Experiencing excess wind noise at 60 mph and faster? You would think a vehicle that has a low drag coefficient would not have wind noise issues.

View 9 RepliesRecently I have been doing a lot of highway driving with my 2007 Prius. There is noticeably an excessive amount of wind noise at highway speed due to the gap between the front and back door.
After applying a piece of weather stripping from the hardware store, about $5 the wind noise is greatly reduced.
I'm loving this 'new' 2004 prius with 177k miles on it that i just bought. In New England winters I'm still getting 40-45 mpg and I'm not even trying to get great MPG's.
1.) Wind noise : My biggest disappointment is excessive wind noise over 55 mph. I 'm using this car as a taxi and its so loud inside I'm a little embarrassed with customers in the car. It sounds to me that its coming from the passenger window or passenger side near the windshield, but I can not identify its location at all. I've always been the one driving when looking for it though.
I called a dealer that sells lots of gen II used prius's and he says its fairly common to replace the window seals? The car has a clean car fax.
2.) Mild clunk when the engine kicks on. Not all the time, but sometimes : Other thing is, I can sometimes feel and hear a mild clunk when the engine kicks on. I also feel a little bit if vibration when the engine is on and i'm idling (it was 16 degrees last night so the engine stays on for heat). The oil level is good. I'm due for change in the next 500 miles.
Is this anything I should be concerned about? I'm sure I'm just overly sensitive.
RX Owner- Experiencing excessive wind noise? When I drive above 60 MPH the wind noise is very noticeable. I've owned numerous cars and SUVs in my life and this is the only vehicle were I have to turn up the radio when I exceed 60 MPH.
View 14 RepliesI have intermittent excessive wind noise from the top of my passenger door. The dealer claims they can't hear it, so I will take matters into my own hands. The driver's door was not aligned correctly when I bought the car but the dealer adjusted it correctly, so I am wondering if the passenger door could just be too far outward. Other than adjusting the door striker inward are there any other adjustments or is there a common issue that could cause the wind noise?
View 24 RepliesI'm having a real issue with wind noise coming from the A pillar area. I've been to the dealer twice and still have no resolution yet. When I went in today and showed them where the wind noise is coming from the tech. just stood there dumbfounded like he's never came across this problem before. Tried blaming it on wind noise around the mirror. I showed them how when you close the door on a dollar bill there is hardly and force needed to pull the bill out. They adjusted the door striker the first time which didn't work any. There are some major alignment issues with the door and the seal. It's so bad water leaked inside the car during a heavy rain.
View 1 RepliesI found a fix for excessive wind noise around the mirror and "A" pillar area. There is a gap between the side window and the mirror housing. This gap must be filled to alleviate the problem. An Audi forum suggested rubber tubing to fill the area. I've found a better solution in using adhesive backed wool felt insulation strips. Grainger Supply company sells the strips in 12" lengths. I used the 1/4"W x 3/8"T x 12"L. piece. You have to do some trimming to get the correct fit but it worked great. Clean the area with alcohol before applying.
View 11 RepliesThis is my first summer in my 2010 Prius. Noticed excessive wind on your face when driving with the driver side window down? I'm guessing it might have to do with the shape of the car. I can drive at freeway speeds in my 02 Civic with the window down but if I'm travelling faster than a crawl in the Prius it becomes really annoying.
View 16 RepliesHave excessive cabin wind noise in your Gen 6 when travelling Freeway speeds. I know there would be some noise but when passengers mention it and we talk louder than normal then i think its an issue. It is kinda loud now...
View 2 RepliesI'm looking for a practical , reliable and economical car for work. I drive around 50-70 miles a day in new York city traffic. I'm going to look at a 2000 Toyota echo with 80k on it tomorrow. I need my next car to last me 5-10 years. I have done some research on these cars and I haven't really heard anything bad about them except for excessive road noise and wind vulnerability. Is the echo going to be the right car for my needs? Anything I should know going in to tomorrow?
View 11 RepliesGetting excessive wind noise from the driver side window? specially in the top left corner where the window turns? its bugging the crap out of me and will be taking it to the dealership...
View 14 RepliesFirst off let me say I love my TDi for everything I bought it for...fuel economy, space, ride comfort.
I've noticed the wind noise before but had never taken a drive more than 30 minutes.I just took my first 300 mile road trip and REALLY noticed the EXCESSIVE wind noise.
I traded a 2010 GTI and its weather stripping was more full and produced a much better closed door seal and I never once had problems with wind noise in the 2 years that I owned.
