Prius (2010-12) :: Noise Coming From Brakes / Suspension

Parked Prius making awful sound from brakes. Could it be Suspension? However, I am not sure how to describe this one.

View 10 RepliesSince new my Prius V has had a metallic clattering sound that comes from underneath the car. This can be replicated when driving over lane divider dots on a quiet street with the windows down. To investigate, I put the car on ramps and looked around; I was almost certain the sound was coming from a thin aluminum heat shield that is just behind the engine. Tapping this shield made a similar sound to what I heard coming from under the car while driving over bumps and such. The shield is poorly attached with those "fun" push pin fasteners that seem to be liberally deployed all over the undercarriage. I decided to re-attach the shield with a judicious circular application of silicone under each of the holes in the shield and let it dry. The clattering sound I heard previously when tapping the shield was gone. Out for a test drive and still there!
I just had the first service done, and of course the tech couldn't hear it on his test drive. Unfortunately I was pressed for time, so I wasn't able to take a test drive with the tech. I will drive the tech around next time and demonstrate it.
I have a 06' Ranger 2WD with General Grabber tires that have about 30,000 miles on them and still show significant tread remaining.
Within the last 2 months, I have experienced excessive tire noise - like I am driving a Humvee or something. Also, when I turned right or left the tires would make even MORE noise - it seemed to be coming from the right front tire mostly. 2 weeks ago I had the tires rotated and the sound seems to have reduced while turning but I still have the howling Humvee noise while driving down the road. There is no vibration coming from the wheel, so I don't think it's a balancing issue. Could it be the bearings?
I also checked the PSI all around and one tire does have a slow leak but I try to keep to topped off.
After putting my Ford Ranger in park and pressing down on the E-break to get the news-paper or mail. I've noticed that there is a consistent squeaking coming from the back drum brakes when the brake pedal is applied. But only for a certain period of time; then the squeaking stops.
View 8 RepliesSuspension noise I am getting from my 2011 MD.
This noise occurs only over small shock type bumps IE, train tracks that are not smooth, those reflectors in the road, and the metal plates over construction projects. Any bump that forces the suspension over a small vertical or near vertical drop or rise of about one inch.
In my driveway I have a storm grate about an inch lower than the surrounding pavement and it rattles over this every day. Now the fun part.
The noise is ONLY when I hit such a bump with the right side of the car. The left side rolls over the same bumps smoothly and quietly.
This noise is also only present over the small type bumps discussed earlier. My dealer has a rough road that they use to test suspension noises and the car rolls down it silently. The problem also doesn't manifest itself over speed bumps.
The noise is still present while applying the brakes on which makes me doubt its a caliper float issue.
The strut brace and lower control arm/bushings on the right side have been replaced by the dealer under warranty but they can not seem to get to the root of this problem as both these replacements have had no effect.
From inside the car it is very difficult to pinpoint where the noise is coming from but it almost seems like the center of from suspension.
Well, even a supposed Toyota specialist shop couldn't figure it out.
Replaced:
Shocks
Strut Mounts
Inner Tie Rods
Outer Tie Rods
End Links
Engine mount
The ball joints keep passing tests, two different shops swear they're ok.
The road by my house is being repaved, as such, it's really chewed up, and when driving over it, it truly feels like the whole front end of the Prius is going to fall off. It's like the loud, dull, clanging of metal bars.
Every time I am on the road I get this flat noise coming from the front like if the strut was out of air or something like that. It is a very annoying sound and only on certain bumps of the road.
View 6 RepliesI purchased a 1992 F-250 last month. About a week ago I topped off all the fluids (including brake). I was driving it around the day after topping off the fluids and noticed that half the brake reservoir was empty. Topped it off again and did not notice much of a leak at all (I may have done something wrong, not sure what). Parked it and found a small leak in the rear passenger side brake bleeder/cylinder/line (couldn't tell exactly). Took apart the brake and found that the drum and shoes were bad, so Installed new drums, shoes, cylinders, and spring kits in both rear tires.
Started bleeding from the rear right (farthest) until no more bubbles. Went to the left and bled until no more bubbles..... decided to check the right and every time the brakes were pressed, i heard a bubbling/spitting noise (not sure exactly how to explain it) and more small bubbles came out. Went back to the left brake bled again, noticed a few bubbles, but was fine shortly after. What it might be? The brakes seem to be working ok for now though.
The right side brake (problem brake) has a newer line installed. The screw that connects the line to the cylinder seems like it is not in all the way, yet it is snug (I didn't cross threads when I installed it). I'm thinking that air may be being sucked in at the screw and eventually make it through the system... maybe not?
Since I got my Prius V, i have this noise form the suspension... when i go over a bump, or a hole... It sounds like the exhaust is hitting on something. It could be the brakes too. It does not sound like something is broken, but more like a tin sound hitting on something...
If windows are closed the ride is smooth, but when I open i keep hearing this sounds, and its driving me crazy... Is that normal for Prius V because of the different tiers?
My Accord does not have any similar sounds driving on the same road every day... actually ride with Accord is way better... Is that normal, should I go back to dealer? Car is 3000 miles only...
Just purchased a 2010 ls with 20,000 miles on it. Brakes make a popping noise when coming to a stop. Not all the time, seem to get worse as brakes get hot. Have had to dealer twice they have resurfaced rotor, bled system put new pads. Still have noise my service manager opened a trouble in the lexus system and called Atlanta. They said this is characteristic of this car. I drove a couple of other ls cars and did not hear the noise. Not sure where this is going to end up. I saw where the brake actuators where changed on the 07,08 and 09.
