Prius (2010-12) :: Tiny Steering Corrections When Get Up To About 70 MPH
Jun 3, 2016
I have had my 2010 trim two for about a year and have noticed something about it. When I get up to about 70 MPH on the interstate I am constantly having to make tiny steering corrections. On most cars I've had I could let go of the steering wheel and unless there was a curve the car would go straight. I don't know if there is something mechanical wrong, it is the wind shear, or all in my head. All I know is that I'm an old man, and it stresses me out to get above 65 in this car. If it is that way with all pri's are the Gen 4's any better.

I've had light steering issues at speeds above 60 MPH on smooth roads where my Civic FWD 1999 ( 230K miles) feels darty, dangerous and unpredictable when I put in the slightest steering corrections to keep my car going straight. One possible cause, i assumed, could be my front alignment. I'm lowered on lowering springs but never had this darty feeling before.
Inner tie rod boots have been torn for awhile but there is no play left right top bottom with each wheel so I assume they're still fine. Rack could also be worn out. It's been 7 years since my last alignment.
First, I measured my front toe using the string method. Aligned the string to the rear wheel front and rear to keep it parallel, inches away then measured the front. These are the readings from the left and right tire.
Left tire/Front- 9" 3/8
Left tire/Rear - 9" 5/8
Right tire/Front 10" 1/4
Right tire/Rear 10" 3/16
Difference b/w L and R = +5/16th inch toe out.
To confirm, I used another method by choosing a tread line on my left and right tire that are identical and using a 2x4 to keep my tape level measure and taking a reading on each tire.
Distance b/w L and R in front= 62" 1/4
Distance b/w L and R in rear = 62"
1/4th inch toe out in front
So I know I have slightly toe out by a little over a 1/4th inch. Could this cause darty and light steering? And why is my left front farther away from the center of my car then the right front (using the first method above?)

I have a 2001 Ford Excursion. I had all 4 ball joints replaced and now I am experiencing poor steering and drivability. While driving in town and on the freeway I am constantly having to correct the steering. The car wants to dart to the right and then dart to the left. It will not drive straight for very long. Constant steering correction is very tiring, especially on long trips. Need to understand what is happening to my vehicle. What can I do to remedy the problem? The steering was not near as bad before the ball joint replacement.

When the sun is fairly low but bright on the horizon and in front of the windshield there are thousands of tiny specks visible in the windshield that are fairly evenly distributed. They are very small and almost look metallic and appear to be within the safety glass laminate. It is very annoying even when using the sun visor and restricts visibility noticeably.
We have the same thing with our 2006 Prius with approx 80,000 miles and our 2010 Prius has about 30,000 miles. At first I thought it might be some pitting on the surface of the windshield due to road or dust debris but the glass appears to be perfectly smooth. No matter how well I clean the windshield these small specks still appear. I have researched this a bit and have seen quite a few reports from others with this phenomenon especially with GM and BMW vehicles even with new vehicles or new windshields. The most likely thing I have found so far is that it is caused by a metal flake put between the glass lamination to reduce glare.

We often let our 2 year old daughter sit in the drivers seat, and today she took a quarter and found a tiny slot at the very top of the steering wheel horn piece and slipped it in. needless to say there is a quarter inside now and it is driving me insane.

This seems like a trivial issue, but it's driving me crazy. A day after driving my new Accent SE off the lot, I put the seats down to move the family Christmas tree back into storage.
When I returned the seats to their upright position, an annoying squeak replaced the silence of the car. Every tiny bump triggers the squeak.
When I put the rear passenger side seat flat, the squeak stops, so I know it's somewhere in that area.
What kind of lubricant do you recommend for hinges and latches? White lithium grease? Should it be the paste variety or spray?
Any similar squeak in their 3-door Accent? I searched HMA Service, but no relevant topics came up.

I figure out it is because of my coolant pump; however, I hit a huge pothole about a month ago during the morning time, and the entire car lost power. I was assuming it just rattled something, but then the other day after I was driving for about 2 hours, I hit a tiny hole and the car lost power.
However, when the car lost power, it started making this weird rubbing noise as if the timing belt had went off track or something. I'm not sure if that's even possible, but I pulled over, turned the car off, and turned the car back on. Everything was fine after that and I continued to drive for a few more hours.
I do not think the transaxle fluid was ever changed at the 60k interval and I just hit 100k two nights ago. I decided I'm not going to Uber anymore until I get this all taken care of. I need this car to last as long as possible, and I am definitely worried about the ATF or whatever because it's 40k past when it's supposed to be changed.

I noticed at 6000 miles our prius steering is hard to keep on center and seems to go L or R rather than straight. I run 38 psi but have tried 36 and didn't notice any diff. Tires are wearing good and dont think its alignment..

I just purchased a 2010 Prius III with 47,000 miles on. I love the car except for one thing. it has a vibration I can feel in the steering wheel and seat at around 68-69mph. The dealer says it is normal. I did test drive another 2010 Prius and it did seem to have the same vibration.

I've had my Prius 2012 3rd Gen Pckg 2 for about 1 month and love it. I've noticed that when it is quiet i can here a very light noise when turning the wheel and the power steering motor is working. It's a very faint sound resembling shhhhhh. The sound could just be the normal power steering sound but wanted to confirm.

How do you remove the top steering column cover? This is the plastic piece immediately toward the front of the car from the steering wheel. It covers the steering column and is not part of the steering wheel. Part number is 45286-47040-C0 and the parts breakdown doesn't show any fasteners, it probably has some tabs that need to be released, but where?

Just purchased 2012 prius IV a few days ago. When I am trying to scroll through my preset audio stations (using my steering wheel buttons) while my car is on the navigation screen, sometimes it will not go remain on the appropriate mode.
For example when I select the Mode to either the XM, FM or AM options and use the arrow up or arrow down button on the steering wheel to take me to the next preset for that particular mode, instead of taking me to the next preset station for that mode it will jump to a different mode.

Man one day my steering wheel buttons stopped displaying the hologramthing and my trip and display buttons do not work. The weird thing is all my other buttons work fine just no display on dash when presse. This caused my display to get stuck on the prius picture and the odometer instead of my mpg and trip.

This may be by design but while cleaning my car running my hand w dry cloth over steering wheel I noticed a slight bump. To the left of the Toyota logo. I'm not sure if it's on purpose so if the airbag deploys it breaks away but I just noticed it. it's a 2015 Prius 3. Rather not have the airbag go off while driving.

I have a new 2 week old Prius 4. So far I love it. I've put about 600 miles on it. This past weekend I spent a decent amount of time on the freeway and noticed an issue with my steering. I'm pretty sure it is an alignment issue.
The car tracks straight. When I let go of the wheel the car goes dead straight but...the steering wheel is a bit off center turn slightly to the left. If I hold the wheel and turn the steering wheel right to exactly straight the car will go right. It's like they they aligned the car with the steering wheel slightly off center.

Switch out the Temp up/down buttons on steering wheel ... make them ECO and PWR mode in 3rd gen .... and EV / HV or PWR in Plug-in ??
(leave EV button on dash in regular Prius, not very useful, but place on wheel in PiP)
I say yes, for sure! I'm forgetting about the darn things ... laying to the right of the shifter.
I hear some PiP driver's would really like the EV / drive mode button(s) on the steering wheel. I heard they need to switch to EV and back into HV.
How often adjust temp on steering wheel? Not much here.
