Normally I wait for the car to stop backing up before switching to drive. Today I tried switching to drive while still backing up. It coasted to a stop then went forward.
Is that safe for the traction motor?
I have a 2002 Limited with an issue with my driver's seat. The heater works but I cannot get the seat to move forward/backward etc. The passenger side works and I've switched the fuses around so it isn't the fuse.

View 8 RepliesI have an Elantra 2012 sedan GL and last year i tried installing HID's. It worked for a whole but then it stopped after. I learned that it wasn't getting enough power so then yesterday I bought a wiring kit to be able to wire my HID to tap to the battery to get more power. Everything was fine till I got to work but when I had to leave work., there was an issue. Whenever i switch the gear from park to drive or reverse or neutral. My car seems to jerk. And when I'm driving and it changes gears, it also jerks. Kind of the same thing how if your driving a manual car and you change gears wrong. This happens when my lights are off. But when i turn them on it then stops. And when i turn it back of it doesn't do it anymore.
View 5 RepliesJust a few days back, the front passenger seat of my 2010 Legacy ceased to move forward and backward. So no one can feasibly sit in the front when I'm driving unless under 5' tall. The lumbar and seat back motors seem to be working just fine, so just the back and forward function/motor is dead. I initially thought something was stuck in the tracks that hold the seat in, but checked all of that out and nada. The motor makes no sound or vibration. I'm also surprised the seat mechanism seems to be broken in a 4-yr-old car with low mileage.
View 4 RepliesI've noticed that if I press the EV button when stopped at a stop sign or red light, I can get the vehicle moving up to 25 MPH with the battery. This must save fuel. But I wonder if I am doing something that causes problems with the battery, motor, or other systems.
View 19 RepliesEver since I got my 2010 Prius (about a week ago) I always get a little scare whenever I'm backing out of a parking place. The Prius seems to think that the ideal time to start the ICE to warm it up is when I'm moving backwards and halfway out of the spot... which, of course, causes a little vibration in the car and makes me think I hit or ran over something. It really scared me the first time... especially since I had only had the car a few hours then and I'm mostly used to it by now, but every now and then it catches me off guard.
View 19 RepliesI've been experimenting with 'B' mode while commuting. While stopped at a light, the ICE never shuts down. Is that normal? It seems like it should, regardless of the drive mode. The ICE was fully warmed up (190 F). I believe the battery was fully charged, as well. It tends to stay charged while in B mode.
If I switch from Drive to B while stopped at a light, the ICE stays off until the car starts moving. But if it was in B mode already, it never shuts down when the car is stopped.
When you put the car in park what exactly stops the car from moving. In other is it a brake of sorts or ??
View 19 RepliesIn the last couple of months I have noticed my '10 Prius III begins to roll forward or backwards about a foot depending upon which drive mode I select without releasing the brake. So here's the normal scenario I get in the car have my foot on the brake, turn it on wait for the ready beep/light, my foot has never left the brake or lessened pressure but not so much as to trigger the hill assist, I shift into D to go forward but say a car is coming and I don't want to go yet my car moves about a foot forward and I feel the brake pump up and then resist my foot. The same thing happens if I put it in R she rolls back a foot and stops. I don't recall noticing it before the great ECU update but I also can't say it didn't happen before the update was accomplished.
View 4 RepliesI remember that my 2005 Prius had a short whirring noise when I shut it off, as some coolant fluid was moved around.
But my 2010 Prius has been pretty quiet at shut-down, until recently (has it always been there, or now that it's cold weather?) I noticed there's a very faint whirring noise coming from the engine compartment at shut-down. It lasts for quite a while -- almost a minute, then stops.
Our Prius is only a year old with less than 9,000 miles. Everything has been fine with it and then yesterday I took it out of the garage and started to drive and there was the most horrendous grinding/squealing/scraping noise as I started moving from the front passenger side (UK passenger, so left looking out).
I stopped the car and had a look, as at first I thought I was dragging something, but nothing to be seen. Checked the parking brake was definitely not engaged. I then thought perhaps something is caught in the brake pads and it will go in a bit, however even hard braking didn't seem to change the noise at all.
Carried on (I was going about 7 miles), and as I drove it would gradually get quieter, and then get louder again, with the occasional "clang" sound almost like a spring under tension suddenly moving.
Towards the end of the journey it had started to go quieter again, but with the window down you could still hear constant squeal/grind.
Parked the car, was away for an hour, came back and set off home and the noise was totally gone. Entirely silent all the way back home! Now I don't know what to do - whether it will come back, or whether I should take it in to garage for them to look (even though it's now not making any noise).
I have a 2008 Prius basic model bought second hand. There are two issues since I have bought the car; first it will roll back or forward when the brake applied, this happens on any uphill or downhill. I brought the car to Toyota service centre, they did a brake test, the test passed. but this doesn't resolve this issue. It just very weird. during driving, all brake works ok, but parking the car, if not in even service, it starts to roll.
Second, recently I hear there's a crack sound when apply the brake during low speed, especially during the stop/start traffic, and I notice mostly happens when the electrical motor in running. So when brake, the crack, like the spark comes from somewhere like battery. While brake to slow down from high speed, seems no sound. So I suspect it was from the battery or electric motor.
This car was running fine until my daughter brought it to a reputable tire shop to have new tires put on and an alignment done. The day after this was done, she started having issues with the car not wanting to move when it is in drive. It would eventually take off, but very reluctantly, and once she got going down the road it would be fine. After a couple days like this, it just wouldn't go at all in drive unless someone was pushing it. It goes fine in reverse.
The transmission fluid level had been recently checked, and was fine. Now when this problem cropped up and it was checked, the fluid was gone! We don't notice anything on the ground where it has been parked.
I recently noticed that one of my windows doesn't go all the way down when I use the switch. I try auto down as well as holding the switch down until the window reaches the bottom, but no matter what, the window won't go down as far as the others.
View 7 RepliesOk, Lately my Touareg has been making a strange sound in the morning when I first put it in drive and start moving. It sounds like a spring uncoiling or something. The sound is coming from under the floor near the passenger seat as best as I can tell. It only happens for a second but is certainly noticeable. It also happens after being parked for a few hours at work. I love my Touareg but sometimes I wonder if they made it too complicated from an electrical standpoint.
View 6 RepliesInitially thought I had a clicking valve but the clicking occurs only when I shift to drive and take off. Now I think it may be related to the transmission. Clicking goes away after truck warms up. Checked the spark plugs and all were light brown no black oil.
Generally speaking, is there anything in the trans that would be able to click when the truck is moving? This sound has been around now for about 6 months so I'm stumped. Also checked the ujoints etc....can't find anything wrong.
I have a 2010 blizzard pearl prius 4 and i just got it pre owned with only 39k miles about 2 months ago. I didn't notice this until just now but the first position on the headlight switch does not do anything...its supposed to turn on the little parking light up front and the parking light in the rear as well as the license plate light and the instrument panel lights. Mine does not do any of that until i switch the headlight on all the way. This tells me that my lights are not burned out but that there is a problem with the switch/stalk.
View 3 RepliesI'm looking for all my options for a constant or not constant power source to install a switch (an on & off toggle/other) for I could have my emblems light up without using headlights or parking lights.
Basically for you could only see the emblems on at night.
I originally tapped into the side parking lights to use for the front emblems and the rear license plate lights for back emblem.
My 2010 Prius IV has fog lights but no switch on the light/turn signal lever. Did Toyota put them in instead of using a blank. The accessory list shows fog lights on the V only. Would they work if I had a different control lever installed?
