Prius (2010-12) :: Powering Off Without Putting Car In Park?
Apr 24, 2011
Is it very bad to Power off before putting the car into Park? It seems to go into Park upon hitting the Power button automatically.

View 19 RepliesDealer advised the following procedure for parking car:
1. Come to a stop, foot on break
2. Put car into Neutral, make sure Neutral is lit up
3. Then press the Park button.
They said this is better for transmission. Didn't see a mention of it in the manual, and have no problem doing this. Or are you just coming to a stop and then hitting the Park button, skipping the Neutral step?
Just bought a Prius 2014 Two and am getting frustrated when I put the car in park get out and go to open another door and its locked. In the manual I know it says press the power button put it in neutral, press the unlock button for five seconds and release. BUT nothing happens.
View 5 RepliesThis is something I have noticed the last 3 months. I have had the car 2 years. When I first start it and it is completely cold, it will only run like EV mode (HV battery powering the car) even though the gas engine is merrily running and it is not in EV. We live part way down a small hill, so now I often discharge the HV battery to a point low enough to trigger the recharge function which keeps the gas engine running forever. It does this morning or afternoon, if it has been sitting a few hours and is completely cooled off. It did it in Sept. at 65F and it does it now at 35F.
View 12 RepliesAfter getting on the highway, the red triangle of death, the amber ABS and the VSC lights came on, and little exclamation point came on on millage/audio screen, while battery power went down from high blue to one blue bar. Pulled car over to parking lot, and put in park. After putting it in park, the car would not go out of neutral, but the power still worked.
View 15 RepliesLately, when I put the car into Park, I often hear a short beeping noise....sometimes one tone, sometimes two. Nothing seems to be wrong with the transmission, and my mechanic has no idea what it is.
View 2 RepliesI am not sure if this is a problem just because I have a One trim, but sometimes if I am on a short trip and my hybrid battery has gone down to 1/4 level, the ICE will kick in to charge it and will remain on even after I have put the car in park and I have ended up powering off the car while this is still going on. Any thing that will cause damage to the car? I am hoping not considering normal ICE cars get shut off all the time while the ICE is running, but my Prius ends up powering down a little more noisily than normal, so I am a tad bit worried.
View 3 RepliesIt was raining where I live. (We may have a little snow later). So I turned on the rear wiper to the continuous setting.
When I got to work, and rotated the wiper stalk to turn off the rear wiper, nothing happened. So the wiper could be stopped only by powering down the car.
109,000 miles into my 2009 Prius with no problems, I'm having an annoying issue with the alarm. Sometimes - about half the time, without any discernible reason - when I power the car on, it gives three rapid, very short honks. I can't relate it doing this to anything - doors can be open or closed, it can have sat for a week or have just been turned off, ect. I have the KARR factory alarm thing installed, but it seems to function normally.
View 2 RepliesI've got my used 2010 Prius 2 weeks a go. I have the following strange observation.
1 - Parked my car with parking brakes
2 - Some time after, I get back into the car, release the parking brake and drives off. I notice that ICE come on IN THE PARKING LOT, when I have my battery one bar from full. My understanding is the ICE should never come on to charge the battery. it is such a waste of gas. I'm in ECO mode, BTW.
3 - I press the gas more when I get out of the parking lot. When I hit the red light and stopped shortly after, I see the ICE is shut, which is normal.
I cannot explain what I see in 2), and this keeps happening every time. Is this a cause of concern?
I have had my 2010 Prius since August 2009, and have never experienced this til now.
I had pulled into my driveway and was talking on the phone using my factory-installed bluetooth speakerphone. When I power the Prius off while doing this, the call is in limbo for like 30 seconds before my phone's internal speaker picks it back up, so I put the car in Park and sat there talking.
I talked for about 10 minutes. Suddenly, the car started creeping forward and I hit the brake pedal. The car had shifted from Park to Drive.
No harm was done, but from now on I'm going to engage the emergency brake too.
My park assist doesn't go on. It only peeps two times when I push The assist button and nothing happens. Before it works normally.
