Prius (2010-12) :: Solar / AC Fan Making Screeching Sound
Sep 3, 2015
I'm assuming the blower on my 2012 is most likely starting to fail... Called dealer and its special order at $170... I'm not paying that for a blower.

View 5 RepliesI have a 2010 Prius, solar panels, sunroof, JBL, the works. (I bought it used.)
Whenever I go over a speed bump at an angle, or over rough terrain, there's a big clunk from somewhere above and behind me. But I could never tell exactly where it's coming from. t First I thought it might be something loose in the sunroof, but I don't think so. I made my wife sit in the backseat while I drove over nearby speed bumps, and she kept pointing toward the area of the roof that houses the solar panels. Can they come loose? Or can the roof struts come loose?
Anyway, that leads to -- my mechanic is trying to figure out how much it would cost to get in there and take a look. He seemed to think that removing the headliner means buying a new headliner (i.e. removing it wrecks it.) That gets very expensive.
The clunk is very annoying, sounds like the car is coming apart. Maybe it is!
My car, a 2006 Nissan Teana, is making a screeching sound when i press the gas pedal. This happens only when the car is moving since when i press the pedal when it is stationery, on neutral, no sound comes out.
My mechanic suspected that the engine belt tensioning pulley was the problem. We replaced it but the noise still there.
Initially, it was not loud and one took long to hear it. It is now getting louder.
I am trying to figure out if my solar panel is functioning or not. The manual says that after one minute the air circulation flow control should change and 10 minutes later the ventilation should start, if parked in bright sunshine and if the switch is activated before switching the ignition off.
I parked the car in bright sunshine, no shaddow. The solar panels were clean and unobstructed. I stayed in the car to see what happens. I had set the air flow control to lower feet only and indoor circulation, so the solar system would need to switch it to outdoor circulation and upper level to work. With the ignition on, I pressed the solar ventilation switch then I switched the ignition off a few seconds later. I waited 1 minute, nothing happened! The ventilation flow routing did not switch to outdoor and there was no noise. I waited 15 minutes and nothing happened (except me starting to sweat a lot!).
Is there a better way to check the solar system function before I go to Toyota to ask them to check it?
2015 prius solar roof does it drain the battery when the sun is not out and the cooling fan is running, not AC?
View 15 RepliesThe other day I was driving a rather long distance and stopped to take a nap inside the car with everything off. The solar ventilation system started to do its magic, but it only seemed to operate in bursts, i.e. no air flow, 20 seconds delay, slowly increasing airflow to what seems like a max flow for about 5-10 seconds, then no flow at all again for maybe a minute or so. It seemed odd, and not very efficient at all as opposed to just keep the fans going (in plain sun that shouldn't be a problem).
View 12 RepliesNew owner of a GX 460. Noticed that when driving in the parking garage and turning around the corners, the wheels make screeching noise. the GX 460 is not a very big SUV but it feels like i'm driving a huge truck when trying to turn.
And also need confirmation that during normal driving, the central differential should be disconnected, which means a yellow icon showing on the dial, i.e., a yellow icon that shows a cross in between the four wheels.
The past few days ive had the switch in the on position but when I exit the car and come back hours later after it's been in full sun the fan isn't on and the cabin isn't lower in temp. Occasionally when I shut off the car I hear a short beep and I assume that means the system is active and later I find it is, but that is with the moon roof open. Is it normal for the fan to not turn on unless the roof is open?
View 3 RepliesI have had my prius IV with solar roof for a few weeks and when the roof is open and i go over any bumps or rough roads it rattles and the amount of noise varies depending on the position of the roof.
View 12 RepliesI wonder if having solar panel roof will reduce the life of the battery?
View 5 RepliesOn washing my car recently, during wipe down I discover my solar roof is showing signs of rust inside the glass panels? I don't do anything special to my prius' roof top except for cleaning since its above my height.... anyways should I be concern about this?. 2010 Prius IV ...
View 19 RepliesSee the video, need to figure out this sound. It is currently at the dealership but I don't have much faith in them rectifying the problem : [URL] ....
View 4 RepliesWas about three blocks from home when the front of the car started making a horrific metallic scraping sound as the front wheel turned. I mean LOUD. Did a quick look for something stuck in the wheels somewhere but nothing. It's not like a branch stuck in the wheel sound, but scraping a shovel on a steel beam kind of sound. Braking seems to change the makeup of the sound, but did not stop it. Parked it in the garage.
I pulled the left wheel off, looked and looked, and looked. Nothing. Fear and sadness setting in. Everything looked normal....except....a faint line on the rotor very near the inside edge. Got a mirror and looked some more, and there, wedged on the inside edge of the pad's metal part and the rotor, was a rock the size of a bb. At most. Got a small screwdriver and hammer and popped it out. Done. Sheesh.
