Prius (2010-12) :: Swaying At Stop Light When Wipers On At Full Speed
Mar 17, 2012
I just recently purchase my first 2012 Prius Three and so far it's been great on gas. However, today I had my wipers on full speed because of the rain here in Northern Cali and noticed that my car was swaying at the stop light. At first I thought it might be the wind but when I turn off the wipers the swaying went away. Turned them on full blast and the swaying came back. Is this normal?

Just purchased a 2010 prius III and had a question about the HSI bar. I didn't notice this at first, but when pressing the gas (from a complete stop) the HSI bar lags a second then turns on without a gradual increase. Is this normal? While the car is in motion the HSI bar is smooth and gradual, but starting from a stop it seems there is a lag before the bar "lights up" sometimes past the middle line. I press the gas gently but it doesn't ramp up gradually. Probably just my OCD kicking in.

My 2010 70,000km car has this problem since yesterday. That was after leaving it at car wash, they call to tell me it's not starting. Display message said to press brakes while starting, which I did, yeah I pressed it very hard.
After online look up and phone call with Toyota Lanka, I myself checked brake light switch in pedal, since brake lights were not turning on but switch was fine.
Then Toyota Lanka engineer came to location and started by long pressing start. Replaced brake light fuse, which was burned.
But still this light is on. I think it could be due to hard pressing of brake. But now car works fine apart from the brake hold function. Will display reset work, then how to do that

Our 1999 automatic Rav 4 (157,000 mi) occasionally won't accelerate from a full stop or from a low, in-town speed. You step on the accelerator and the engine just flutters at low rpm, stuttering. If you drop it into neutral and start revving it will eventually "catch" and be fine. Very dangerous when entering roadways. We have a new timing belt, cleaned up throttle plate, new sparks, water pump, oxygen sensor.

When I have it set to 1, 2, or 3 it does not work, but on 4 (full speed), it works fine.
It was working fine until this evening driving home. On top of that, my check engine light turned on in the middle of driving home, which was after I found out that the 1,2,3 weren't working. We did have a big snow storm today, but I don't know how that could affect it. I was also running the fan on 4 this morning while letting my car warm up/shovel.

So i've had the car for what, maybe 16 months now and tonight while the wipers were on s l o w speed, I came to a full stop at a light and the wipers stopped wiping, and then either went into intermittent or rain sensing mode. When I started moving again the wipers starting wiping continuously again. Never knew we had this functionality.
I have to admit I've been a fan of the rain sensing feature and just about never use the low or high speed settings except maybe when it's constantly raining on the freeway. So I guess tonight must have been the first time I've used the low setting while in town and had to make a full stop.

Just this past weekend my wife got her 2010 Golf Highline with the 6-speed tiptronic transmission. Just a quick question about the gas pedal. when it is on "D" it really feels heavy and sluggish when going from full stop to acceleration. the pedal feels so hard and when you step on it feels like its not going at all. but as soon as it goes on 3rd everything seems ok. and then we tried putting it into "S" (sports) mode and everything was really good and quick. but when on this mode you need to be really hard on the gas pedal for it to run smooth. so i guess my question is...is it really like that when driving in the "D" mode??

I am hearing a clicking sound when shifting and perhaps an unrelated but similar click when I am pressing the gas peddle from a stop. Perhaps a CV joint? I'm taking the car in to the dealer (approximately 79,000 km or 48,000 miles) on the 20th to give the car a once over.

Recently a couple issues have started with my car, and I'm wondering if they are known.
1) The footwell lights will sporadically switch to full bright for a few seconds. This is really annoying, especially when driving at night.
2) The wiper speed will occasionally slow down, and I'll have to turn them off and on again to fix them. (note, I mean the actually speed of the swipe, not the delay. on the normal speed, not fast, not intermittent, the wipers will physically slow down).
Both are annoying, and I'm hoping they aren't indicative of a larger problem.

I own a 2010 Ford Focus (compact sedan) and had to purchase a set of new tires. I went to a retail chain store that I've never been to before. The salesman suggests a set of 195/60R15 Trazanos. I drive home on a side street about 5 minutes away. Seems fine. The next morning I enter the expressway and there is a slight curve to right when entering, the car begins to feel like it's sliding almost like on ice (yet it's 75 degrees out). I begin to accelerate, my car begins to sway and slide. It felt like I was fishtailing all over the place. It scared me enough to pull of the expressway.
I immediately go to the place that I purchased them. They look at them and tell me that I should have had "H" rated tires put on it. He says my previous tires had a thicker side wall. So, they put a different set of "higher end" tires (195/60R15 Toyo Extensas) for the same price. I make the guy go out on the expressway with me to test it and it seems ok, but I didn't get to try it on a curve at that point. On my way home, I still feel a slight slide on curves, but not like before. It's windy today, so I will take it back out on the expressway tomorrow. I know nothing about tires, so they could be feeding me a line of b.s. Can it really take up to 500 miles for the tires to be "broken in"? My car drove perfectly fine before I had these tires put on.

