Prius C :: Loud Clunk When Braking Less Than 100 Miles

I was having some issues with rattling sounds from my brand new (less than 100 miles) Prius C2--see my thread here.

View 9 RepliesIn my 2004 Comp G I have an extremely loud clunk when braking. The braking clunk does not happen all the time. There is a clunk while having the car in reverse and power braking it. While holding down the brake and revving hard and fast it make the loud clunk every time. It will not do it all the time in drive though. I can not pin point which side it is coming from. It sounds as if it is mostly the right. It almost sounds as if it is coming from inside the trans near the pan area?
I have replaced the lower control arms, sway bar bushings, stab links, struts & mounts, I have solid engine and trans and top mounts, new inner and outer tie rods, all wheel bearings, etc.... (not for this issue, just for performance/wear).
I am torn between thinking it is a cv axle or internal drive train noise.
I just had my front axels replaced. The Cv's were clicking. That problem was fixed.
Metal clunk at initial acceleration and hard braking (none during steering)...
I have a 2010 prius 2;
This morning after starting the car and releasing the brakes I heard loud clunking sound (seemed like a belt ?) Turned the car off. tried it again exact same thing, turned if off .. opened the hood to see if I can tell where this was coming from.. started the car and the clunking came for <1 sec and went away, car drove fine brakes worked fine..
I read something regarding temp changes we have had some change but not a drastic change, and the car was driven over the weekend.
I'm the loudest Prius in CT right now. My brakes doing that loud scraping sound. Is it normal to need brakes this soon?
View 6 RepliesI've been noticing when going in reverse and then braking, when then going forward and braking there is a clunk which seems to come from the front brakes. Is this normal? Shifting of the pads in the caliper?
View 22 RepliesSo I noticed my Treg makes a clunk when I break when backing up. If I hit the gas, then brake, 'clunk'. Sounds like its coming from the rear or undercarriage. Hopefully not serious but its going in for service soon.
View 10 RepliesJust changed the struts, control arms (both used) and sway bar links (new) in front and when braking or accelerating there is a clunk on the right side. Checked the bolt on the control arm and its tight.
View 1 RepliesI get a pop or a clunk from the front drivers side when I brake. It used to happen less often but I took it to the dealer to fix and they lubricated the caliper pins and now it happens frequently. I've read that the Sonata has some issues with the calipers. I would like to repair it and lubing the calipers made it worse.
View 4 RepliesJust today, driving around, and the car makes a clunk when braking. Not when you first start braking, but when it's about to come to a stop. It doesn't do it any other way. Not in reverse, or high-speed panic stops.
The hardest thing is it doesn't happen all the time. I've tried checking for CV clicking, control arms, ball joints, tie rods, all bushings around, motor mounts, you name it. Everything is tight and good.
I've read about some VW's having door pin issues causing the clunk, but it sounds like it comes from the dead center of the car, like right under the e-brake, but I could be wrong.
This problem is recent and only happens when it rains. When braking to a stop, I get a thunk or two. I only having hearing in one ear, so where the sound might be coming from. I ruled out loose things knocking around. The last time I was driving in the ran, I got the thunking only the first one or two times I braked, and then nothing. Other times I have gotten it repeatedly in a single drive. I have never gotten it while braking except when coming to a stop. I don't get it when merely slowing down in traffic or the freeway. I back into my driveway and I am wondering if braking in reverse has any bearing on this problem.
I searched here and on the internet. The problem exists out there as I have described it, but no posts that I can find have identified the problem. The truck has disc fronts and drum rears. I took the front tire off on the drivers side when I re-seated the front wheel bearings. I was going to repack them, but didn't feel like pulling the caliper, so I just re-seated them. I repacked them not that long ago and didn't feel it was worth the trouble at the time. I didn't bother to pull the tire on the passengers side. While I was at it, I greased all the ball joints.
I can't recall exactly when I first started hearing the clunking, if it was before or after the whole U-joint/carrier bearing campaign, but I became acutely aware of it afterwards, perhaps because that's when we got a lot of rain. There is absolutely no driveability issues at all, just the clunk when braking to a stop in the rain.
I have a 2000 Subaru Legacy with just over 215,000 on it. The car runs nice and I just replaced the plugs and wires as well as the transmission fluid. There is just one other clunk and I don't really know what it is. When I brake there is a clunk that sounds like it's coming from the back somewhere near the center of the car. It is a single clunk. It doesn't seem to affect how the car brakes or handles but I want to know what it is.
View 5 RepliesI get an audible 'clunk' whenever I brake while in reverse. The sound reminds me of my old 4X4 when I would back up to take it out of 4 wheel drive. I searched for some existing posts but didn't get the keywords right or they don't exist.
View 21 RepliesI just changed my stabilizer link front right side and it did not solve the single clunk noise that I hear when accelerating and braking.. although it did solve the "multi clunk noises and creaking I get that is now gone away.. but this other single clunk noise what else could it be from it does it when driving straight and there are no clunks when turning. I must add that is that I can hear it and its a low pitched clunk... and is also felt in the steering wheel.
View 2 RepliesMy 2007 GX470 is making a clunk/thud noise when braking (more often when braking hard or on a downhill slope) and then again when I let off the brakes and start to accelerate. It is significant enough that I can feel the car jerk some when it happens, almost as if someone has tapped the back with their car. What it could be?
View 2 RepliesHow to remove the rear seat on the LS460? I need to take it out to have access to the strut tower..need to make sure it's not ripped out/loose bolts or whats not ..still trying to locate the source of that clunk when braking..still...
View 14 RepliesI seem to be having a clunk noise coming from my car when braking to a standstill or accelerating from a standstill.
Its totally unpredictable but only happens when braking or accelerating under 10mph.
No noise when going over bumps or turning and its only heard when the windows are down. What it could be?
Our 2005 Ford Taurus makes a rhythmic clunk from the rear when you slow down. The rhythm seems to slow as you brake. The noise isn't there when you are cruising or accelerating, only when you slow down. We recently drove 2000 miles with a small trailer attached. Could that have anything to do with it?
View 1 RepliesI have recently been hearing a clunking noise coming from the front end of my R while braking lightly to moderately at low speed. What this could be?
View 14 RepliesI've spent several hours over the course of the last week trying to figure out the problem I am having with my 1999 F150. When coming to a stop, there is a heard and felt "clunk" coming from the rear end of my truck. The other day, I had to brake to a stop rapidly and it felt like something had dropped out of the back end of my truck. It's 4WD with a 5.4L V8 with 240k miles. I have a fair amount of knowledge of the truck, having performed all maintenance and most repair, so if I need to check something and report back I should be able to. Also, I've owned the truck since it was new, and this is a recent development.
View 10 RepliesSo my '99 F350 4x4 is making a clunking sound and there is a distinct jolt in the truck while this is occurring.
Symptoms: From a stop while accelerating, there is a distinct jolt and clunk. The best way I can describe the feeling is like something isn't tightened down all the way so there is a split second while inertia is generated and the "looseness" catches up to the acceleration.
When stopping, the clunk and jolt is generated when the truck comes to a complete stop. When the truck rebounds backwards a bit because of the suspension pulls it backwards after stopping, you will hear the clunk again.
I replaced the ball joints a week ago an a wheel hub bearing on the right side. I don't recall this before these repairs, but it may have been making this noise. I was more focused on the grinding from the wheel bearing so I may not have noticed the clunk and jolt then.
Where I should start looking for the problem?
