/off positions. It show the button sticking out more = the off position. However, the car symbol still blinks on the dashboard.
View 2 RepliesYesterday, my vehicle stability control light came on along with the ABS symbol. I stopped the car and turned it back on and the car would not come out of Park.
I restarted the car and was able to shift into drive but, both symbols remained and the MFD showed no regenerative braking and the brakes were clearly mechanical only by sound and feel.
I think I took a rather short trip with the parking brake partially engaged, I was talking to my son who was home for the weekend.
I set and released it several times with no results. I finally parked the car, set the brake and checked for codes in my Scangauge-none. But, I did a "clear codes" anyhow.
I've only driven home yesterday and this morning to work. So far, nothing unusual, I have my fingers and stubby little toes crossed.
I woke up this morning and started up my 2005 prius to warm up. I live in New England and it freezing out today. About 15 min or so later I go back out to the car that only had the heat on and I find a large red caution symbol on the dash. I check to see if the e brake is on and thats when I look up and see it, the main battery symbol on the gps screen. I looked at my battery and only one small bar was lit up. I then noticed that the engine sounded like it was giving all it had. I turned off the car and went inside to call Toyota. I am waiting to hear back from someone in service to tell me if I can drive it. I have under 90k and it is due for an oil change maybe it's over by 100 miles. I did get the recall for the water pump and was planning to have it done with the oil change.
View 9 RepliesTook the Prius on a little journey the last couple of days. Drove over 700 miles, mostly highway, and the weirdest thing happened to me during that drive.
History: This Prius has a bad HV Battery, in that about 3 modules are weaker than the rest, and the car likes to throw 3006, and corresponding codes for the modules themselves as it sees fit. When this happens, the "BRAKE" indicator along with the "ENGINE SYMBOL" pop up, and the engine revs up above 2000rpm, yet less than 3000rpm, and the drivetrain shuts down output to the wheels. Best I can explain it anyhow.
Other than having to pull over to the side of the roadway, reset the codes and start the car again, all operates fine, until the codes pop up again.
But in this long drive, I was able to repeat 5 times, what has happened once in a great while, but these times, I was able to realize something during the events.
The car, when traveling down an incline, at the very moment the codes were thrown, would start surging in speed, and would not disengage or stop, even if I took my foot off of the accelerator and pressed the brake. I could press the brake long enough that the drivetrain would finally disengage, yet the engine would rev up well over 3000rpm, so much, I felt it best to turn off the keyswitch, and coast to the side of the roadway.
I have a 2005 Prius with 240,000 miles. About 4 months ago the triangle warning symbol appeared. A friend and I decided to pull the big battery out of the car and find the bad cells. We did that, replace two and the car worked fine for 4 months. The triangle warning has returned. We have done several things but the triangle remains. We pulled the big battery out and checked all of the cells. We replaced one that was probably OK. The latest reading was 8 volts on cells all but one at 7.9. We cleaned all of the bus contacts. We went into the maintenance mode on the MFD and found the aux battery to be 12.6 volts and under load it dropped to 11.8 with the lights on.
The aux battery went up to 14.1 volts with the car on. The inverter cooling fluid has movement and there is a slight humming which I believe to be the inverter pump running. The inverter fluid was topped off. The MFD showed the battery bars start at about three fourths full, drop down to one bar. With the engine running the battery bars climbed to the top purple. The engine turned off and the bars continued to climb to all green. All of this occurred in about 3 minutes while the car was parked. There were codes on the MFD while in maintenance mode. I understand that these codes are for the navigation system and the audio system.