View 1 RepliesI was recently having some AC issues, I dropped the glove box to check the cabin filter, That's when all hell broke loose., I noticed a plug in one of the boxed was loose, I pushed it in and the car started beeping, so I shut the car off, then started it, Its park brake was stuck, so I tried everything from disconnecting 12v batt, to disconnecting the high voltage batt and then both. Now it won't run, won't do anything and throws no codes.
View 3 RepliesWhen you put the car in park what exactly stops the car from moving. In other is it a brake of sorts or ??
View 19 RepliesI'm coming up on 20K miles and I started to notice a few months ago that when I park the car it rolls a little bit more than when it was new one year ago and rolls more than my 2004 Sienna in park with 89K miles. Is this normal wear for this type of trans? It has mostly highway miles.
View 5 RepliesI have a Toyota Prius 2012 type 2 and I did install a vip 3200 Plus alarm system. My question is that why is the automatic lock not working? I park the car, get out, and close the door but do not lock the car. After 5 minutes, the automatic lock system is not engage or the alarm system does not arm.
View 11 RepliesI only notice this when I back the car from the garage and come to a stop before going forward. It is a very metallic clunk. It sounds like its coming from the rear passenger side but I am. not 100% certain. It happens when I actually stop before switching to drive.
It is a 2013 Two. 30,000 miles on it.
My wife bought a new 2010 Prius Hybrid. It has consistently achieved 51+ miles per gallon. She bought it in June-2010 and at the 7000 mile mark (October?) called me concerned about a noise it was making under the hood. She described it as akin to the noise a playing card made when as a child you fastened it to the spokes of a bicycle. Chattering? It lasted 15-30 seconds and went away, before engaging in reverse or forward. A trip to the dealership was fruitless, an "intermittent episode" the diagnosis.
Now, nothing since until today. Same noise again, 12,000 mile mark, goes away in same timeframe, in park. Only today, through the course of several errands, her dash MPG indicator reads 39 MPG. She is waiting as we speak in the dealer lobby as they plug into the computer hunting for fault codes, etc. Having issues, especially an indicated dropoff in MPG seemingly in conjunction with such a noise?
For the last couple of days I have noticed that I have water dripping from the engine area of my after I park or stop. The dripping appears to stop after some duration (usually don't wait to how long it persists) but I don't recall seeing this the earlier in my ownership (first 12 months of owning 2010 Prius). It clearly appears to be water as it has no color or scent and when it dries, it leaves nothing behind. The only change that comes to mind is that I have been using the front defroster which I did not use before. It is not due to using the air conditioning, as I don't use it during the AC during the winter months at all.
View 4 Replies2011 Prius II, purchased 2/2012. Driving down the highway, and the car pops itself into Neutral and the check hybrid system warning light comes on on. Had to have it towed to the closest dealership who pretty much told me it must have been my fault; I must have hit the park button driving down the road. However, about an hour prior to getting on the highway, we were driving down the road, heard a beep and started decelerating. I noticed the car had some how ended up in Neutral. Shifted it back to drive kept on our merry way. Half hour later we pull into a gas station, and the park button is not working. The only way we could get the car into park was by turning the car off (pushing the power button).
Once we got back in the car, we checked the park button and it seemed to be working again, so we took off down the highway. We only got about a mile before the car popped back into neutral, the check hybrid system light came on, and we could not keep the car in drive (by shifting it back into drive) because within one second the car would pop back into neutral. The day previous to all this, my car had just had its 5k mile maintenance.
The next day I didn't even make it out of my drive way before the car pops itself back into neutral, but no codes or anything pop up. Put it back into park and drive to work without further incidents. I bring the car to the dealership where I purchased it and they opened a ticket with Toyota drive it for 100 miles and cannot recreate the issue and Toyota is unaware of any issues with park button or the spontaneous neutral shifting. This was 2 weeks ago.
My backup camera stopped turning on when I put the car in reverse. Why? I'm thinking it might be a fuse issue, but I can seem to figure out which fuse from the information in the manual.