Over the past week, my engine has stalled numerous times while sitting at a stop light. I simply turn the key and restart the engine and go on my way... until it happens again. FYI - engine is idling between 500 and 600 rpm. I don't know if it's significant or just normal, but when the engine stalls, the red "battery" icon comes on, but goes away as soon as I restart.
In the past few days, I've also noticed my windshield wipers have been very slow, regardless of what position I put the stalk in. Today, there were no engine stalling incidents. However, this morning the wipers were extremely slow when I tested them. Then, this afternoon, everything worked fine! The engine continued to run fine all day and my wipers seem to be back to normal speed!
Does this sound like typical "low left side battery" gremlins, or perhaps the right side "starter" battery? Is it just coincidence that these two symptoms showed up at the same time and are not related? By the way, I believe the left side battery was replaced by the previous owner a year or two ago.

My father in law has a 2011 Prius -3 - with 135,000 miles on it. He has an interesting issue. The front windshield wipers work on low and medium. When he tries to put them on high, the wipers barely moves. When I drop the stalk back at med or low and it works as if nothing is wrong. I have checked the 30amp fuse and it looks fine. I do not hear any grinding or noise when the wipers are working. I think it could be the motor. However before I go out and purchase the motor, I wanted to make sure there was anything else I could be missing... The dealer wanted 340 for parts and install.. .I know I can do the job myself as I have worked on their other Prius - 2005 with 240,000 miles and counting.

I just bought a 2014 PiP. I'm a tall guy, and sometimes when looking for change in my pocket or my phone I'll extend my leg out while on the brake. When I do so, the traction light comes on. Once I drive away, it goes out.

I have a 2013 GS350 F-Sport. Every so often (maybe once every other week), I'll observe the VSC indicator appear after I slow down to a complete stop, such as at a traffic light. The indicator light remains on while I'm stopped. Once the traffic light turns green and I take my foot from the brake pedal to the accelerator, the car hesitates for a moment, as if trying to figure out how to gain traction, but I then get going, and the VSC light disappears and that's the end of it (usually until it happens again a few days or a couple weeks later). Whenever this happens, the road is flat and dry, so traction should be normal and no problem.
The only other piece of information that might be relevant is that I now believe I can reproduce similar behavior: if I'm at a traffic light, or even just parked, and I simply step down hard on the brake pedal, I observe that the VSC indicator light appears. Perhaps this is simply what is happening in the instances I have observed this when stopping at a traffic light. Still, I don't understand why pressing down on the brake pedal with a little extra pressure when parked would cause the VSC light to appear. Is this normal behavior? Only the VSC light appears in these instances, no other indicators or warnings appear.

I had less than half a tank and went to fill up before a long drive. At the gas station, the pump wouldn't let me put any gas in the tank , it kept clicking stop. I gave up and was going to try again later, however when I turned my car back on, it said I had a full tank all of a sudden.
The gauge on my dashboard isn't going down at the right speed either.

Will I wear out the transmission using the engine brake to slow down faster when coming to a stop at a stop sign or light, then shifting back into D when taking off? Should I just always leave it in D unless I am driving down a steep hill?

I recently had my windshield repaired and since the repair my wipers make a full rotation at each start up. I am starting to notice that the blades are getting beaten up. How I can stop this automatic rotation overtime I start the car?

D (automatic) -> S (manual) : I find it odd... It is not the problem with the display. It does go to '4' always, then I can change to other gears. What could be potential cause? Should I go to the dealership for repair?

I wanted to pass along the results of a brake issue I encountered in my 2010 Prius (15K miles) and report to interested Prius owners how the issue was resolved.
Problem: In the last second (or so) coming to a complete stop I noticed a few light clunk type sounds, like something was loose up front. I never experienced any degradation in the braking performance.

I have a 2010 Prius. In the last few months, the radio has started acting strangely.
Sometimes it will increase I speed when you speed up and slow down when you slow down. And play normally when at a stand still. Sometimes it locks up, you can not change the volume or station. Sometimes it does not work at all. Other times it works just fine.
When I called the dealership, they will only replace the radio and not investigate the issue. Replacement could cost 300-400.

Just had this installed and really like it. Works better than rain sensors in my wife's ES350. I hear a "click" every single time the wipers begin to actuate coming from under the dash. Happens every single wipe which is annoying. No sound when I turn off the rain tracker and let wipers actuate using wiper stalk controls.
