I have noticed in certain circumstances that the engine seems to be in a resonance where it is shaking noticeably and getting worse not better. It happens in two situations.
One is after gliding and slowing to make a turn (with the engine off). As I am exiting the turn and hit the gas the car shakes a lot for about a second or two, then smooths out.
I bought a used Certified Prius with 49k miles on it. I noticed when accelerating (and the display shows that I am using the ICE but not so much that it shoots up into the "Power" portion on the far right) that the there is a clicking noise coming from the front passenger side of the car.
It sounds very much like this:
I don't hear it when only the electric motor is running, and I don't hear it when I really punch it and the power meter is completely filled up. Its more when the power meter is in the middle of the display and the ICE kicks in and I am slowly accelerating.
My 2010 Prius has been making an odd noise intermittently while accelerating. I haven't been able to reproduce it for the mechanics (of course). The best description I have for the noise is this. It sounds like the click/rattle sound a car makes when it is stalling. Just sped up. This can happen at any time I accelerate (even at highway speeds) but it usually happens just after I start moving from a stop. When it occurs it feels like there is a drop in engine power and I either have to take my foot off the accelerator, or push down harder and power through.
View 10 RepliesSo lately I've been hearing what sounds like a slight lifter knock that develops at 1500 rpm to 2700 (I have ultragauge) when accelerating or maintain speed, and it only appears when the engine is at operating temp and disappears when rpm is below 1500 rpm and above 2500 rpm my oil is running at 3900 miles using Toyota synt 0W-20 and it looks pretty clean and at high mark of the dip stick.
View 3 RepliesI've noticed that when accelerating from a stop and turning onto an adjacent street to the left or right, there seems to be stuttering or shaking coming from the engine. I'm usually in ECO and only 1/3 of the way into the "engine half" zone on the HSI. It's not consistent but has become a bit of an annoyance.
View 19 RepliesThe noise seems routine. It happens when you get close to the car and open your door. I guess the car is anticipating that you will start the car soon and under the hood, some subtle mechanical noises occur. Just wondering what that noise is?
View 3 RepliesAt 13,000 miles I've experienced the "rough start". Pulled it out of the garage to wash and wax it. I tried to put it in EV Mode but it wouldn't because the traction battery was down to only 3 bars, I assume. The engine only ran for 4-5 seconds than I shut it off, washed it and waxed it. Left it outside, temperature was about 55 degrees. When I went to start it about 2 hours later to run an errand it felt like the engine was down a cylinder and I shut it off immediately. I waited a minute and it restarted just fine. After reading the threads about the "rough start" I believe it happened because I didn't let it run through all the necessary cycles during the prior start up.

I have driven 25,xxx miles on my 2010 Prius. Three times during the last thousand miles I have experienced very loud and scary engine noises during start up. The car had sat for at least ten hours outside in 20-30 degree weather.
I took the car into the dealership for an oil change and my service advisor told me that Toyota was aware of the problem and the noise was not coming from the engine- but a device that mates the ICE with the electric engine. He told me that although it was a loud and dangerous sounding noise, it was not something that would harm my motor. I asked that the noise be logged into my service record.
I've been recently having the engine rattle/knock noise occasionally when I start the car. After my first oil change, I mentioned this to the dealer and demonstrated this to them while they documented the issue. I left my car at the dealership for investigation.
The following day, my dealer said they called Toyota and created a case about this. Toyota responded saying they heard about this and the possible root cause is the Motor Mounts on the Prius. They will be sending parts (date is still unknown) to fix the issue. :rockon:
I specifically asked if there is any damage to the engine and they said absolutely not and there is nothing wrong internally with the car. This also makes kinda sense because if I press the accelerator to the ground when it starts up, the knock doesn't appear. It also works if I put the car into D and drive away.

i buy a used car from a friend. when I push the pedal to accelerate from still(RPM 1000-2000), i can hear clearly there is a noise from front and the bottom of the car (same source). It is a noise obviously generated by metal clashing with each other. But such noise doesn't appear when the car hit big holes on roads or when the RPM is higher than 2000RPM. the car goes smoothly and quietly on highway, but the noise worries me.
View 1 RepliesSo I had 1st rough cold start today on 2010 Prius with 72K. Wasn't too cold low 40s. The fix was to shut it down and then turn on again.
Engine sounded like it was working on 3 cylinders. It is probably ignition or perhaps valve train issue.. with ignition being prime suspect. If it happens again I'll pull and check plugs.
Mileage 192k. Signs...stumbling/rough engine startup for first time of the day and anytime the engine sits for a few minutes before turning on again (battery charging/speed high enough for engine to start, etc).

Started out with no code, then check engine light started coming on. P0301, misfire cylinder #1. Sparkplugs were replaced, and coil pack for #1 switched with known good one. EGR tube also cleaned of carbon.
Stumbling/roughness has been getting worse, about an inch of coolant used per week of driving. No oil in the coolant, and no coolant in the oil (no milkshake or anything like that).
Dirty fuel injectors were suspected, but no improvement after using Techron. Finally, a boroscope was used to inspect the cylinders through the sparkplug holes, and a very slow leak was found in cylinder #1. Since liquid cannot be compressed, during the compression cycle significant misfiring occurs.
I have not had my prius in winter yet so running the heater is new. I am noticing the engine will turn off when warned up as in summer if the heater is off. You turn the heater on and boom engine kicks on. Which of course kills my mileage and it's frustrating. Is it supposed to do this or is something wrong with my prius?
View 17 RepliesI've 2005 Subaru Forester automatic with 2.5L engine. It ran fine since I purchased it in 2005. However for the last 3 months it is behaving strangely. When it sits in the garage for 2 days or longer, it starts up very rough. It feels like the engine is misfiring. If I let it run for 10 to 15 minutes, it is back to normal!! The car has 80,000 miles. It was tuned up at 61,000 miles. I recently had a diagnostic check done. It showed no problems.

View 14 RepliesAbout 95% of the time our 2012 Elantra runs great. But then 5% of the time, it hits us with this intermittent starting problem. It will crank but just won't turn over. It really feels like it's just not getting any fuel. This has happened intermittently for the past 2 years. Every time we take it in, the dealer can't replicate the problem. It starts right up for them. The car will behave well for a while but then inevitably, it acts up again - usually at 6:30am when we need to get to the hospital for work.

It's not the shift interlock - it wouldn't even crank if it were that.
I just got a 2015 Prius 4 and during an ordinary turn onto an on-ramp, the engine died. The two yellow engine lights on the left of the panel turned on, but because I had to move along I just turned the car off then on, like a computer and it started right back up. I'm not sure if the electric engine died or not, everything was moving too fast.
I took it in to the dealer today and he said he never heard of that happening and if the engine light hasn't come on since he didn't know about it. I wanted him to log in the info as I couldn't leave the car today, but he said he couldn't do that unless he took it in and had it checked, which I guess I'll do next week.
Yesterday the truck run Perfect. Got home and shut it off. This morning I get I. Turn key and the truck will crank but not start. After it tries to start the oil light comes on. I Che ked the oil and it was 2.5 its low. Added oil and it still isn't starting! 2010 f150 5.4l ....
View 3 RepliesI have a 2010 Prius III I bought used the other day and all of a sudden I'm getting intermittent shaking / rough starting sometimes after the car sits for a while. However, after that happens it seems to run and drive just fine. At first it didn't throw any codes or anything but now Check engine light on with 3 codes.
