I have noticed something about my 2010 Prius. Lately when I am driving the car for about an hour, the engine slowly reduces RPMs (based on sound) when I take my foot off the gas. The MPG indicator slowly goes from near zero to 100. Like VERY slowly. And that is just street driving below 45 mph. The car has almost 60k miles. Tires are correct and in very good shape.

Reason I am asking this is that I have this problem and own a 2013 KIA Sorento, but understand the Santa Fe V6 shares the same motor and tranny. I also read that one long term test of the Santa Fe on the web had this very same problem, but in the end after happening several times, stopped happening.
After reading much info, I ordered a Transmission Temp Sensor as this seemed to work on some cars, but it's really a hit or miss thing.
I just had an oil change done on our 2010. Also of note, I've just switched the winter tires over to summer tires - done myself. So here's the issue. When coasting, particularly at low speeds, a rubbing noise can be heard issuing from the front right somewhere. The noise goes as the rpms go and seems to go away when either braking or accelerating. I'm not sure if it's present at high speeds due to road noise which would overwhelm it.

View 19 RepliesLast week as I was returning home I had a strange event in my Prius. I was coasting at about 30 mph when I heard a very faint pop sound a bit like a balloon breaking. It sounded like it came from the right rear area of the car. Afterwards I thought I detected a very faint chemical smell. Could this have been something involving the HV battery?
View 10 RepliesSo this has happened to me a few times now in the cold temps. For my job I'm left to sit and idle every now and then after over an hour of driving.
I'll park my car, ICE will turn off, ICE temp at 195. Sit with heat on at 65 degrees. After about 10 minutes the engine temp will drop to about 110, which the ICE will start and warm up to about 135 and turn off. Hybrid battery stays above 55% and normally hits about 65% on every ICE start. (I have extra instrumentation installed to monitor)
I have 60k on a 2010 Prius III. my mileage is slowing dropping, i am thinking about installing new plugs.?
View 7 RepliesWhen I go out to do errands around town (I live right in town) I get horrendous gas mileage. Now, I understand gas mileage is high at the beginning of a trip, but for this long and this high and under these circumstances? I'm getting ABOVE 10l/100km when I have 80% charge available (for americans, that's disgustingly high MPG like, pick-up truck high), AND my foot is completely off the gas. Literally, coasting, or braking, and I'm still sucking up gas. What the heck?
Is this just because it takes a certain amount of time for the engine to run no matter what or something? I still don't see any reason for me to be eating up all that gas when my foot isn't even on the gas AND most importantly, I have charge available. Feels pointless for me to use my car for what I use it for 70% of the time, which is for quick errands around town at low speeds. Thought the prius was suppose to be a superstar for this kind of thing.
New 2012 GX 460 in 01/2012. While GX is coasting between 55 mph and 70 mph, noticeable "whine" from vehicle. (Sounds like the whine from snow tires, but that happens all of the time in a previous vehicle.) Noise disappears when the accelerator is engaged. Been like this from day #1 and now at 10k miles. Dealer seems perplexed; has said at delivery and at 5k service that it is the tires. Bridgestone dealer says "not our tires."
View 14 RepliesSo I've noticed something on my 2015 Elantra that I haven't noticed on my previous car (Corolla). When I'm coasting at low speed (i.e. when I see a stop sign/red light I'll just coast until I'm closer and then press the brakes) it feels as though the brakes are sometimes being pressed when I'm not actually pressing them. Is this normal? Why does it do that? I'd like it to not do that as it's kinda annoying. Sometimes it "brakes" enough that I actually have to press the gas again otherwise the car is going too slow, which defeats the purpose of why I'm coasting in the first place as I do it to save some gas.
My Elantra has an automatic transmission if that matters.
This is on a 2010 GTI with 20K km.
I've noticed a buzzing noise coming from the front of the car whenever I coast downhill. Almost sounds like an off-tune radio. Noise gets louder as the car picks up speed, and becomes quieter as I brake. What can it be? I think I was in 3rd gear.
Why my 2010 auto trans 4cyl Camry often feels like someone is applying the foot brake when I take my foot off the accelerator? Is it the auto trans downshifting? When I feel it occur and slip it into neutral, it releases and I coast freely again. It's really annoying sometimes especially as I've been driving a 1995 Camry auto for the past 15 years which does not do this.

View 5 RepliesI am a first time Toyota car owner. I bought a 2010 Toyota Corolla LE this past Saturday. It has only 42,000 miles on it, and I got a pretty decent deal on it! I'm still getting used to how the car drives, but it seems to be running great. The only thing I notice sometimes is that I am coasting downhill (not using the brakes) I notice a bit of a vibration sound coming from what sounds like the back windshield. If it keeps occurring, I might take it to the dealer for them to check it out. With my luck, the issue might not even happen though with them there.

View 1 RepliesI had my 2006 Prius (108k miles) shipped (on the back of a flatbed) from Los Angeles to Seattle in mid-October, and I noticed a drop of MPG pretty quickly. I went from 46mpg to now 34mpg over the last month, over 3 tanks of gas.
I have Goodyear tires, but I don't know the make of them (I remember they were 'High Efficiency' or something, meant for fuel economy) and I checked the PSI and it was 36 front, 34 rear. At first I thought it must be the tires but they seemed fine.
Then I thought it was the cold weather, but really the change in temperature wasn't very dramatic (until last week) as I was on the beach in LA where it was typically 65 and the past month in Seattle it would be typically 50-55 (this past week notwithstanding!).
I got a brand new 2014 prius c(one) about two weeks ago now and it feels like it "hard shifts" when coasting from 43mph-40mph. The dealership says its normal, they said that it is just the engine switching.
View 14 RepliesMy 2008 Prius had a front quarter panel replaced after my wife back in to a fire hydrant.The body work looks fine , no issue there, but now when the car is coasting with the gas engine off you can hear a humming sound that was not there before the repair.Also it does,nt seem to be recharging the hybrid battery at the same rate.My thought is maybe the body shop caused some damage to MG1 by spinning the front tires on a emision testing machine or rollers.Does special precautions would have to be used when testing wheel clearances after a quarter panel replacement on a hybrid? Would a body shop need to do this ?

Cause: Coasting in Drive (Applying the gas at all stops the vibration, putting the car in Neutral also stops the vibration)
Every time I turn on my 2010 impreza and slowly drive away i hear a clunking sound coming from somewhere in the front. it happens almost every time i start it up, even if it is warmed up.
Went to the dealer (car is 4 weeks old) did a test drive and it only did it once for them of course even though we tried almost 10 times. What it could be and will take it in for a full day to let it get cold.
Also, a slight rumbling when the car is cold and the blue cold engine light is on? I know the car being cold explain that but you'd think that a brand new car would be free from things like that.
