Prius (2010-12) :: Shock Noise Sometimes And It Sound Like Tire Driving On Bad Surface
Nov 14, 2011
I just drive my 2011 new Prius class 5 off the lot, and I notice the front driver side or front tire make a lot of noise. Also I turn a low speed I can hear that noise. It sound like a shock noise sometimes and it sound like tire driving on bad surface noise. Pretty much I can hear it all the time the noise is very annoying because my wheel, tire, car is brand new with 49 miles.
I'm asking Prius owner with 17 alloy wheel, do you have the same problem? Or the 15 inch wheel? I test drive the 15 and it was sort of bad but the 17 alloy make a lot of noise. I being to dealer they say it normal because of the big wheel and small tire. The bs to me, on the phone they say they will give me a same car to compare but when I got there there no Model for me to drive.

My 2012 RX350 now for over a year and like it a lot.........BUT.
There's seems to be a lot "road noise" that's transmitted back into the cabin, like driving over expansion joints on blacktop or rough road surface, is this normal?
I drove a 2000 RX300 for 100,000 miles and don't remember it being this noisy. Interior noise is great and quiet.

I was driving on the freeway(70mph), when a loud pop noise (sound of a blown tire.) Felt like a wheel bearing seized up then felt rough on the road. Got off the freeway and everything looked normal from the outside. No smell/smoke. While driving home on the back roads, i was hearing a rattle from the trunk area.
Lifted the car and noticed a little bit of fluid on the front of the differential. Didn't find any leaks or puddles. Took the fuse out for the haldex, and drove it around, still feels the same but still hear the rattle. Hoping its not the differential but haven't drained any fluid yet.
Ok, well never mind. brake system locked up on me.

I running into a bit of a strange tire problem. I recently had the tires replaced on my 17" wheels. I ordered the tires online and had them installed by a local garage. Ever since then, I have been having what appears to be an intermittent leak from my left front tire. I'd typically fill the tire to 42psi in the morning and, by the next morning, discover it to be around 34-35psi. My commute each day is approximately 100 miles round-trip. This is very repeatable.
I have been back to the mechanic. He removed the wheel and very carefully examined the valve stem, rim-tire bead, sidewalls, and treads for any leaking using the soapy water method. We couldn't find anything.

I have a 2011 Toyota Prius with an oddity in the braking system. When I brake while going over a rough surface, like a manhole cover or rumble strips, it feels as though the brakes let go. It's really disconcerting, but this has never been picked up during an inspection. I will bring it to the Toyota Service department, but am leery of being overcharged for something.

I have had my 2010 Prius for 6 months and have noticed that when I'm braking over an uneven surface my car seems to speed up. It's a very uncomfortable feeling. Is this a characteristic of regen braking or is there something wrong?

I have a 2008 toyora prius with 75423mi on it, was purchased with 70000mi two or three months ago. I have had no problems with this vehicle until recently. Being a prius newbie, I decided to ask here. When sitting parked on a slight slope earlier with the car running, radio running, and phone plugged in for an extended amount of time, I received an error on my display stating smething along the lines of "there is an abnormality with the p transmission mechanism, please part the car on a flat surface and engage the parking break completely" paired with a red triangle on the dash. I immediately moved the car to flat ground and engaged the parking break. The car turns one, shifts fine, and acts just as normal as prior. Is there anything I should be worried about? The car is still under toyota warrenty and is due an oil change now. Any clue what the cause of this was and if it will be reoccuring?

My girlfriend and I just bought a 2011 a few weeks ago. We test drove it a couple times ourselves, and had our mechanic take a look at it and drive it also. Everything looked and sounded good. Not sure how much it matters, but it's a Certified Used as well.
A couple days ago, returning from a 45-minute drive which included some short stretches of gravel road, I noticed an oscillating sound. It's definitely not a noise that was there when we bought the car. Unfortunately, my cell is apparently bad at capturing audio, so hopefully my description will be enough.
The noise is very faint, almost inaudible, at low speeds. Between 30 and 35 mph it gets much louder, peaking at about 33. There's some vibration through the accelerator pedal also. Above 35, it fades pretty quickly and I can't really hear it at 50. The sound itself is 3 beats on, 1 beat off, about every second. There's a slight difference in pitch between each beat.
If that isn't enough to go on, let me know and I'll give the recording another shot and upload it if the noise is audible.

Every time I get out on the driver side and close the door I get a big shock. It's strong enough to make me scared to touch the door. Now I close the door by pushing on the window. How to fix it?

