My 2006 Prius makes this noise - like a groaning sound for about 5 seconds - when I shutdown the engine. Always happens when I am NOT at the dealership. Generally happens when the engine is hot. What this might be?
View 2 RepliesOne year ago, after driving 8 or so hrs., at 108,000 mi, my 2003 Buick Rendevous started making a groaning sound which would last 15-30 seconds. When exiting the turnpike, the sound lasted nearly 1 min. The next day, the Buick dealer could find no cause but put a new serpentine belt on it which solved the problem for a few months. (I had previously replaced the serpentine belt at 96,000 mi as routine maintenance.) After a couple months, I heard the sound again and took it to my local Buick dealer who could find nothing. It was o.k. for about 6 mo. Now it groans again. My local mechanic heard it but could find no cause. It groaned almost constantly a couple days ago while I was driving in slow traffic w/the a/c on but quit when I turned the a/c off. It sometimes groans with the a/c off, especially on a turn from a stop sign. I now have 114,000 mi. The sound seems to be originating from the engine.

View 1 RepliesI can here this squawking under my hood for 30 sec or so after every engine stop, when parking. I purchased the car used with 19,500 Kilometers. This noise has always been there. Is this normal? I believe the noise is from the inverter coolant pump? I don't hear this when the car is running, but then my hearing is not the greatest?
View 7 RepliesEngine oil has been changed and spark plugs changed. The engine is still making rattling/clicking noise. I checked with a mechanic and he indicated that engine needs to be repaired. Didn't say exactly what needs to be done and stated it would cost about $2200 for parts and labor. Why the engine keeps rattling and making the noise? Oh, before plugs were changed, the engine was shutting off at times when in idle mode.

View 14 RepliesMy 2.4L engine is making a clanking noise while running. When I checked the oil level today, it was low by about 1.5 quarts. There's no check engine light.
Car has 74K miles now. I purchased the car two years ago with 35K miles. I have always performed regular maintenance myself. The car had its oil control valve replaced at 55K miles.

I have 111,000 miles on my car and I take great care of the engine (or I try at least). I recently just had my first timing belt, water pump, and other belts changed 2 months ago with no problems at all. Recently, my engine just started making an annoying "whining" noise. It almost sounds like a bad transmission or something. However, it makes the same sound in "idle" and whenever I rev the engine the whining noise gets louder. I know the noise is coming from the left side of the engine and I think it may be my alternator dying. When I move the steering wheel around the sound does not get any worse too.
View 9 RepliesRecently my engine started making a rattling noise. It does not matter if the engine is warm or cold. In either condition it produces the same noise. The noise can be best heard at the back of the engine. My car is a Sonata 2.4 GLS from 2006 and has roughly 110000km on the odometer.

I have been wanting to get the new GS. My friend/coworker bought one a few months back and I have been going out to lunch with him many times over the past months. The only two things that kept me holding my breath forever are: (1) wood trim my wife would NOT say yes to a car with wood trim in it! Don't ask me why. And I don't feel like ignoring wifeys opinion. I can only tell her that if she wants a Lexus or a Benz, start getting used to wood ASAP (2) the new GS engine's idle noise seems to be a lot louder than any old GS and LS. Every time I get into my friend's car, I hear this ringing noise. It's actually louder than a lot of other Toyota-made or Honda-made cars. Of course once I get into the GS, I can't hear no noise at all which is great. But on the outside, it sounds like a car that needs serious valve adjustments done.
I mentioned the noise to a Lexus dealer two months back when I test drove a GS. He said the noise is from the new direct fuel injection mechanism. So it is a side effect of a feature, not a bug. The noise sounds like a very fine high pitch valve tapping noise. Imagine tiny pieces of metal ringing somewhere in the wheel well. Gen 3 GS owners, can you confirm what I am hearing? Is that noise normal? Do the other non-Lexus fuel injection cars exhibit the same symptom?
My 2006 f150 was making a noise that's coming from the engine. It sound like rocks in the engine. When I'm going 50-60 MPH the engine starts to make a sounds like rocks in the engine. What's happening. When I go about 40 it stops.

