Prius (2010-12) :: Rattling Sound When Window Is Open?
Oct 8, 2013
It is very annoying having your window open and there is a rattling sound. I not sure where it is coming from.

I notice when I go over expansion joints on the freeway with my window open I can hear a bit of a clank sound. I do not hear it with the windows closed.
Also it must be done at speed > 55mph.
I do have a trailer hitch but it seems quite tight.
Is this normal? Is it an issue I should bring up at the 5k service?
We just upgraded our Prius from Gen 3 to Gen 3....a 2012. Great ride, just drove it from SoCal on a Sierra Mtns road trip, a little hiking and snowboarding for our spring break. What we failed to notice upon purchase was a passenger door whose controls want work! The drivers door can lock the car and operate the passenger window and lock. However, the passenger door switch won't open or close the window, nor will it lock the door. All other doors and locks work normally.

Noticed engine rattling/marble sound at low RPM under load a few weeks ago. This is not just when the engine is cold or on startup. Sometimes when hot. It's also not all the time. It's felt/heard over on the pax side. Just wondering where to go (dash/engine mount?). I did download the TSB for rattling but the local dealer has never heard of it even when they asked their tech (?!? How is that possible?). It's a good dealer so that surprises me.
What to look at? No codes so far.
I have had this problem for a little while. When I would go over bumps I would get a rattling sound coming from the front end. Not necessarily big bumps. A lightly wash board road would do it bad. Tonight at a stop light I lightly moved the steering wheel from one side to the other. Maybe only an inch or so. Going in each direction I heard a knock or dull click. I got under the car and tried moving the tie rods. They seemed pretty tight. Any thoughts? I just want to be prepared when I take it to the dealer for repair.
View 4 RepliesI have 70,000 miles and this weird rattling somewhere in front, probably drivetrain, only audible at 60-70 mph, medium load, so no pinging. worse on high speed right turns, like highway entrance, and in this circumstance audible at about 50mph.
I recently did cleaning of intake manifold, EGR pipe, and TB and an oil change and no change. The noise is totally absent in city/suburb style of driving with speeds up to 50mph. what could that be? It's clearly getting worse. could it be connected to the CV clicking noise i have at slow speeds?
I searched some more and there are few threads about noise that sounds like pinging, but doesn't behave like pinging. no resolution except for the standard advice about higher octanes and gas additives:
-Engine ping under load
-Higher octane gas for fuel pinging
-Engine pinging
Mine is 2010 gen 3 Prius. I bought it brand new and about 6,500 miles. From the beginning, I sometimes hear a grinding and rattling sound coming from the right passenger side. It is not from plastics. It is mechanical sound. But the problem is it does not happen all the time. So we were hesitant to go to dealer because they will never find it. But it got more frequent with cold weather.
Now, it does make rasping buzzing sound like a loose fan usually after I start a car in the morning and the heater is kicked in. I don't think it has something to do with fan because if I just run it itself in high speed, you cannot hear it. It is just some bad combination that makes this sound that makes you go crazy.
We are afraid that something big will happen after the warranty is over but as we expected the dealer said they do not hear the sound. The sound comes out in low accelerating and disappears in high accelerating. Now I really regret having bought Hybrid. It looks like the dealershop has no clue where to look at. I think the sound gets worse with the cold weather.
I can hear rattling coming from the driver's door at low speeds on uneven roads. At higher speeds there are no noises, it only happens at speeds of up to 50 km/hour. I removed the door panel and there are no loose parts.
View 14 RepliesWhen I open the door, I can hear something like the car is pumping fluid, like the electric sound. Is that normal? I have a 2012 prius v.
View 4 RepliesWhen you close the door and the window is down, the window glass sounding like it is rattling when the door shuts? I am wondering if that is normal for 430's or if there is something missing or broken in my doors. (They both do it)
I don't really notice it while driving but it makes my skin crawl every time I shut the doors. No sound as long as the windows are up.
So, I've been noticing that my passenger side window in my Corolla is being a little weird. Whenever someone opens or closes the door while the window is closed, the window makes a rattling sound. Also, when I play music in the car, the window sounds like it's shaking even though it is fully up. The other windows don't do this and it will stop if I press the button to raise the window. Another thing it does is that when the window is almost fully down, it makes a thump or a clicking noising and then it goes down. So could it be a loose window or a bad motor? Also, any way to fix this myself other than taking out the door panel?
View 6 RepliesI have the three way flapper switch and lately when I would start the car cold with the switch in the stock position I would hear a strange rattling/vibrating sound coming from the rear of the car then the other night I was trying to creep home and the flapper wouldn't close and still won't close no matter what position the switch is in. I looked and everything looks fine, the vacuum line is still connected and everything. Could this be a problem in the vacuum system or a blown fuse? Solenoid problem? I've never heard of this before....
View 13 RepliesSometimes when carrying long lumber it is just necessary to leave the rear window open. But the warning beep is obnoxious. Is there a way to disable this?
View 10 RepliesWe have a "new" 2010 F150 with factory sunroof & power sliding rear window. Well like the post title says, it'll open but not close.
I took apart the switch & cleaned the contacts - it all looks and fits together as it should. I went ahead and removed the cables controlling the window slider frame to close it. I'm guessing the motor is somewhere behind the back seats?
I just took my 2007 Prius into dealer to repair the driver's side window which hasn't worked for several months. (locked in closed position - others work)
Service dept says I need a new switch which will cost +$500 plus labor. Could that be right?
Have a metallic/rattling sound under my car while idling. Don't hear it while driving. 2010 Mitsubishi Outlander

Every time I push the pedal I hear a faint high pitched squeak ?
Also cargo area has a rattling sound that increases at highway speeds.
280 miles.
I have a 2011 RX350 and recently noticed rattling sound coming from inside the glove compartment.
I think it comes from the plastic cover of the aircon filter at the back of the glove compartment. This cover seems bit loose even when installed back properly and the vibration (especially when driving over uneven roads) is causing the rattling sound.
I know it's a minor problem but the rattling sound can get irritating at times. My temporary fix is to push back the heavy owner's manual on that cover to prevent vibration.
So I got this rattling sound like a piece of tin rattling underneath the truck, it is coming from the front of the transmission area. About 6 months ago the same thing was happening so I took the truck in for some other warranty work and had the dealership check out this rattle. When I picked the truck up I asked and they said it was rocks/gravel caught up underneath and they took them out and the rattle was gone. The truck is a 2010 FX4.
View 12 RepliesI have 2012 aqua and it has done 12,000 KM on it. When I press the throttle further, the ICE kicks in and there is a kind of rattling sound coming from ICE at times (not Rev up sound). However, when the car is in idle , the ICE kicks in to charge the battery and that time I hear only engine Rev up sound and not a rattle.
