Can't figure this one out. I've had the car about 9 months and this is the first time I've ever had an issue filling it up with gas. Basically, if I tried to pump it much faster than a trickle, the pump would shut off. It must have taken me five minutes to pump a little less than nine gallons in. And the frustrating part about that is that you never know which of the click-offs is the one you should stop at.
View 19 RepliesI just bought a 2014 Prius- Pkg. 2 car. I had an '06 & an '08 Prius and kept the tire pressure @ 44 Lb.s for maximum mileage. I always fill my tank to the top well after the pump clicks off.
1) The dlr. told me I will only get an accurate MPG by not filling the tank after the pump clicks off. He claims the computer doesn't read the extra 1-2 gallons and that is causing me to get about 35 MPG even though the trip meter says 50 MPG.
2) The dlr. told me not to run my tires @ 44 lbs. Said it is a safety issue. I've been doing 44 lbs. since 2006 with great mileage and no safety issues.
Am I wrong for filling my tank to the top? My Prius has just over 600 miles today.
I was filling up my tank, as I was running in fumes a few days ago (just 14 miles before death as per trip computer) and to my surprise, when I filled my tank, it only went roughly up to 16 gallons (15.9xx to be precise) before the nozzle kept shutting off. Was the nozzle defective (or was I in a rush for not waiting until the vapors leave the tank?) or the 18.5 gallon tank has a ~2.5 gallon reserve that even the instrument gauge doesn't account for, as it was all the way in the E with the yellow gas pump icon on?

View 5 RepliesI'm a little paranoid about letting the pump auto shut-off on its own when filling up. Every pump I've been too have a long spring and the nozzle doesn't go very far in, not like the regular gas pumps. So I stop it manually when I think it gets close to being full. Do you all just let it auto stop or stop it manually?
View 6 RepliesRecently, my Accent has been acting up (twice) while filling the tank. I haven't done any work on it that would cause this recently, but while fueling, the pump will click and stop repeatedly, as if the tank was full. It takes sometimes 20 minutes just to put 8 gallons in it. I've tried two separate pumps. Next fill-up, I'll try a different gas station because I've heard that can sometimes be a problem. They said their pumps weren't empty so that's not the case.

The auto shut off on the pump does not kick in until there is fuel running down the side of the truck and onto the ground. What changed and how to fix it?
View 1 RepliesI have a Kia Optima, 2007. I've had the car since 2009 and about a year after having it, started having trouble filling the gas tank. I do NOT top off. However, if I allow the tank to fill until the pump shuts off, more often than not, gas comes overflowing back out of the car. Not only is it an environmental concern, but it's also a waste of money because I've now paid for the gas that's pooling on the ground. The amount that comes out varies, but is typically at least a few cups worth. This has happened to my husband as well when he has filled my tank. Neither of us top off. I've brought it to the dealership multiple times and they can find nothing wrong. Someone suggested it was more an issue with the gas pumps not shutting off when they're supposed to, but this happens at varies stations. Plus, no one else I know has this issue, so I can't imagine how this is a gas station issue. The car was rear-ended 6 months after I got the car and the side with the gas tank was pushed into another car, but the damage was minimal (the point of impact was the opposite side). Again, we do NOT top off.
View 2 RepliesI filled my 2010 Prius IV. Every day since, my indicated MPG has gone up about one MPG, with my 40 mile round trip to work.
I had been running around 46-48 MPG indicated this winter. Next day it was up over 50. Yesterday 52, today it is up to 53 mpg and I have used 1/2 tank on 256 miles, which is much better than my winter stats.
How many miles does it say you can drive after you fill up? Mine says 334 and that's what I'm getting. I want to hit 400 for a tank and can't.
View 13 RepliesI have a 2012 Prius 3 that's about 1 1/2 months old with about 1,500 miles. I remember when it had 3 miles and the dealer filled it up it showed a 600+ mile range. Since then I've had a few fill ups where I've gotten it down to about 20-40 miles left in the range and when I fill it up it's only filling up with just under 10 gallons and showing a range of about 475 miles. If I remember correctly the fuel tank is 12.9 gallons so I feel like I'm not filling up to those last two gallons. Not sure what's going on.
View 2 RepliesThe last several times I've gone for gas, the car won't recognize the smart key after fill up, either in or out of the slot. It does not recognize either of my 2 smart keys. I have changed the batteries in both keys. I am able to lock/unlock doors, but not start the car. The red light on the dash indicates there is no key. Dealer cannot find the problem. Eventually the car does start after some time (5 to 20 minutes) and I have not been able to identify what changes to make it so.
View 8 RepliesTen days ago I bought a 2016 Prius to replace my 2011 Prius. Since the new Prius was delivered with a full tank of gas I did not need gas until yesterday. When I stopped at the gas station there was a 40 to 50 mph wind blowing on the driver's side and I could hardly stand up to put the gas into the car. When I tried to put the gas in the nozzle would shut off after a couple of seconds. I tried taking the nozzle out and putting it back in and using a very slow flow but it continued to shut off. After a few attempts several ounces of gas ran out of the fill hole and I gave up trying to put gas in the car. I thought that something might be wrong with the car but with the dealer's service department closed I could not ask about it. Today I went back to the gas station with very little wind and the tanked filled fine, no problems. Has problems filling a gas tank with high winds?

A couple of days ago, I was about to take a long road trip. Stopped to top off gas tank (yes, I squeezed the handle a few more times than I probably should have). Restarted and drove about 300 feet. Master Warning light, check engine light, brake light and pretty car with ! in the display all came on. Drove home - car ran fine but the hybrid battery seemed to stay full, switched cars, got home the next afternoon, started car again -- all lights still on. Checked gas cap (just in case), brake fluid is between full and low, coolant is probably a little low.

I went to fill up the gas (we were at one bar) and got about $0.30 in before the pump clicked off.
I tried again, and got just about as far.
I tried three different pumps at two stations before deciding the problem was with the car and not the pumps.
Our 2012 prius three is a huge hassle to refuel because the auto shut off on any gas pump is triggered repeatedly regardless of how much fuel is in the car. This happens anywhere I fill up and the only way to get gas in is by slowing the flow to a trickle and restarting the pump each time it shuts off (perhaps 30 times per refueling).
The dealer says it requires a complete replacement of the tank but I'm still not clear on what's causing the problem.
My 2013 Prius fills with approx 10.5 Gallons, but around 9 gallons the gas pump nozzle starts to clicks off every 10 cents. Is this normal?
View 3 RepliesThis has happened to me a couple of times...last night most recently. My gas gauge was flashing so I stopped for gas.
I was only able to pump 3-4 gallons, before the hose shut off and every attempt to continue filling after that would only go a second or two before the hose shut off again.
I was careful I though to allow fumes not to build up since I imagined that might be why the hose was shutting off.
I drove for a few miles and later that night stopped again at the same station and was able to fill up as expected.
