I only notice this when I back the car from the garage and come to a stop before going forward. It is a very metallic clunk. It sounds like its coming from the rear passenger side but I am. not 100% certain. It happens when I actually stop before switching to drive.
It is a 2013 Two. 30,000 miles on it.
Just recently got a 2011 Prius II and i love it. Only having one issue. Sometimes when i hit a bump with the windows open, i get a metallic clunking noise, but if i hit a bump immediately after it, I don't hear it again. Maybe 5 minutes or so later (not exact at all), If i hit another bump it will happen again. Seems to be on both sides of the car. Car has 5k miles so I'll be bringing in for service next week. Does this sound normal or is it something i need to have looked at?
View 13 RepliesOver the last few months I've noticed a clunking/rattling in the front end somewhere -- probably started at around 60,000 miles. I've considered T-SB-0300-08, but it can range from a clunk-noise to a metallic clunk-noise, and is often felt on smallish bumps. Sometimes I can feel a knock in the steering wheel, especially at very low speeds. I get the distinct feeling that the front wheels might be wobbling a bit as things clunk going over small bumps. Predominantly a left-side thing, but not exclusively.

Will not let me parallel park or reverse park now. I tried to reset the settings but maybe I don't know how to "save" settings.
View 5 RepliesI've started noticing this only when she's cold and I have to back out of the garage in the morning. I generally wait 5-10 seconds after I start the engine before going into reverse but lately I've noticed a muffled metallic 'pank' coming from the engine compartment when the reverse gear engages. I can't say I feel any 'thump' to go with it and I'm racking my brain to see if this is a new development and I have a possible transmission issue or if it's been there all along and I never noticed.
View 31 RepliesI have a 13 Altima and have been hearing a clunk/pop sound when coming to a stop and sometimes when changing from park to drive and park to reverse. It seems to also be there when accelerating too and the car is also seem to be vibrating when moving at lower speeds. Today i noticed something else. I parked the car and took the key out. I went to the side of the car and slowly rocked it back and forth and started to hear this clunk sound. I have uploaded it to youtube and can be found here [URL].... . After hearing the sound, I decided to take the driver wheel off and noticed it makes the same sound when i move the tires. It seems to be coming from the CV joint, where it connects to the transmission. why would a car make that clunk sound with the car/key off and swayed back and fourth? does this seem like a CV joint issue or something related to the transmission.
View 3 RepliesIs this a bug? I hit the start button, everything comes on, put on my seatbelt, etc... then I shift into reverse (out of park) and it says I must start in park. But it's already started. I then have to hit the start button to turn everything off, then hit it again to turn anything on. How to avoid this?
View 12 RepliesIt only really happens when the car has not been warmed up, like first thing in the morning. Aside from the noise, the car shifts and drives normally. Noise just developed, 28k on the car, it is a 2012 elantra. As I shift from P to R while backing out of my garage there is a metallic clink/ping as the transmission engages.
It is not a CLUNK sounds, it is deff more on the side of a metallic clink...
My brother-in-law asked me about his 2010 Hyundai Santa Fe. It has an automatic transmission, that's where the problem is. Several times recently it doesn't want to go into reverse or park. Shifts fine, fluid fine, no smell or noises. Vehicle has about 68,000 miles on it.
View 1 RepliesI bought a 2010 V8 Explorer on Monday and aside from the apparent "known issue" with the hard 2-1 shift (which I'm trying to get it to "unlearn" by driving differently), it's a really nice truck.
When I shift into reverse it says "Park Aid On/Off" in the display, and sure enough, it beeps when I get close to something. That said, there aren't the normal "dots" in the bumper that I normally associate with backup sensors.
Everything works just fine with it, I just am a guy who likes to know how things work and I don't see anything on the outside that would indicate it's a parking sensor.
For a few months now I have been hearing a tap clunk type noise coming from under the car when I shift the auto trans into drive and reverse. Also sometimes when the car is slowing when driving I hear the tap sound as it shifts into first. I drove in by my local dealer and they listened to it and said Elantra transmissions can get noisy there is nothing wrong. They told me I have plenty of Warranty left so if something happens I will be covered.
View 2 RepliesFirst time Lexus and RX350 owner. Not familiar with the new type of shift gear. When I shifted the gear from Park to Reverse straight down instead of moving to the right first, the vehicle would jerk and make a thud sound. Not sure if this would have damaged anything. After I have get used to moving the gear to the right first before shifting down, I would still sometimes have this jerk/thud. But if I do the whole shift movement (shift the right first) real quick then the chance of getting the jerk/thud is much less. Is it a manufacture defect or just I am not doing it properly?