View 14 RepliesSo I replaced the front strut and the popping is still there. When I removed the old strut it seemed like that would be the problem as there isn't any play in the ball joints and tie rod end.
View 12 RepliesI took my 2010 F-150 for brake job and ended up with brake fluid in intake!! How that happened?
View 12 RepliesI have a 1997 F150, 4X4. My mechanic says its time for new brakes and was curious if it would be worth possibly converting from drum brakes to disc brakes??
My mechanic has quoted me $300 to do the rear brakes, would it be worth the extra money to convert??? I really don't care for drum brakes. I have done a search on the internet and every time it brings up the issue with the parking brake.
When I am slowing down and lightly pressing on the brakes and around 18mph or lower i hear a tick-tick-tick-tick noise , sounds like a roulette wheel from a casino war game in vegas coming to a stop, from the left front side..what could this be? .
View 2 RepliesOur 2010 Prius has about 57K miles on it (mostly highway and rural commuting). The rear brakes just started to make some noise the other day at low speeds. It sounds like a light metallic squeal, similar to a brake pad wear indicator. It only occurs at low speeds and in reverse. Last time I checked the pads, they had lots of life, but that was in the spring.
I'd like to take apart the brakes to service them, but I don't know if this is a DIYer job on a Pruis. I have tons of experience on auto repairs, and have done hundreds of brake jobs (I also perform auto restoration as a hobby and have done almost every type of mechanical work on a car). So I am not really worried about my skill, but I am worried about knowing the proper procedure to do the repairs on a Pruis.
Today was the second time I have walked into the garage and heard my Prius making a weird noise. It's not the noise that comes from the front when you open the door or press the brakes....It's coming from the rear of the car. It stops when I press the start button. I made a video of the noise (nothing to see, as it was dark in the garage, but you can hear the noise.
My concern is that it's something running that will wear down my battery if I happen to not notice it is doing it sometime in the future.
I have had my certified 2010 Prius II, not two because it is a 2010 and 2010 used uppercase roman numerals for model designation, with 82000 miles about 3 months and sometimes when I apply the brakes I hear a high pitched whirring noise. I think the closest thing to compare it to would be a skill saw but not that loud.
View 2 RepliesI have a 2010 F250 King Ranch FX4. I have an odd problem that I am trying to get to the bottom of. We went on a 2,500 mile road trip last year and I noticed on the way home my steering wheel had worked it's way off center counter-clockwise at a perfect diagonal. I had gotten an alignment right before we left and it was perfect center at that point.
I took it back in when I got home and had a tire rotation and another alignment. Within a week the wheel was off again to the same degree, counter-clockwise at a perfect diagonal.
Two weeks ago... tired and annoyed of driving like this, I crawled under the truck and adjusted the steering wheel to center via the drag link adjustment. I tightened everything down tight and this lasted all of three days.
Wat would cause this? Tires are wearing normally, alignment checks out and it tracks straight. I do see some grease like leakage where the pitman arm meets the top of the drag link and again have some small grease where the drag link connect to the passenger side tire. I lifted the front end and tried to move/wiggle the tires and I have no movement... everything is solid. The truck never wanders when on the road... steering wheel is just off.
Truck only has 90k on it of highway miles and an easy life thus far. I am not hard on the truck.
I had been hearing bang noise from my front suspension at certain times like when reversing car and applying brakes. It was happening since I bought my car and every time I have complained about it to local VW service guys, I was told by them that they cannot replicate the noise so there is nothing wrong. I even told them to have a look at front suspension bushings but again they said everything is fine.
Last week I went for 45.000KM Service and I complained about the same issue again and luckily this time service advisor heard the noise himself. Next day, they called me to inform that my front lower arm bushings needs to be replaced, front brake pads and discs, and front wheel bearings as well. In my response I told them that bushings were bad for long time and no one figured it out earlier and due to this my front brake discs had abnormal wear along with the wheel bearings.
I am still trying to relate that it is technically possible for brake discs at least to wear off earlier if the suspension bushings are bad as when you apply brakes, the brake discs are stressed heavily as the bushing are not absorbing any stress.
I would like to have thoughts on this matter. Just let me know if my understanding is correct or it does not makes any sense and technically would not be proved.
Just to let you know that it is 3.2 4motion model. My driving is average within 120 KM speed and never hit any potholes etc. Plus my brake pads indicator never went on.
I have a 2002 explorer 2wd. I am trying to find an answer for this thumping noise as I accelerate. My first thought was a tire. I took them to be checked and had one replaced but all are good and less than 5k miles on them. I feel it in the pedals and in the steering wheel. The repetitive sound increasing with speed. I have, in the last 2 weeks, changed front rotors and pads with no difference in sound but good brakes now. And today replaced the drivers side upper ball joint and the front ds wheel hub assy. And no difference. What may be the problem?
View 1 RepliesHave 2005 excursion. Just did ball joints , wheel bearings all of them, axle joints and seals. Also warn manual hubs. Have a intermittent scraping grinding noise sounds like driver but could be both front.4wd works fine in high or low, no vibration just this annoying noise. took brakes apart and no funny wear or foreign object in dust shield.
