Prius (2010-12) :: Should Change Oil At 13000 Miles?
Mar 16, 2016
So I posted a while back that my oil at 13000 miles still looks clean at 34k on the Prius . Sent in an oil sample to Blackstone to see what's the break down on the oil. Like I said before I am impress with today synthetic oil and how well Toyota build their motor. Here is the result from blackstone.
Talk to the lab person who analyze the oil. He said he's pretty impressed with Prius motor. He said with the results I can probably go 20k to 25K miles before the next Oil Change look at the result there hardly any breakdown in the oil but their Blackstone wants to analyze the oil at 2000 miles increments.

I wanted to change oil at 1000 miles on my new 2010 FX4. The dealer said that I should wait till 2500 miles or so because it still has the break in oil in it.
Does he know what he is talking about or should I change it? He did say he would change it and take my money if I really wanted to.
Maybe my thinking is still old school about changing the oil right away with a new engine.

How many miles can be driven after the computer tells you have zero miles left to empty? Or rather how many gallons do you think is left in the tank after the computer says you're empty?

Why on a 2016 Prius is there no toggle switch to change from miles to kilometers?

I have a 2013 Prius Wagon. Have noticed that I can go into the General setting and should be able to change from kilometers to miles. Go through all the steps, selecting miles as the new option, and then nothing happens. There is no screen to save settings, so nothing happens.
On the other hand why would those smart apples designing this system just not link to whole process to the button on the dash that changes the speedometer function. Just like it did in my 2005 Malibu!!!

When in the navigation system it shows kilometers and meters. How to change it to miles.

Have a 2014 Prius III. Was getting 50-60 mpg until i took it in for the 5k mile service. Immediately afterwards the mpg dropped to 43-50 mpg. It seems when the car is cold, it will start in EV mode for a few seconds and then the engine will kick in and it will not enter EV mode for the first few miles even with the battery 80% charged, driving under 20 mph, a/c off and keeping the Hybrid system indicator in what should be the EV range.

Have owned this car for 8 days and the wife is driving her normal traps, only shows having used 1/2 tank and over 240 miles, something must be wrong with this thing, must take back to dealer,

I drive about 25 miles each way to and from work. Almost since the day I've purchased the vehicle (6 months), I've learned and used the Pulse and Glide technique daily and I've become very good and comfortable with it. I usually get 65mpg on my way to work and 70+ on my way home.
However in the last couple of days, I've notice a significant drop down to low 50's with no change in my driving habits, route, or tire pressure. Also no work or maintenance has been done to the vehicle. Upon closer investigation, I've noticed that sometimes, well after the warmup stages, when I glide, the ICE stays on and the instant MPG meter only reads 50mpg instead of the infinity mpg it usually does.
It doesn't happen every time I glide, just sometimes. For example this morning after driving the entire 25 miles to work, the ICE stayed on during my last glide of the commute. At first I thought that maybe I didn't let my foot off the accelerated long enough, but further attempts with longer delays resulted the same result of the ICE not shutting off. Should I have the dealer look at the car? Am I missing something?

For the past couple weeks on the way home from work the ICE runs non-stop for 20+ miles. My drive is 25 miles and the weather has been 105+. In the morning everything seems to work fine. In the afternoon even with the AC off, battery almost fully charged the ICE does not shut off at all even at a stop. I even tried putting it in EV mode and it tells me Not Currently Available. My Prius is a 2012 3 with 5500 miles. Is this normal in hot weather or is there something wrong??? Also the mileage sucks, in the morning with the AC on, weather around 90 I get 55-58mpg. In the afternoon I get low 40's even with the AC off.

As odd as it may sound, our Prius salesman told us we should not use the cruise control on our 2010 Prius II for the first 1500 miles. We could not find any such warning in the manual. Did we just misunderstand or was the salesman correct?

