I have had my 2010 Prius for 6 months and have noticed that when I'm braking over an uneven surface my car seems to speed up. It's a very uncomfortable feeling. Is this a characteristic of regen braking or is there something wrong?
View 10 RepliesI just did my brakes and now I have this squeaking noise when going over speed bump or on uneven surface at low speed. I figure that the springs was decompressed when the car was jacked up and it would settle back down when the car was lower back down. Its has been over a week now and the noise is still there.
By the way, I replaced with Hawk ceramic brakes and it's great. No NOISE and NO brake DUST.
I've had my 2010 Prius II for less than a month and am not particularly happy with it. I've experienced a slight surge forward when braking on uneven pavement at low speeds at least 4-5 times in 900 miles. This isn't something I can duplicate on demand. When I took it in to the dealer after the first time and asked if the ABS fix had been made to it, they told me my car wasn't part of the "campaign" (aka recall) because it was manufactured in March and the ABS problem had been solved by then. However, it sounds exactly like the problem people were discussing in Jan/Feb.
Once when I put it in reverse in a parking lot it lurched backward (my foot was on the brake) suddenly -- not far, but it was an alarming sensation. It also has a high pitched, barely audible whine when moving (can't hear it if I put on the radio). The mechanic said that was the normal sound of the battery, but I don't remember it from other cars I test drove. Is it normal?
I'm keeping an eye on the dome lights every time I park because I found them on one night (they'd probably never shut off after I parked the car during daylight hours) -- it could have been that the light was switched to "on" rather than "door," but now I'm paranoid and constantly check to make sure they're off when they're supposed to be, for fear of wearing down that little 12 v battery. Not fun.
What could be the cause of the clanking sound from the rear of my car , i cant identify it if it comes behind the rear seats ( note that i dont have anything on my trunk) or from the rear under suspension, it clanks when i drive on uneven surface but vanishes when im on smooth asphalt surface.
View 1 RepliesI have a 2010 Santa Fe with only 8k on it and the suspension sounds like a 10 year old pickup truck when I drive on any uneven surface under 30mph. I took it to the dealer who said that sounded normal. After going on a test drive with me he said that he did hear something on the passenger front clunking. He replaced the end link on that side and said that they normally wear out at around 15k. He checked the torque on all the other suspension bolts and said that was all he could do. It seems a little bit better, but it still sounds horrible at low speeds. I don't hear the knocking at highway speeds when I hit any bumps. What it can be? It feels like the struts are hoping or crashing over the bumps instead of absorbing them. My 10 year old Ford Explorer drove nicer than this. When I told the tech that my cheapo 2010 Nissan Versa doesn't make this noise when driven on the same roads he said that the Nissan was a much better car than the Hyundai. Did we make a horrible choice buying this thing?
View 41 RepliesAt idle (car is parked, no load on the engine) the engine runs at about 650 RPM. When I tap the gas - it reacts OK. Engine quickly speeds up.
However, when I want to gently, slowly increase the engine speed - say I want to reach 1000 RPM - it will not respond until a moment when it jumps up to 2500 RPM. Then it might decrease a little, but it is almost impossible to set it at 1000 RPM. I even tried to move the gas pedal with my hand.
It is Elantra HD (2009) with stick shift.
The front struts n my 2010 camry se with about 51k on it and it makes a horrible clunk and pop noise when going slowly on uneven roads and over speed bumps. I got out to check the cause and found it to be he top of the strut coming through the strut mount is making the popping sound and seems like it has more than normal movement... does this happen to many? is it a common issue...

When I brake while going over a rough surface, like a manhole cover or rumble strips, it feels as though the brakes let go. It's really disconcerting, but this has never been picked up during an inspection. I will bring it to the Toyota Service department, but am leery of being overcharged for something.

In the same time, I can hear as if there is a piece of metal sheet somewhere in the car vibrated. Is this normal?
View 10 RepliesI have a 2008 toyora prius with 75423mi on it, was purchased with 70000mi two or three months ago. I have had no problems with this vehicle until recently. Being a prius newbie, I decided to ask here. When sitting parked on a slight slope earlier with the car running, radio running, and phone plugged in for an extended amount of time, I received an error on my display stating smething along the lines of "there is an abnormality with the p transmission mechanism, please part the car on a flat surface and engage the parking break completely" paired with a red triangle on the dash. I immediately moved the car to flat ground and engaged the parking break. The car turns one, shifts fine, and acts just as normal as prior. Is there anything I should be worried about? The car is still under toyota warrenty and is due an oil change now. Any clue what the cause of this was and if it will be reoccuring?
View 13 RepliesI just drive my 2011 new Prius class 5 off the lot, and I notice the front driver side or front tire make a lot of noise. Also I turn a low speed I can hear that noise. It sound like a shock noise sometimes and it sound like tire driving on bad surface noise. Pretty much I can hear it all the time the noise is very annoying because my wheel, tire, car is brand new with 49 miles.
I'm asking Prius owner with 17 alloy wheel, do you have the same problem? Or the 15 inch wheel? I test drive the 15 and it was sort of bad but the 17 alloy make a lot of noise. I being to dealer they say it normal because of the big wheel and small tire. The bs to me, on the phone they say they will give me a same car to compare but when I got there there no Model for me to drive.
Just bought a 2010 Hertz GenIII w/44,000mi. Wife had trouble starting it twice with weird messages like place car on flat surface to orange triangle. I hear it may be a weak battery???
View 3 RepliesUneven throttle response during cold weather engine warm-up? When sub freezing weather arrived a few weeks ago my 2010 Prius developed uneven acceleration during engine warm-up. The car was purchased in October and it ha less than 3,000 miles.
Gradual depression of the accelerator results in a very small, tiny in fact, amount of increasing power to the wheels, not in proportion to the usual smooth and responsive amount of cold starts above freezing temperatures.
Continued depression leads to a point about halfway to the floor when the engine, which of course has been running all along, suddenly surges and the car takes off with a jolt of power. Not smooth, impossible to control well and unacceptable. Many would say this is unsafe.
My 2005 Prius never had, and my wife's 2007 does not have this issue. Could be a cold weather related accelerator defect as with the Camrys, but this is not mechanical sticking as was the case with the Camrys, its an electronics error like a faulty sensor or cold start injector.