One thing I have noticed is that between 55-65 miles per hour I hear a cyclical engine noise every one to two seconds. It is a hum followed by another hum. The noise is not constant but has a one or two second delay between hums. But this cycle is constant between these two speeds. Is this a normal engine sound? If so, why do I notice it only between about 55-65 miles per hour? A technician at a Toyota dealership told me that the 2010 Prius has 26 onboard computers to detect any problems. He said that if there was an issue a red triangle would appear on the display to alert me to any type of problem. I am about to make a 3,000 mile round trip in the Prius and need to know if this cyclical engine noise is cause for concern or just a normal part of the electric/gas engines operation.

View 12 RepliesI have a 2010 Sonata V6 that I bought new. It has a little less than 50K on it. I tried to start it today and it made a terrible noise then died seconds later. I popped the hood and then started it again and the engine was shaking violently in the engine compartment and making a terrible knocking noise. I had driven it 12 hours earlier and it ran fine. I called a tow truck and had it taken to the dealer but if I know my dealer, since it is Sunday they probably wont get to it until Tuesday. Also, this car has had the signature V6 valve cover leak that has been fixed 3 times. I noticed it was leaking again about a month ago and I have just been checking the oil and adding it as it needs it. I dont think the engine ran out of oil because I checked it before the tow truck came and it was between low and full.
View 2 Replies120K (64 by me & 56 by prior owner during first 6 1/2 yrs) I was having a groaning noise when going around corners especially when headed down hill and hitting the brakes at the same time. I also had a rattle or popping going over bumps. I couldn't isolate the noise and nothing felt loose in the front end when I jacked it up. The dealer said the lower control arm bushings and ball joints needed to be replaced for $1545. I asked about front struts and was told that the control arm bushing and ball joints had to be replaced first before the struts could be examined.
I replaced the control arm assemblies (had to lower front cross member while supporting engine w/large jack and removing lower engine dog bone), ball joints, stabilizer bars and stabilizer bushings myself. Ball joints required removing axles and steering knuckle assembly to remove metal CV dust shield on back side of steering knuckle. (will post procedure later). Had lined up and the noise changed (groaning on corners left and rattle became pronounced on all bumps like the front end was about to fall out). By the way no cracks or excessive wear on any of the rubber components as I have always seen on the Subaru and other cars I had.
2001 Prius. Within 15 seconds of starting the engine, I captured the screeching sound from the engine bay. Noise went away after about 20 seconds. New serpentine belt and new 12v battery installed. Pass dealer 27-point check. Transmission fluid, inverter fluid, high voltage battery were replaced about 18,000 miles ago. Current mileage 174,000.

It was -35 degrees Celsius (-31 Fahrenheit) this morning. My Prius v was parked in the driveway. When I started my car the engine produced a grinding sound. The sound lasted between 30 seconds to a minute, then it went away. I was able to capture this in a video:

I'm trying to figure out what is wrong with my Prius. A few weeks ago, there was a big rainstorm in California, and I accidentally backed into what I think was a storm drain under very deep water. I heard a big thunk, but there was no visible damage to the car. A few days later, I noticed a low groaning noise that comes from inside the cabin, somewhere around the center console/front passenger side. I usually only hear it when I am moving at low/moderate speeds and turning the wheel to the left, although occasionally if the road is bumpy I hear it with my wheels straight ahead. For a couple weeks, I thought the noise only happened when moving-- however, last Friday, I was sitting in the car, which was parked on a hill with the wheels curbed (steering wheel all the way to the left). I turned the car on, and immediately the car started groaning (even though the car was in park). Then, after about 30 seconds, the gas engine turned off (I think that's what happens when the car gets much quieter after idling for a bit) and the noise stopped. SO, it happened when the car was in park as well.
View 6 RepliesI brought my prius v back to the dealer for the fourth time because of the groaning noise from the rear brakes. I was told that Toyota is aware of the problem and they are designing a new rear brake. They expect it to be ready for installation after January 1st, 2013. Let's hope it isn't too far after the first of the year.
