I always apply my parking brake whether im parked on an incline or not. Sometimes if I disengage the parking brake, and set my car in Drive on a flat surface, my car does not advance (I'm not pressing the gas). This tells me that my parking brake is sticking! If I apply the gas slowly, I hear the brakes "clunk" off and I finally get going.

Even the car is in Parking Position and you push brake pedal, it half way pushed and Tick/Click noise like a shutter closing sound and then goes.
It quite hear able noise and coming from some time now.
I just noticed yesterday when I used the electronic Parking Brake. When I engaged the Electronic Parking brake, the DRL Indicator (light) on the dash went off. I did not go outside of the vehicle to see if they actually turned off (the vehicle was still running). Is that normal?
View 10 RepliesIt's a 07 prius with 65k miles. I realized that it is making this squeaking noise while going over bumps "ONLY" when the brakes are applied.
I have 2 toyota dealerships checked. 1st dealer said no noise and 2nd dealer also said no noise... then, i requested to drive with the mechanic and he somehow heard the noise while I am in the car.

Parking Brake not releasing fully and therefore the car thinks it's on, sounds the gong and puts a big red P on the MFI? I've had this problem a couple of times now. I can cure it by hooking my left foot under the parking brake pedal and just lifting it slightly at the top of its natural travel when operating the release handle. But it certainly makes me not want to put it on. Trip to the workshop required?
View 24 RepliesI am getting an occasional (though increasingly frequent) 'brake pad' noise from one or more of the rear brakes on my NHW11. Initially it would only manifest for half a minute or so per trip (and would disappear after some braking) but it is now more or less constant. It is a light 'rubbing' noise which you would expect from worn brake pads.
View 4 RepliesA few weeks back my rear drivers side wheel started smoking severely...when I stopped you could smell the brake material, feel the heat coming from the wheel, and lots of smoke. I speculated it was the parking brake that got hung up. I jiggled that cable around and then went around the block - no issue. Note: I did not leave the parking brake on.
It happened again a week later, but not as bad. I took it into the dealer today. They said heat was evident as it burned off a sticker on the disk or caliper hsg area. They have not determined yet if it is parking brake or caliper?
When I was at Luscious Garage earlier today for a transmission service, the technician told me that my parking brake is out of adjustment. Sure enough, I checked the factory service manual when I got home and found that the spec is 8-11 notches at 67.5lbf. My own test revealed that it was taking between 15-17 notches on mine!

