On my 2005 with 234k miles on it the engine has a bit of a piston slap. Its not severe but the noise is there and I have been trying a few different 5w30 oils to try and quiet the noise a bit. I have found some better than others but since its time for an oil change again I am considering bumping up in viscosity and giving a 40 weight oil a try to see if a little heavier oil might work for it out a bit.

I did find out noise goes away when unhook alternator wire and comes back when reattach. Found someone replaced there alternator and that didn't fix it either. I think its electrical?
I have a 2005 mk4 Gli 1.8T with 69,000 miles. This ticking sound that I hear from the inside of my car is coming from the right side of the engine bay. It starts during idle. It starts ticking and gets a little faster and then stops for a few seconds then begins again. It fully stops while driving. I changed tensioner, belt, serpentine belt, water pump, and oil change with mobile 1 synthetic 0w-40.
View 6 RepliesSo I have had my 2005 Prius for over a year now. I love my car but after 7 months it made a whining noise coming from by the pulley. When I would accelerate the noise would get worse. Engine light came on tested and said loss of power. The car would not go up large hills it was gutless. So I parked it. I recently just replaced the pulley and now the noise is gone. I have been driving it short distances and at about 30 miles per hour the car would sputter and hesitate. I would let off the gas and push down on gas pedal lighter and it would go fine.
View 19 RepliesIt sounds like it is coming from the Hybrid Drive. It is really loud. I can hear it as I drive down the road. The best I can figure out from reading forums is it might be some time of coolant pump the drive uses. It starts as soon as I open the door before I start it and it will keep doing it after the car is turned off.

View 1 RepliesSo we have an oil leak in our 2005. It is coming from the front of the engine on the passenger side. The oil was changed on May 15th. And it has only leaked since then. Any thoughts on what it may be? What part of the engine deals with oil in that part of the engine compartment? We will take it back to the place that last changed it and have them check it out as well.

View 14 RepliesI started noticing some strange sounds coming from the engine compartment after shutting off the car ( a 2007 with 90K miles). It's different from the hum for several seconds that I often hear after switching off the car. This one is a squeaky rough sound like a small motor wearing out. I think it's from the driver side of the engine compartment. Is that where the inverter pump is? This car didn't have any record of needing the inverter pump changed for the recall as far as I could tell.

He said it sounded like metal rattling around. It lasted about 30 sec. then went away. What this may be?? It hasn't happened since.
View 7 RepliesI've decide to replace the engine in a 2005 Prius. For whatever reason it went bad around 110,000 miles. It was making some noise and then went all at once. I don't know the complete maintenance history of the car, but I know it was pretty regular. I also know the car was driven mainly highway miles and on A LOT of dirt roads. So, the oil may have needed more frequent oil changes.

Anyways I can hear, maybe, on the gas engine what sounds like a bad water pump or tension pulley, not sure though? I checked the water pump area and there is no visible signs of a leak or dried pink coolant. If the water pump is indeed bad what can I expect at the Toyota dealership cost wise?

View 1 RepliesMy 2010 Prius V just past the 24000km mark. I have a buzzing noise coming from the engine bay during startup. It happens when the interior fan is on. You can hear it clearly after you start the car, during the silence of the "boot up", before the ICE kicks in. I can't be sure if it continues to buzz after that because the sound of the ICE drowns it out. However, If I shut off the fan during the boot up, the buzz disappears. Finally, if I leave the fan off and start the car, there is no buzz.
During a recent oil change, a hybrid technician claims that this is normal. It used to happen infrequently but now it is consistent, so if it was normal, I should have heard it when the car was new.
I have a 2004 Prius that has a ticking noise coming from the engine compartment It speeds up and slows down with the idle of the engine or the pressing of the accelerator. Appears to be coming from the passenger side (US). No diagnostic codes have come up.

View 3 Repliesi have been hearing a rattling noise coming from the engine under acceleration only. It isn't a super consistent rattle, seems to only happen when accelerating from lower speeds. And sometimes you don't hear and other times you do. It's not a bad rattle or knock it's more of a ticking/light rattling sound that is definitely abnormal.
I know my brake accumulator is barking at me and the 3 way coolant valve is going bad as sometimes I get a constant pumping sound. I don't think these have anything to do with it but thought I'd mention it.
I first noticed a strange noise coming from the engine compartment a day ago. I had left the car to sit in the sun for a few hours. When I got in the A/C was set to on and the system was on auto. I tested to see if the noise went away when I turned off the A/C and it did. I turned it back on and it returned. I know the A/C operates at different speeds based upon cooling needs and that it can get sort of noisy but I didn't think that it could/should get this loud. The system seems to begin working quickly and it does seem to put out cold air. If the noise is unusual do you think that it indicates another underlying problem in the A/C system?
Just to clarify, the ICE is not running in the video. The cabin fan is set to low and the temperature is set to low. The person in the car presses the A/C button and the cooling fans in the engine compartment come on as well as the A/C unit. The sound gets louder a few seconds in. My 2005 with 160k miles has engine noise when cold.
I talked to a couple specialists who said it could be valve noise another said valve noise would not abate when the engine warmed up. He suspected piston slap. A valve adjustment is pricey and the local independents are afraid to touch it given the complexity and needed shim packs. If it is piston slap I would be disappointed after spending a pile of dough to still have the same noise.
Have I missed a possible cause?
I would describe the noise as a whirling/vibration sound that can be heard as soon as the gas engine portion of the car kicks in (even in park) but gets louder and more noticeable as the car is in motion, especially at highway speeds (55 - 65mph). Opening the hood and listening to the engine block, the noise is definitely coming from around the area of the silver-covered portion by the driver's-side, which I believe is the hybrid synergy engine. The noise has gotten to the point where I really get bothered by it driving anywhere, and I have to turn up the radio to try to drown out the noise.
View 2 RepliesMy son has a 05 Pontiac g6 that has been making a lot of noise coming from the steering he thinks. I haven't had a chance to hear or look at it, but I was wondering whats the worst case scenario gonna cost. I guess it has electric power steering instead of conventional. I know nothing about these. It has 158000 miles on it if that matters.
