Prius (2010-12) :: When Should Gas Engine Start
Jul 24, 2015
I am a new Prius owner. I have a 2014 model. When I leave the house the gas engine starts before I get out of the drive way. This is not normal is it.

View 19 RepliesI feel that Bob's thread on the frequency of rough engine starts needs a companion poll; whether it's caused by a warm-up cycle that was cut short or not. It seems to me like this is what is most often fingered as the culprit of the rough engine starts, but feel free to post other theories below.
Same rules as his, for ease: ZVW30, 2010 Prius owners only.
Sometimes I have to park my car two blocks away in the afternoon, and later in the evening i need to park my car back to the spots in front of my apartment.
EV mode won't be enough to last the two blocks, even at 7 bars. Or sometimes the car won't let me turn on EV mode, even at 7 bars (battery too cold).
So the engine must run if i want to park my car back near my apartment. But the two block distance will not suffice to completely warm up the engine
So the next morning... (20~ Fahrenheit)
My car knocks for a few seconds the next morning the car starts up...
What is the definition of completing the warm up cycle? 120F? My car will turn off the engine after coolant temp reaches 120F (ECO mode).
At 13,000 miles I've experienced the "rough start". Pulled it out of the garage to wash and wax it. I tried to put it in EV Mode but it wouldn't because the traction battery was down to only 3 bars, I assume. The engine only ran for 4-5 seconds than I shut it off, washed it and waxed it. Left it outside, temperature was about 55 degrees. When I went to start it about 2 hours later to run an errand it felt like the engine was down a cylinder and I shut it off immediately. I waited a minute and it restarted just fine. After reading the threads about the "rough start" I believe it happened because I didn't let it run through all the necessary cycles during the prior start up.
View 7 RepliesI had my car shipped (probably 8 days without being driven) and it has a flashing P when they try to start it, and the engine doesn't come on. Nothing happens if they try to shift to D but they say they can get it into Neutral and then roll the car.
View 4 RepliesMy Prius is having a problem during cold start. When I bought it, the cold start was very energetic with a high rev tone then gradually regulate to a normal pace and petrol engine shuts down. But about 4 months I noticed the tone of the cold start has changed, it starts with a weak and low engine rev and delays to turn off the engine. Today it took about 10 mins to power off the engine. Got 2 months I changed my 12V battery (Bosch now), thought that these symptoms was to notify that battery is failing. But the problem is persistent despite I put new battery..
View 7 RepliesI've been recently having the engine rattle/knock noise occasionally when I start the car. After my first oil change, I mentioned this to the dealer and demonstrated this to them while they documented the issue. I left my car at the dealership for investigation.
The following day, my dealer said they called Toyota and created a case about this. Toyota responded saying they heard about this and the possible root cause is the Motor Mounts on the Prius. They will be sending parts (date is still unknown) to fix the issue.
I specifically asked if there is any damage to the engine and they said absolutely not and there is nothing wrong internally with the car. This also makes kinda sense because if I press the accelerator to the ground when it starts up, the knock doesn't appear. It also works if I put the car into D and drive away.