Seriously it was so loud it was amazing. So store in file folder for future reference if needed.
The line can be felt barely with a fingernail and is half the width of a pencil lead, and goes under the innermost 1/8" of the pad. I'm thinking do I want the dealer to pull and turn it, or is it going to affect my braking at all. Pretty much gonna leave it be I think.
My F450 2010 class C motor home has the V10 engine. In the RPM range of about 2200 - 2300, there is a screeching sound I believe is from the engine area. It does not matter what transmission gear I'm in thus the vehicle speed is not a factor - only happens in that engine RPM range. Seems to happen when slowly accelerating or decelerating through the 2200 - 2300 RPM range or continues to screech if I maintain that RPM. If I drop back or increase RPM out of the range it quits. If I accelerate thru the range a little quicker it doesn't happen. Also does not happen when parked and the engine is sped up.
View 7 RepliesI decided to go for a stroll and about 10 minutes after heading out, sudden the Brake and ABS lights come on along with a screeching alarm sound from the cabin. I pulled over right away to check for leaks and my brake fluid. There were no leaks and brake fluid was full. I decided to head back home and when I turned the car back on, I lost most of my brake pedal and it became completely spongy and would sink down when depressed. I had to drive home with my emergency lights at about 15 miles per hr in hopes of being able to stop in time. I double checked when I came home, no leaks whatsoever.
View 19 RepliesI have a 2000 Passat V6 with about 75k miles. This week, my car has been making these piercing/whistling noises regardless of whether or not I'm pressing the gas. It usually occurs from 20-50 mph. Above 50 mph, there is no noise. The noise eminates from under the car, mostly on the right hand side. My brakes screech too, but they've been doing that for about 2 months now. And that screeching is a different noise.
View 1 RepliesBy hooking it directly to the battery, putting the solar panel in the sun to keep it fully charged? It's 1.5 watts. 12 volts. It has a built in over charge protection.
View 3 RepliesMy car suddenly make a screeching noise and just died on the road. It sounded like I drove over some garbage thrown on the road, like a cardboard box or something. I have a 2003 Subaru Forester with 147010 miles. I have had it for one and half years. The seller had the transmission job done two years ago. It has a new water pump, spark plugs, tune up. The only thing that is not working is my driver side window. I was going to get it replaced this weekend.
I am not sure what happened. I am up to date on oil change, maintenance, and all the essentials. The car engine seemed slightly loud when I started it this after noon. I went to the grocer store, turned the A/c on and was on my way home. I was driving on the main road and the car stalled. I checked and made sure the fluids are full, Tried to start the car to drive it out of the main road, no luck. The police officer felt that it is a hazard to wait for the toe truck on the main road, hence ordered her tow truck.
The car is in my parking lot now. When i tried to start it, the check engine and the battery lights are on and the engine is making a hell of scratchy noise and the engine seems to be accelerating on its own.
I love my car and do take a good care of.Could not reach the mechanic due to the long weekend. Will tow it to the garage on Tuesday. I want to know what exactly do you think has happened. All I can say is we are going through a heat wave in CT. I park the car outside in the parking lot.
My car - a 2007 4 cylinder Hyundai Sonata - is making loud screeching sound more than occasionally but not all the time at high rates of speed (70 - 75 mph) and ESPECIALLY when I am exiting the highway to go to the train station and I turn to the left on the exit ramp. Never the right - only the left, and it stops immediately when I touch the brakes.
About 6 weeks ago, I had 4 new tires put on, and thought maybe they were not installed properly. I saw a mechanic today who put it up on the lift and said everything looks in good order and he could not find anything wrong with the driver's side front wheel, which is where it sounds like the noise is coming from. Of course, when we drove around in it, there was no noise. In fact, after I dropped him off and went to the train station it DID make the noise, so I turned around, picked him up and drove back exactly the same way - no noise.
It is a very, very loud uninterrupted screeching sound.
I drive a 2010 Nissan Altima and my front tires have been making a kind of roaring sound. More of a "woo-woo-woo-woo" sound. It doesn't get louder the faster I go, but it does make the sound faster when I pick up speed. I used a jack to lift all 4 tires off the ground and shake the wheels, but there was no slack or sound so that would rule out the wheel bearings right? The car doesn't shake or vibrate either and when I let go of the steering wheel, the car stays straight. That would also rule out wheel balance and alignment right?
View 19 RepliesOk, so I leave the fire station this morning headed home and my steering felt weird. About 1/2 mile from home I hit a bump and my drivers side front wheel started making a screeching noise. I stopped and looked out the window and it appeared fine. I limped home and as I pull in the driveway, I lost all my steering. I look under the truck and this is what I found.
Not sure what to do. This is my daily driver and neither of my 2 mechanic friends will answer their phones.
