View 3 RepliesThe timing belt on my 2004 Chevy Aveo broke last week. I have it at a mechanic who got a new timing belt on to check the compression of the engine. Bad news: no compression. So far they haven't taken the head off to inspect the inside. This includes timing belt/water pump, cylinder head gasket removal and replacement, cylinder head check, some misc labor, lube, oil, and filter...
However, another mechanic is suggesting that I replace the engine instead with a used or refurbished engine with less miles. He says that it doesn't make much sense to put new parts on the top end of the engine. The engine itself has about 153k miles on it.
92 Jeep Cherokee 4wd, 4.0 motor, automatic. Several things have been done recently, new timing chain, coil, distributor and cap, map sensor, computer, cam shaft timing sensor. motor now will start and run. It runs well at idle, but the timing gets all out of whack as the RPM's increase. Is there a knock sensor on this motor, and could it cause this? If so, where is it located?
View 1 RepliesI have a 1982 Ford Granada with a 3.8L V6 engine. It has an old-fashioned distributor with a cap, rotor and vacuum advance mechanism. I can’t seem to find any provision for loosening and rotating the distributor in order to adjust the ignition timing. Nor can I find a timing scale alongside the crankshaft pulley. Can the ignition timing be manually adjusted in this engine? Or, is it computer-controlled like the modern vehicles?
View 8 Replies2005 6.0 SuperDuty ... I was driving my truck on the freeway, no issues. Started hearing a very faint ticking sound, then the engine died. Pulled off to the side. tried to start it, and it turned over very rapidly, with no compression. I'm thinking "Timing Gear".
Had it towed to a Ford dealership near the incident. I told them what i thought it may be, and the mechanic thought it "May be possible". not very confidently....
I authorized them to remove the engine, and look. Sure enough, the gears were toast. This is the difficult part.
The service manager is a young kid, (I can tell from talking to him a hundred times on the phone), and is telling me "My Cam(s) are ruined, and the valves are bent, because the metal from the gears went through the motor. I told him to stop. put the truck outside, and wait. So, I have a couple of questions. other than i don't have Cam(s).
1. Is the 6.0 a clearance type motor? (will the valves impact the pistons, if the timing gears fail).
2. Will the metal from the timing gears get into the motor, or fall into the oil pan?
There were no loud noises, when the engine died. I had the engine bullet proofed at 101,000 miles, it now has 250,000. The truck is still solid, so worth fixing?
What kind of mpg increase one would see if they were to increase the tire pressures from recommended (35 F/33 R psi) to max (44 F/ 42 R). Any stats of tracked?
View 1 RepliesOnce in awhile, as in maybe once a month or every few thousand miles, I hear a rattling noise in the rear below the car. It is very audible and everyone in the car notice it.
This happen only when I have been in traffic for awhile during which:
1) when battery is running really low from moving at low speed
2) After which the engine is turned on to charge the battery
3) moving low speed with the engine running.
The vibrating noise increases as my speed increase, getting more audible and vibrating faster. After a certain point (maybe 30 mph) the noise stopped.
I wanted to know that at the moment my prius does not automatically locks the doors when reaching above 20km/hr as its suppose to.
I went through the manual and tried to turn the power button on and pushing the gear in N and pressing the lock button but it didn't work.
I have a 3rd gen Prius (registered in late 2009, but technically a 2010 model), with European "Premium" package including HID low beams and LED daytime running lights. The car has "auto" setting for lights, so I think it should be able to automatically turn on low beams in dark. At least dashboard lighting and the touch & go screen automatically dim, so there must be a sensor (the black dot in last photo, I think).
The problem is that low beams are always on (except in "parking lights only" mode). There is no difference between "auto" and "headlights on" setting. My guess is that this is because of the Nordic legislation requiring headlights being always turned on before 2010 (after 2010 daytime running lights were required/permitted in EU). Whether this behaviour can be changed through OBD programming? It really bothers me to run HIDs on daytime, because in the end all the extra energy is coming from fuel, and also because they have limited lifetime (and probably expensive to replace).
I have a concern has any experienced seeking water where the aux battery goes in the hatch compartment.? As well as where the emergency tire goes? I was taking the battery out this weekend to take it home and charge it, and I saw the flood of yellow water, how does this water get in the car?
Another question/concern when reconnecting the battery in reverse the positive terminal connects first and then the negative but I was experiencing some sparks pointing my way, I was wearing my plastic/gummy gloves but is this normal should I worry?
And what would happen if I forgot to reconnect the little black pump (the little hose that connects to the battery)?
In the dashboard settings, I set the miles to my previous vehicle. When I turn the vehicle off, it shows fuel cost. I could have swore that one of the vehicles we test drove showed an amount saved instead of pure cost, but for the life of me I can't locate this setting anywhere.

View 19 RepliesThis system has a feature that is supposed to adjust the sound level to compensate for road noise etc. I had a Ford with this feature and you could adjust the sensitivity. It worked great; adjust the volume sitting still and the volume went up and down as you traveled.
In the 2010 Prius, I have enable the feature but I cannot figure out if the sensitivity can be adjusted and I do not hear that it is working. I set the volume and start driving and as the road noise increases the sound just gets drowned out. If you turn it up, when you slow or stop it just blasts loudly; no adjustments at all.
There is moisture or dirt blocking the part of my settings display on my dashboard. I can't see the "Trip A/ Miles left before empty" area. Dealer said it was glue inside the dashboard. They ordered a new plastic window. I think it looks like moisture buildup... How would glue have gotten up there? I am fearful that the area will spread and I will not be able to see more of this area.... Car is a 2010 Model 3 with 12,000 miles.. 10 months old...

Afterward, on the multi-display (I have the smaller, "headsup" display), I see the message, "Settings (Press and hold)". I figured out how to enter the Settings menu, and I have tinkered with every option there-- "Eco", "Steering OFF", etc. But no matter what I do, the "Settings (Press and hold)" message will not go away.
I was thinking about checking out the above vehicle at my local dealer (Chevrolet). They're asking 15.9k and it has 57k miles. I need to know if it has a timing belt or a timing chain and how reliable is the engine/transmission.
