Prius C :: Lower Tires Pressure Can Affect MPG?
Nov 4, 2014
I have a feeling my 2012 C 3 may have low tire pressure. One of the tires looks kind of softer. Is there an indicator that warns when it happens?
How in general do I approach this? For the past few weeks my mpg was low, barely making it into low 40's. So, I wonder if the tire pressure can affect the mpg.

Just had new tire installed and now noticing that the original stem cap was not used. Alarm is not lit, but wondering if I should try to retrieve the original one, since we notified the tire shop that afternoon......or purchase a new one.

I recently replaced the factory Yokohama 195-65-15 on my 2011 Toyota Prius II with a set of Michelin Defender. MPG has dropped to 45 mpg for city driving. With the Yokohamas, I was averaging 49 mpg.

I just bought a used 2008 Prius Touring model and it has Bridgestone Turanza EL400 02 tires. Max pressure says 51 psi.
What do you recommend for tire pressure? I read a lot of posts about 42F/40R. Is that for all tires?

I've fallen hard for the C and I'm wondering how the gas mileage has been compromised by the use of the AC. I realize it's spring everywhere else, but I'm dying to know.

Is there a clear outcome on MPG on whether it increases it or decreases it?

I have found the OE tires are very noisy at lower speeds. They are Michelin Energy. I have Michelin Primacy MXV4 on my 2008 Avalon and they are very quiet. Is there a solution other than replacing them?

Well, after the October snow storm where it took me 6 hours and alot of sliding around to get home, I decided to get all season tires with good snow traction. I picked up the Hankook Optimo H727 and had them installed at Walmart on 11/21/2011. Right away, my MPG dropped significantly.

Started my treg this morning and got the tire pressure warning. Cchecked in convenience setup to see which one had low pressure, and it indicated all four tires were low. Filled tires up and checked pressure again (manually using digital gauge) and they were correct. Started up treg and still got tire pressure warning for all four tires.

How much air pressure should you run on 305/70/16 tires?
I had tires rotated and the shop had them at 35psi. That was just too low and didn't drive well. I have about 42psi right now and they drive better.
I've heard everything from 35-50psi.
What do you run?

So had some new shoes but on the car, but the next day after having them installed the air pressure sensor tripped. Anyway i can somehow reset this without a (sigh) trip to the dealer? By the way, yes, I did check the air pressure levels and they are spot on.

I have read many of the comments re tire pressure loss but don't know if I have a unique problem or not. I own a 2011 GMC Terrain and my tire pressure is monitored through On Star. Every report I receive tells me my pressure is low in all tires - about the same amount, with little variance. Fortunately I own a air compressor and add air - virtually every 10 days or so.The dealer tells me all tires have small pores which cause leaks and I should go to a tire firm to have nitrogen put in the tires. (He didn't say it would seal the tires but indicated it would solve my problem?) Almost all of the comments on your site do not speak favorably of this. Any thoughts?

Last week I had new tires installed on my 18" Samarkands and the TPMS light has been on since. I've verified that all four corners have the metal TPMS sensors in place and the tires are at 40psi, spare is 38psi. I have driven over 100 miles since the tire change. In past the light would come on when pressure below 36psi, and would turn off when tires inflated.
Have this problem after a tire change? Are the sensors easily damaged? Discount Tire/America's Tire Store said to bring the car back so they could take a look, but first wanted to get Vortex input.

I just got 4 new tires installed, running 235-40/18 setup (stock wheels.) On the drive home, the flat tire warning sign came on. I've tried to used the SET button in the glove compartment to deactivate it. That did not work (it flashed one time then stay on).
I check the pressure on all 4 tires and they're all at exactly 40PSI. What the problem could be and how to turn this pos off without going to the dealership?

I am aware that cold weather will decrease your tire pressure, but what is throwing me off is how quickly my rear tires seems to be losing pressure?
I park outside overnight, and it gets down to about 25 degrees F here at night. My front tires I run at about 38-40 PSI, and I JUST filled the rears up on Saturday to the same. I start my car this morning and both my rear tires are sitting at 30 PSI. This has happened ever since the dealer took my my wheels to refinish the rims about a month ago. Is there something they could have done that would be causing this? The can't think of a reason as to why the front tires are fine and the rear keep loosing pressure.

I have had issues with the sensor for my tires staying lit even after filling the tires with air. I had it turned off at the dealership about 6 months ago and it is now constantly on again.

Came out of church this morning to a "Defective Wheel on Board" warning - of course these warnings only happen on weekends or when I am far from home.
From searching the boards and reading the manual, this seems to tell me that I have a tire that is going flat. I checked the air pressure in each of my tires (including the spare). I was down about 2 psi in the right front, but all others were right on. I went to add air to the right front.
I checked the pressures before going out later in the day and they were all still up. While turning in to a parking lot, the "Flat Tyre" warning displayed. I parked the car - nothing looked flat. Checked the pressure in all tires (including the spare) and they were still at the set intervals.
Went to do my shopping and 30 minutes later I was back to the Defective Wheel warning, but not the Flat Tyre warning. Drove home, checked all the pressures - everything still fine.
Just wondering about everyone's experience with this warning. What is the possibility that I have an issue with a monitoring system versus the tire? I bought the Phaeton used at 20k miles and now have 26k total on the odometer.
Does the warning code need reset by a VW tech if I go elsewhere to replace the tires? Although I think given the lack of any apparent issues with the tires, I probably need to take in to the dealer.

On Friday (outside temperature 2 degrees), my TPMS started alarming the usual (CHECK TYRE PRESSURE). So I looked at the display and all four "tyres" had an exclamation point. So I took out my $1 tire pressure gauge and all four tires were 44 psi. After re-setting the TPMS, all is back to normal.
I wonder what happened there?