None of which have solved a vibration issue thus far. Strut feels solid and the corner push test had the car settle out in less than 2 bounces.
If car has sat a while the driver front (where the issue lies) feels like a imbalanced tire/bent rim (rotated the wheels just to be sure it didn't follow the wheel/tire) or like a broken belt. The tires are almost brand new and only put them on because I was trying to eliminate the point of issue.
When braking, a light touch to the brake pedal makes a almost light clank sound (like weight shift is causing the clank or perhaps a sign of a bad caliper (although pad wear looks even but didn't have rotors rechecked but even with brand new rotors it was there so I don't feel it's a warped rotor plus the vibration is there even when not applying the brakes.
There is only one control arm and the bushing didn't look cracked beyond the normal surface cracking I have seen on most rubber bushing. The upper support is from the strut so perhaps a bad strut or maybe strut support/cap/bearing?
At a total loss as the local garages cannot find anything wrong. My thought was a bad wheel bearing, although there is not any grinding sound that you typically hear when a hub is going bad.
Could also be the CV Joint but not sure how to tell if that really issue the issue unless I replace all the other parts first (hub, caliper, strut/support/bearing).
Have noticed a thumping noise when braking at a Low speed on my 2013 RX 350. Brought it to the attention of my Lexus service mgr at the 5000 mile service. He did a test ride and heard the same thumping sound. He then test drove another 2013 RX at the dealership which made the same noise.
View 14 RepliesI'm battling an odd suspension issue...over the last 5-7,000 miles, I've had a strange vibration issue surface that has varied in intensity depending on speed and road surface. I've had a damaged wheel trued, replaced all four tires and had all four wheels/tires RFV balanced. The vibration has changed but not quite gone away. Instead, it's been joined by an increased vagueness in directional stability (tendency to wander) at highway speed.
Last week, the tech balancing my tires said he felt my right hand front rear control arm bushing was worn. The more I've thought about this, the more I'm wondering if this is what might be the source of this mystery vibration issue. So, I really have two questions?
First, bad front CA rear bushing replaced under warranty? 15,000 miles does NOT seem like an acceptable service life for a suspension bushing? Do these bushings have a history of premature wear and failure, or am I just lucky?
Second, if I do have to replace one or both bushings (left and right pt. no. 5C407183A,) I'd like to ask if the solid bushing (pt. no. 1J0407181) from a Jetta or Beetle will work in a Passat control arm? If I do have to replace the bushing, it might be better to put a more solid piece of rubber in there instead of the flimsier original part.
Bought my Prius (2005, with 160K miles) about a month ago and since I've had it I am hearing a metal on metal grinding noise when braking at low speed. How loud the sound is depends on how hard I am on pushing on the brakes. One of my co-workers has the same model and said that his does not make that sound. Not sure if its just because it has after-market brake pads or something? This noise only occurs when braking at low speeds (below 10 MPH) so I assume its an issue with the front brakes.
Is this something I need to get looked at by the dealership? I had a local mechanic that worked on my old Honda beater take a look and he said that the rotors and brake pads looked new and wasn't sure why they'd make noise.
Ever since I had my Prius in the dealership for the most recent brake recall I noticed a noise (which is hard to describe, something like a muffled clicking) when turning and braking at low speed. If I let my foot off the brake the noise seems to go away. This seems to be happening on both left and right turns.

My 2007 Prius brakes extremely hard at low speed (while I am applying the same amount of pressure). While decelerating, I let the regen braking do most of the work until I get to about 10mph, then I press the brake so I will have equal pressure until I stop. When I get to about 5mph I feel almost a lunge where the brakes aren't working as hard and then the brakes take hold extremely hard. My prius has been doing this for awhile not depending on the weather, but I finally noticed it worse than normal yesterday when it was raining and my car braked hard and actually skid and the traction control light came on.
View 19 RepliesI have determined that I most likely have a bad CV joint - a faint clicking sound while braking that varies with speed that happens with the car in drive, but not in neutral.
I've also found instructions here on how to remove/replace the axle, but I'm wondering if it can be done without separating the tie rod end and removing the ball joint. On other cars I've managed to do this by unbolting the strut, which allowed the hub assembly to flop out enough to be able to slide the axle out of it. Is this possible on the Prius? I have to replace my struts anyway so I was hoping to do it all at once and avoid dealing with potentially frozen suspension components.