The oil consumption started around 90-100k miles. My wife mostly drives the car so I just check it and fill it without keeping track of mileage. Last week I had a lot of driving to do so I topped off the oil before starting my trip and put a 5 qt 5-20w bottle in the back. I've been through two liters in 2100 miles! Sheesh - I'm ticked off. I do my own oil changes at least every 10k miles, always use 0-20w or 5-20w full synthetic oil (usually Mobil 1). I replaced the spark plugs at 119k miles per maintenance schedule.
Besides the oil consumption, since 115k miles the engine can get into a mode where it misses a little bit at low power once it is completely warmed up. I have a good code reader and nothing ever shows up. I expected the new spark plugs would fix it, but they didn't change anything about how it runs. It is slowly getting worse. I'm going to wait until a code in the ECU is set before fixing it. It could be an ignition coil. I suspect it is an O2 sensor which causes the AFR to be too lean which makes the mix hard to ignite. Time will tell. It runs fine when cruising at highway speeds.
We bought this 2010 Prius III, not 3, new in October 2010. The only out-of-the-ordinary thing we do is live in northern Wyoming where it can be very cold for a long time. We drive 85 mph for long distances to go shopping and visit friends. The gas mileage is the same as it has always been. It varies between 42 and 50 mpg in the summer and 35 and 45 in the winter.

Temperature outside (weather data): 55F. Temperature gauge in prius: 57F. It felt more like 70F. It's a 2010 Prius III model that is 6 months old and has about 3942 miles and is driven VERY carefully.
I start the Prius and when the ICE engages to warm up. There's LOUD intense engine knock. I immediately turn the power off. After a couple of seconds, I start it again....the ICE engages again and then starts knocking rapidly (it is definitely knocking) and after 10 seconds. It goes back to normal. It was so intense that it may have damaged other components or the engine block itself.

Will be going for the 5k tire rotation coupon in a couple weeks as I'm at 4700 miles right now (purchased car in August), but the check air filter screen keeps coming up when I switch the navigation. Why that might be? I thought those are usually replaced around 30k miles.

Warning light came on and am wondering if there are others who have had this happen. Had the 15000 mile service just 300 miles ago, car has been in garage for 6 days without use, weather outside in single digits, but garage is 45 degrees. Waiting for tow to dealer.

I made the mistake of lending my car to my sister who drove about 50 miles with the parking brake on.... And yes it beeped at her the whole way and she didn't think anything of it..... What kind of damage could have been done? Brakes seem to work fine although the parking brake barely works now.

I have a 2010 Prius that I bought used this past Fall (2013). I have only had the oil changed once and it was at the local Toyota dealer. The service adviser told me the interval was 10k miles however, the "Oil Maintenance Required" notification is flashing on my dash at only 5k miles since the last change.
Is this a standard preset notification that trips automatically at 5k miles or does the computer measure the quality of the oil and it is telling me that the oil is shot and I need to change it now?!?

The uneven wear occurred again, this time only giving me 22,644 miles on the rear brakes. So, I am on my third set of rear brakes at 78,000 miles.
This time the dealer contacted the district rep since this was a repeat occurrence. It turns out a week after my first rear brake job, Toyota issued T-SB-0248-12, for this very problem, on the 2010 - 2012 Prius and on the 2012 Prius PHV. There is a new brake pad that is supposed to address this problem. The old part number that was put on my car during the first brake job was 04466-76011 and the new part number is 04466-47080. The receipt also shows Brake Shim Grease part number 08887-80409, which is noted in the TSB.
Toyota did the right thing in that they covered the cost of the brake job I just had done. I just opened a case asking to be reimbursed for the first brake job since this turned out to be a problem that was addressed with a new part.
I suggest anyone with a 2010-2012 Prius or 2012 Prius PHV that needs rear brakes, make sure you insist on getting this updated pad and point out this TSB. My service adviser said they were going to replace all of their pads with the old part number with the updated pad, so other customers going forward receive this new pad, though he also said they just don't do a lot of Prius brake jobs.

My Prius is now 4 months old and has just just over 5000 miles on it. The Oil Maintenance message is showing in the display. I was told that oil change intervals were 10,000miles.

I just dropped my 2014 Prius off at the dealer for regular service and they tell me the brake pads are rusted and 'locked up' into the calipers. They want to replace the front brakes. I told them that this sounds like premature wear - especially given the Prius' reputation for brake longevity - my dad had a Camry Hybrid that went 170,000km before he sold it - never having changed the damn brakes. Of course, they are claiming that this is normal wear and tear. Is this normal wear and tear, or is there something wrong with the car? - or worse, is the dealer trying to milk some cash out of me?