My 2013 Sonata came with a sunroof wind deflector. I'm somewhat hesitant to install it, since it might increase wind noise. It also might affect MPG. I like the looks of it, at least the pics I've seen of it.
View 12 RepliesI have a 2002 Prius. It hasn't been well maintained over the last year and a half, and I had been hearing more and more ambient noise while driving. I thought it was because the tires were wearing out. Well, in the last month I finally got caught up on maintenance (oil change, some new filters, etc.) and got a new set of tires; however, the excessive noise is still there. It becomes noticeable at about 25 mph, and gets louder and higher in pitch as speed increases; there's a noticeable vibration as well from about 45-50 mph.
I don't think it's engine related; the noise happens whether I'm accelerating or just coasting.
I got a used prius 2005 last month. Everything with it is good but the wind noise from the left side of windshield. I tried to tape many place on left, but the noise still. What is the source of the noise?
View 3 RepliesIf I drive at higher speeds (anything above 40mph) I get an unusual wind vibration noise when the roof is fully retracted. If I roll it forward an inch or two it seems fine. Seems like a bit of a design flaw.
View 10 RepliesWe have had our 2010 with 20k miles for about 3 weeks now. I can honestly say that I can't remember being more disappointed in car. Specifically, the road and wind noise above 60 miles an hour can at times be unbearable. The Prius makes the inside of my 14 year old BMW sound like a Lexus.
I thought it might be the tires since the originals were worn. We had an unrepairable leak in one tire so we went ahead and put brand new Michelins on the car. There was only a minor improvement in noise.
So there seems to be an issue with the sunroof already ( 2 weeks since ownership) . In UP/ DOWN mode it will not fully close and causes wind noise. With up down I'm referring to the tilt functionality. I don't get the message sunroof open when leaving vehicle however.
The work around is for me to open the sunroof in the horizontal mode and then close it again to get a proper seal and to eliminate wind noise. In the image you can see that the rear part of the moonroof sits lower than the metal roof....
Read the manual. performed reset. The reset made no difference. So basically to remedy the situation one either must open and close the sunroof or after closing it from tilt mode bump the button to make the moon roof rear part raise and become flush with the roof panel.
For the past year I would occasionally hear a wind noise from the backseat on the passenger's side. It seemed to coincide with acceleration so I figured that a seal had come loose. I took it by the dealership but they couldn't figure out what was wrong. A few days later, I heard the same noise but for the first time ever, it actually got louder when I was stopping so I figured out that it wasn't a seal.
I was lucky enough for the issue to keep going even when I parked so I found out that it was air being forced out from the A/C system(from vent near the seat cushion). What would cause this? I almost might think something wasn't grounded properly. I had another weird issue like this(not air but intermittent) on my old Jeep and it ended up being a grounding issue.
I've owned a 2012 Prius Two for less than a month now, and today while driving home I noticed what sounds like road/wind noise coming from the rear passenger side area. Googling about this revealed information about the battery fan. However, I'm unsure if what I'm hearing is the battery fan or road/wind noise that I just haven't heard before.
Here's information regarding the conditions I was driving in:
- 84 degrees outside temperature
- car had been sitting in an open-air parking lot for about 2 hours
- no tint, no windows cracked for hot air release
- upon returning to the car I turned on the AC to 68, set at mid range speed
- was driving on the interstate doing some stop-and-go, but mostly 50-plus MPH
- windows rolled up completely, no doors ajar
- it sounded like air rushing by
- could not hear anything coming from the left rear side, but my left ear is partially blocked by the headrest, so...
- sound would decrease in volume if car slowed down
- sound would increase in volume as car got faster, but would eventually level out it seemed
- sound would completely go away at speeds below 20ish mph
- sound would not change based on level of AC, whether on, low, high or off
- checked battery vent for obstructions/debris, saw nothing, and was cool to the touch
- car has about 28k miles on it, replaced rear tires yesterday but all bolts, caps, etc. are securely in place
After 3 years and couple months my red prius in faithful service, i finally got by the wind noise everyone is talking about...
At first, I suspected the license plate frame was the issue and also checking around the front end to see if there's are anything that stuck in the bumper gap, wheel wall, and underneath the car but the noise still there.
Finally today...I do actually found it...I tested by either removing or putting on a new 3M tape over one of the screw hole underneath the door site mirror. Over time, some will peel off or break losses and the "gap" is the source for the high pitch noise when you driving fast enough on a road. Mine happen at around 55mph.
Ever since I remove the sticker, the noise gone. One thing I'm not sure why there are factory stickers there. But I decided to remove it because I saw water inside the 3m tape after raining.