Been having a problem starting the car (2010 T Spirit - 25k mileage RSH) in the mornings for about 3 weeks. When you power on, the dashboard lights up most options and the power light goes amber with no engine start.
This can take 5 or 6 attempts before getting the engine to start and then half the dashboard like the clock etc will not light up for that journey. Subsequent journeys that day are ok but the issue returns for the first start every day.
I am wondering how does the jump start works on the Prius since it uses a electric motor to start the engine but not a conventional starter.I recently drained the 12V battery (left the interior lights on for two days) and had to take the battery out from the trunk to recharge it. Initially, I tried to jump start it at the specific jump port at the front of the car but it didn't have any effect at all. By that, I mean as if there was no external power source given to the Prius - i.e., no lights came on and no response when pressing the Start button.
I mean zero electric current at the Prius. Is the electronic starter motor power driven by the hybrid battery? If that is the case, it may explain why jump start didn't work in my case because it only passes the power to the 12V battery which doesn't drive the electric starter motor. So what good is the jump start for if it doesn't work like a conventional car? How this process works on Prius?
I bought a new 2013 Toyota Prius Three. It has 23K mile on it now. I have noticed a weird noise with vibration from engine when I start the car for the first time in the morning. The first 10 or 15 seconds after it is on, there is no problem as soon as the engine wants to turn on (engage) I hear the noise. There is no engine light or triangle alarm on. What is going on?
View 7 RepliesSo I had 1st rough cold start today on 2010 Prius with 72K. Wasn't too cold low 40s. The fix was to shut it down and then turn on again.
Engine sounded like it was working on 3 cylinders. It is probably ignition or perhaps valve train issue.. with ignition being prime suspect. If it happens again I'll pull and check plugs.
I've had my 2010 Prius for about 3.5 years now and this is the 3rd maybe 4th time happening. This morning I started the car and the car started to vibrate/rattle from the engine bay. It almost sounded like the wheel of fortune being spun but louder.
View 5 RepliesI went to the workshop of Toyota in Iraq to repair the car. But do not have engineers repairing Prius cars. And they examine the device to detect faults only... These numbers faults
(P0A0F)Engine failed to start.
(P261C)water pump.
Is this a bug? I hit the start button, everything comes on, put on my seatbelt, etc... then I shift into reverse (out of park) and it says I must start in park. But it's already started. I then have to hit the start button to turn everything off, then hit it again to turn anything on. How to avoid this?
View 12 RepliesStarted my 2010 gen 3 Prius 3 the other day and got a bunch of what I thought was engine clatter and the check engine light came on.
The next time I started it, no noise. Anyways brought it to dealer and they diagnosed it and ordered a new manifold.
The next day when the part arrived, I brought in the car. Talked to the mechanic, a great guy, and he explained what happened. Apparently, the clatter is actually the springs rattling in the clutch mechanism of the starter motor/electric motor and not the valves like I thought.
I went to my garage today and went to open the door... it didn't beep and unlock... let's try again...same results.
View 6 RepliesRecently there has been a series of problems popping up with the Prius. Its a 2003 model year.
- About four nights ago the warning icon and check engine light (picture below) popped up upon engine start-up and i noticed a weird idle. It seemed to idle rough. After about 20 seconds of idling the engine would shut off. After about 10 minutes and 6 or 7 attempts to restart the engine the warning lights disappeared and idle seemed to be restored.
- The afternoon after that the same warning icon and check engine light popped up along with the rough idle. After about 10 minutes and 6 or 7 attempts to restart the engine the warning lights disappeared and idle seemed to be restored.
- After this incident it seems like the vehicle is getting bad gas mileage. The picture below shows me getting an average of 25mpg. I was driving very conservatively. Driving the same way i usually do, i usually get 45-50mpg. The vehicle seems to be charging the battery more than usual.
My 4 month old Prius 2010 is not starting since this morning. My wife drives the Prius and when she tried to start it this morning, it would not start. The MFD lights up and all the symbols stay lighted rather than turning off. My wife tried it 5-6 times, but to no avail. She tried to start the car this afternoon and the same problem. I only had this car for 4 months and i cannot understand what is happening. To be clear, my wife drives this car regularly to take my son to school and various other activities. This is the first time that we have this issue and i was just wondering if the 12v battery is the issue.
View 19 RepliesI have a 2010. For the first 25,000 miles, I have been using one of the keyfobs. Today I got into the car, put my foot on the brake as I normally do, and then pressed start button. Nothing happened and I got a message that I had to hold the key up the start button. So I pushed the button on the key fob to release the key. Nothing happened. I tried various positions on the button, but couldn't get anything to happen. Finally, I had to get someone to take me home so that I could get the other keyfob. I admit that I do not have good manual dexterity. I would be grateful if any of you could explain to me how to release the key from the fob.

Got home from driving. Then 15 minutes later went out to the car to head out again. Car would not start or recognize key fob. One of the two.
Headed back to my computer and researched how to charge key fob. Went back into car, pressed down brake and held key up to start button. Have done a lot of variations of this. The light with the key and car on it was flashing periodically.
Got new battery entirely for fob, installed and still could not start car. Tried the key charging again. Still nothing. At one point I was able to turn the radio on but the display did not come on for the car itself, just the radio and sound.