View 5 RepliesI have an Elantra 2012 sedan GL and last year i tried installing HID's. It worked for a whole but then it stopped after. I learned that it wasn't getting enough power so then yesterday I bought a wiring kit to be able to wire my HID to tap to the battery to get more power. Everything was fine till I got to work but when I had to leave work., there was an issue. Whenever i switch the gear from park to drive or reverse or neutral. My car seems to jerk. And when I'm driving and it changes gears, it also jerks. Kind of the same thing how if your driving a manual car and you change gears wrong. This happens when my lights are off. But when i turn them on it then stops. And when i turn it back of it doesn't do it anymore.
View 5 RepliesI have recently noticed a vibration that occurs at VERY low speed - such as below 0mph and 1mph, while just starting (or stopping).
The best way to describe this vibration is that it feels somewhat similar to going over a rumble-strip - but not quite so intense.
It only happens for a very short time while just starting off (or coming to a stop) - and then goes away. You almost have to try to make it happen. If I try to carefully control the increase of the car's speed, I can -sort of- extend the amount of time that this happens.
I certainly have to be on the 'look out' to notice this and attempt to make it happen to really identify it. Otherwise, (if I accelerate too quickly i.e.: normally) it just feels like a couple of bumps in the road.
I think I read on here somewhere something about a breakdown of the winding insulation that provides such an effect? Is there any straightforward way (perhaps with a scan gauge or other tool) to conclusively diagnose this?
Every bump, slow or fast from left or right side of the car there is an obvious metallic clunk or rattling sound.
View 19 RepliesI had my brakes done almost two weeks ago and last week I noticed a metallic sounding clunk front right (I think) when I went over a bump. It's hard to replicate but I've heard it a few times. On the weekend I reversed and heard that same clunk. When I went forward slowly, I could hear a sound that can only be described as a few screws in a rotating soda can. When I sped up, all sounds disappeared.
I took it to my tech yesterday on the way home. He found a bit of a loose fit between the new caliper and what it attaches to, which he fixed. However, the sound persists. Tech said all suspension components seem tight and normal.
For some time now, probably the past 3-years my 05 V8 has made this clunk/jolt when stopping the car on level surface. It very faint, but noticeable. When the car is in S, it doesn't happen. When stopping on a hill, it doesn't happen.

View 2 RepliesWhenever I take off from a stop or slow to a stop, there's a clunk in the drivetrain. It feels like a bit of play before the drivetrain engages and when it releases...torque converter maybe? Taking to the tranny shop soon...
View 10 RepliesI had heard clunking when hard accelerating or hard stopping my 2003 Explorer, also heard it from Park to Reverse/Drive. I suspected u-joints, was correct, those were replaced.
After I received my car back I noticed the clunk was louder when hard accelerating or hard stopping; again from Park to Reverse/Drive. I suspected rear differential. I called my mechanic who said they noticed some play in the rear end - a little loose, that the noise would be noticeable...but that if it were him he wouldn't worry about it. He said the drive shaft was tight, that I wasn't in danger of it falling out, etc.
These are the only symptoms I have that something is wrong with the SUV. Just that clunk. If I come off slow from a stop and not hit the gas, there is no clunk. If I do not hard stop, again I can avoid the clunk. The vehicle does not vibrate or make noise on the freeway, shifts well between gears.
I was going to have my mechanic open the rear end up and see what needed to be replaced when the cold weather brakes. In the meantime, is there anything I need to be keeping an eye on, or something else I should check? My mechanic said the checked it over and couldn't find any other problems. I just want to be prepared for expenses.
It's a 2W, not 4WD. I had all the fluids done, a drain and refill on rear. Not sure if that's important to know or not.
I just replaced a 2005 with a 2012. The 2005 was dead quite during slow movement and parking while the 2012 hums. At first I thought the hum was a rubbing noise but on closer listen it sounds like a metallic harmonic vibration. It reminds me of the sound of rubbed crystal glass except lower in tone with metallic undertones. It is audible from outside the car or when the windows are down. It does not appear to be associated with movement as it comes and goes during the three point manuever required to park under the carport. Is this is normal or I am heading back to the dealer?