So at 19+K I notice the car has tire noise and shakes. Take car in for 20000 mile service and the dealer tells me I have cupped tires. They say the car must be out of alignment to get cupped tires. I think not because the car goes straight down the road. They have nothing to offer in regards to getting new tires free or adjustment on new. I should have pushed hard for a resolution to the problem right then and there but did not. I rack up miles fast so I put up with the problem and at 37000 have the dealer put on new tires and check the alignment. Alignment was in specs but not to complete center. So I have them align the car.
On the way home I notice I still have a shake, felt in the floor and the passenger side head rest shakes back and forth. They rebalance the tires and tell me all fixed. I drive off only to feel the same shake.
I go back and insist on talking with the service manager. Take him for a ride and he can't feel the problem and says all he feels is the normal Prius road roughness. He says if I leave the car they will check it out further the next day. I tell him maybe the reason my first set of tires went bad is due to the shake. Look further than the tires! Next day when I pick up the car they tell me they road forced balance the tires and let air out of the tires to soften the ride.
Of course the car still shakes. I take the car to a different dealer and tell them I need the car completely checked out and not to focus just on the tires. They tell me the tires where way under inflated and out of balance, one even by one and a half ounce. They tell me all is fine. I drive off and still it shakes. Go back and take the tech for a ride. He can't feel the problem.
So got a shake in the floor that is best felt at between 65 -72 miles per hour? How do I correct this? If this is normal for a Prius why did I not feel it for the first 19000 miles? I say it must be drive train related but I can't seem to get people to not focus on the tires. Car is 15 months old and I closing in on 40,000.

A few nights ago while driving my 2010 Prius III on the highway I suddenly heard a whistling sound, as if my window was cracked open. It was not, and I guessed that there was some other piece of the car that had come loose (similar to a previous incident with my splash guard under the bumper and I just popped it back into place and re-secured the pin).

I have purchased a 2010 III Prius with 73K miles last week after my 2006, everything is fine for me but I have a scary problem , the engine sound is very high while driving even after enough warming up, specially when the ECO meter reaches the PWR area or when accelerating hardly, I tried changing the engine oil with synthetic 0W-20 and the filter and the sound still the same.
Check the video attached and also note that
- Its winter here and temp is 50F.
- The car was imported from the US,
- The speed in the video in KM/h.
- I am using clean OCTANE 95 fuel.
- The video was after driving 20 Miles.
- I have latest version of Techstream with original Mongoose MFC...

2010 Prius making knocking sounds. Not exactly the "death rattle" that sometimes happens when you first start the car.
* While driving, the sound reminds me of the Raptors in Jurassic World.
See example videos:
Knocking at idle (Knocking Noise starts at ~19 seconds into the video):
==========================================================
Knocking while driving: (Good examples at ~24 seconds into the video):
==========================================================
Knocking while driving with Torque OBD2 Monitors: (Noticeable example starts at ~28 seconds into the video):
=======================================================================================
The car has over 300K miles and the problem started a few months back. At first the sound only occurred while driving under certain load conditions.
The problem would occur at intermittent times. Normally at low speeds with heavy loads (going up hill with low to medium acceleration). Also occurring for a short time when letting off the accelerator. Never occurring at moderate to heavy acceleration. Never at idle. Recently the shaking / raptor noise started to occur while idling.
* This problem is now easily created at idle each and every time the HV battery drops below 2 bars and requires charging. The engine change is immediate and starts and stops in sync with the extra load of the HV battery charge cycle.
Placing the car in the maintenance mode, the car will start and idle normally then immediately start and stop the knocking when it switches from HV charging to non-charging mode. There are no Check Engine light. Things I've done to troubleshoot the problem:
* Swapped the following parts with another working 2010 Prius.
** Coils and spark plugs
** VVT solenoid
** Cam Sensor
** EGR Valve Control
** Fuel Injectors
** MAF Sensor
** MAP Sensor
** Evap Control Valve
* Cleaned the intake manifold (It was full of carbon)
(This was done about a month before this problem started to intermittently appear). Prior to cleaning the intake manifold the car was shaking and misfiring under certain high torque condition and generating a P0304 check engine code). Once I cleaned the intake manifold the problem was fixed. I had no more check engine incidences and the shake was gone.

The right tire/wheel is making the squeaking sound when driving. The sound stops when brakes are applied. The sound comes only few times and not all the times. It does not sound when driving on highways.

2012 Prius V w/24k miles. Have experienced a noise while driving. (best I can describe it is like when moving a straw up and down through the lid on a styrofoam cup). It is intermittent. Have discussed this with the dealer service department at least three times. One tech drove with me said he found a bad front strut which was replaced. It took some time but noise returned. I can hear it when others can't and can feel it through the floor board. It may be muted but also so loud my wife says it sounds like something is going to fall off. Does it at slow speeds across parking lots on smooth surfaces or on road on smooth and rough surfaces in any kind of weather conditions. Will be taking it in for 25k service soon but what to look for.

Last week , I changed the front wheels brake pads and had the mechanic rotating the wheels ( putting the front back and vise versa ). Ever since I had this oscillating noise and vibration when driving at 30-40 km/ hour (20-25 mph) when I speed up the noise change into a high roar without vibration . My prius is V gen 3 model 2010.

Just got recently used prius 2010 and noticing low humming noise while driving.. every couple of minutes at slow speeds.. not sure how it is at higher speeds. Sounds that noise coming from somewhere front.. and remind like air conditioner in older car moving some parts when you switch from hot to cold . is that normal? sounds happen when ac is on and off.