What kind of damage could have been done? Brakes seem to work fine although the parking brake barely works now.
View 19 RepliesI recently noticed that when I release the parking brake on our new 15 F-Sport it make a loud noise. It's hard to explain, but it kind of sounds like a spring being released with a clunking sound. (Sorry for the weird description).
When I press the brake to set it I am not pushing it all the way to the floor or forcing it at all. I am just using normal pressure to apply it.
It seems about once a week the rubber cover that goes over the food pedal for the parking brake comes off. I've been careful to replace it correctly but it still keeps happening? Btw it's a 2010 v with atp ...
View 9 RepliesToday I stopped at the post office to check my mail. I put the car in park and didn't shut off the engine - this is what I always do. When I returned a few moments later the car would not go into reverse (this was after releasing the parking brake) and the traction control symbol came on. The car would go into drive but that didn't work much as I was up against a hill (or almost against it). Shutting the car off and turning it on again solved the problem. The parking space was badly potholed; I'm assuming I had less than full contact on one wheel which caused the traction control to kick in which prevented reverse from engaging. And to be clear - it's not that it went into reverse but didn't go anywhere; reverse simply wouldn't engage (I did not try neutral),
View 13 RepliesWhen parking on an incline, say my driveway which is pretty steep, I engage my emergency brake. When I release the brake I get a creaking noise as I put it in reverse to back out of the driveway.Two questions is using the emergency brake really going to keep my car from rolling back down the driveway and does the creaking noise mean the emergency or rear brakes are being stressed by holding the car in an incline for several hours each day?
I really worry some days I am going to walk outside and my car will be in the neighbor's yard.
Here's the story, noise first appeared while accelerating to merge onto highways and then applying gentle braking. Sounded like "seagulls". Not my description. To me it sounded like a rubbing pulsating noise. Would not go away unless you came to a full stop. Then would appear again every other time you entered highway at, say, 85 and applied brakes to slow down to 75-80.
The kicker is, that was 35+k miles ago. Annoying, but three different dealerships never found anything and the service techs always made big eyes once you mentioned 85+ mph. "Oh, we can't legally replicate that"
Fast forward to now (meanwhile rotors changed, pads, tires) - the noise seems to appear randomly at lower speeds. It is also quieter (barely noticeable above 65).
Example from today - left dealership sporting new tires and a fresh proper 4-wheel alignment.
After accelerating to ~50 noticed the sound. Couple miles down the road stopped, made a U-turn - sound gone. Could not replicate for a while. Then had it twice on "straight and level" segments, seemingly random. On cruise control at 55 (hear it the best at that speed) sounds stay the same regardless of rpm (6-5-4 gear - no changes). Pulsating gets quicker-slower with speed. Very gently decelerated to 25 - noise went away completely, pedal to the metal back to 60 - no noise.
I'm at a complete loss as for what it can be. Turning makes no impact, no play on bearings (and I'm pretty sure those would have died long ago if it was them), rotors changed with zero impact, tires too.
Changes over time - got quieter and started to appear at lower speeds.
All stock except for H&R Sport springs on stock shocks. 88000 miles
I have a 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid 4WD. Whenever I apply the brake pedal past a certain point, I hear some sort of clunking type of noise from the front of the car. The noise can be done when braking hard, or even if I am at a stop and just press the pedal down hard. It sounds bad but I have not noticed any issues in braking performance. Everything is stock, brake pads have 60-70% as of my last serving. What this is and if I need to be concerned?
View 4 RepliesToday we heard what sounded like a flag pole clinking while driving in a parking lot. Turns out the sound was coming from my Prius (2010 III). We then heard several sounds, going from the clinking to what sounded like something falling off and something possibly dragging for a few inches. When we stopped to check, we found a large amount of pebbles resting in the belly (body? undercover? the black plastic parts on the bottom?). Tapping the plastic would cause pebbles to fall out.
View 11 Replies2005 F-250 6.0 4x4. After about 50,000 miles on my original brakes, they started to make a squealing noise when applying moderate brake pressure and slowing down around 30mph-0mph. It only happens after Ive driven the truck about 30 mins. It must be warmed up. After 100,000 I decided to change the brakes.....they had plenty of life left on them, but I changed them anyway. I put on new rotors and pads and calipers in the front because one was hanging.
After about 10,000 miles, the exact same squeal has returned. With the windows down, its loud enough to physically hurt your ears if you are next to a car and the sound can bounce back into the cab. It sounds terrible. I thought it was the front brakes, so I took them apart this weekend to put in some Disc Brake Quiet. They pads look great, plenty left, the rotors look great, no grooves. Everything is tight. I relubed pins and brackets and clips. Today...same squeal still. I am at a complete loss here. It is some sort of harmonic squeal and the only thing I can figure is that the rears are the culprit. I have a drivers rear caliper that will hang and stick if you drive it really hard, so I am considering replacing the rear calipers too and do the disc brake quiet treatment there as well. Im not confident this will solve the problem.
Like I said, its so loud you can't drive with the windows down. Its a piercing squeal. Is there anything else that I can check? I can't imagine others don't do this. Its so loud and pronounced that it must be some sort of design flaw or something.
I really like my 2012 Prius v, but in cool or cold weather, which happens quite often in Seattle, when I first exit my parking spot, there is a "moaning sound". I have relayed that info to my Toyota dealership and was told that Toyota is aware of the issue but has no fix. I tried contacting Toyota online and have made several attempts to get updated info at my dealership but have had no luck.

I believe it is the front drivers side but after taking wheel off and taking it to the dealership. I can not find the problem. The dealership states they can't hear it while on several road test, but I have showed them the video clip and they have no idea what it is.
I have a new 2014 RX350, and around the 500 mile mark I began hearing a faint static/buzzing noise that is definitely noticeable when it is very cold outside. It seems to be related to the braking system (i.e. when you press and release the brake pedal), but I have heard it when I'm just driving and not touching the brake pedal. It almost sounds like the car's electronics are going through a self-check, but it is audible. Took my RX to the dealer and they said that the noise is "normal" and that all third generation RX's have that noise - something to do with the brake pedal modulation? All I know is that it is annoying, especially when everything else is so quiet when you drive without the radio on and the fan speed turned down. Definitely disappointing in any car but especially a Lexus.
