Prius (2010-12) :: Master Warning Sign Lit Up When Switching The Car Off
Sep 8, 2012
I got a 2010 Prius. I noticed that when I turn the car OFF , the master warning sign (yellow triangle with an exclamation mark) and a message in Japanese (which I cannot read) appear for a few seconds. I don't see the warning when switching the car ON, or while driving. I experienced this frequently when switching the power OFF. Why this happens?

After oil change today, I see this blinking red sigh. I can't find this sign in the manual. Toyota is closed today.

We were driving 2015 450h with 2200 miles on a slight downhill grade about 50 mph. Suddenly ABS warning light, master warning light, and audible warning activated. The center console "Brake" illuminated and the information center displayed "check hybrid system".
My wife attempted to pull the car off the road in a controlled manner but even slightly touching the brakes caused them to pulse, braking hard and then releasing. She finally got the car to the side of the road and shut the engine off. I then got into the drivers seat and turned the car on. The messages remained. Tried on an off, still the same. Tried brakes, the seemed functional. Since we were in a location that did not have cell service and it was an unsafe location to leave the car managed to drive it into nearest town.
Turned the car on and off about 10 times over the period of an hour. Without explanation, the car started with no warning messages. Dove the car another 200 miles since and it has now been at he dealer for over a day with no word.
I did see where a few RX350 models had reported a similar problem, but no 450h's. At the time of the incident we were not using the PCS system (off) . I am wondering about that as well since the ABS might be tied into the PCS?

In my one-owner purchased-new 2005 Prius w/ 74K miles and w/ no maintenance/accident history other than doing all scheduled maintenances at Toyota Dealers along w/ recalls applicable at each time (other than we had Toyota replace the 12V battery last year just because I knew it would die at some point anyway and I don't like pushing my luck; I'm not 100% certain if there's been a recall on any water pump for this car and if so, don't believe the dealer has mentioned it), I have the following indicators which appeared all at once while I was driving along at around 45 MPH in no unusual circumstances (80F, dry afternoon, about 30 minutes into a trip of mixed speeds, no loads in the vehicle, no effect on the car while driving):
From Left to Right on the display:
1) Red Triangle - Master Warning Light
2) Orange (Symbol)CHECK - Malfunction Indicator Lamp
3) Orange (!) - Brake Warning Light (but it didn't highlight the word 'Brake' in red)
4) Orange VSC - Vehicle Stability Control Warning Light
On the Screen:
Orange Car w/ the ! symbol - Hybrid System Warning Light
We immediately aimed for the house (about 5 miles away); the car drove perfectly fine, with the engine stopping and starting at lights as needed, with speeds going from the 55MPH we were traveling at the time of the alarms down to 0 and back up thru 35/45 MPH and such per normal off-interstate driving. The battery currently shows all the blue bars, and the engine and hybrid systems showed charge/discharge as usual as we drove. There was no discernible change in the driving reaction of the car to brake, steering, accelerator, etc.

I was driving earlier today and it flashed twice (about a second and a half each), and then didn't see it again for a few hours. I was going about 40 MPH at the time.
I was driving somewhere else today and when I got to the 70MPH mark (really, between 60-70), it objectively increased in frequency. I searched google and these forums, and the closest thread I can find that shares my ailments was this one:

So the other day my girlfriend got in her car and it had the master warning light on. we took it to the dealer and now they are saying it is something with the transmission and it would be cheaper to just install a new one. Another thing is how could it be the transmission if i drove it over to the dealer and head no problem with the gears changing, but he also said something about a voltage leak.

When I start my car the master warning light comes on with all the other lights and then goes off with the other lights. It does not come back on while driving and there is no warning sound with it. This just start happening. It never came on with other lights when first starting it up. I have a 2009 Prius.

Details: 2009 Prius with Nav, no touring, cold battery voltage reading (via display) is 12.1v and 14.2v running
I'm noticing something odd and I figured I'd ask and see if this is normal or something else. Sometimes on startup I see the red triangle then it goes away and sometimes it doesn't show up at all. I've had a few occasions where the car doesn't start. I usually shut the lights off and then it's OK.

Purchased the car several months ago and have done all maintenance and the car is overall flawless but I believe it to contain the original 12V battery.

Title says it all. Occasionally when I try to start my 2007 Prius (70k miles), the master warning light along with the brake, ABS, and VSC warning lights all come on. I'll turn my car off and then turn it back on and it will start right away.
One thing that I notice is that it seems like the headlights and/or the MFD is dimmer than usual when this happens. I'll turn off the headlights, turn on the car, wait for it to start, and then turn on the headlights and everything will work correctly.

2001 Prius, 182,000 miles... Master Warning Light and brake light came on.....
I took it to the local dealer and they did a diagnostic, and they pulled the codes P0300, P3125, P0301, P0302, P0420, P3006, P3016, P3017. They said I would need to replace the the hybrid battery, the inverter, the catalytic converter, and the spark plugs.

This is the second time this has happened in the past few weeks. Each time at first start in the morning. Each time temperatures had been in the mid-20's (F) overnight.
Push start button and it seems as if electrical systems "sort of" come on -- there is a low hum of some sort, but the little light in the power button stays a dull orange and the Master Warning triangle as well as several other lights on the dashboard come on (Traction/VSI and some more, I don't remember).
Gas engine def. NOT running. I then hit power to turn off the car and nothing happens. Still "running" although really not, other than some electrical humming. Can't shift into anything (Reverse, Drive, etal).

Today i tried to start my 07 Prius, all the normal start up lights came on, including the master warning light, but the master warning light didn't go off. No other abnormal lights were on. When i put the car in reverse to back out, it wouldn't engage in the gear, it wouldn't back up. When tried to turn it off, it wouldn't respond to the power button, it wouldn't go off. I kept trying and eventually it did turn off.
The other thing that wasn't normal was, with the power off, when i opened the door, from the outside to get in, or from the inside to get out, the car started making the warning beep with the red car door open light flashing. Close the door and it stopped.
I have hardly been driving the car since the end of June, i take it out about once a week to keep the battery charged, and it's been working fine. However, about a month and a half ago, i accidentally left the overhead light on and it was on for a few days, and then the battery would not start the car. Auto Club came out and jumped it and since then, it starts OK

Recently bought a 02 with 34 K, had been well maintained. Last night it wouldn't start so hubby jumped it (properly). Started right away, making him think that wasn't what it needed. Right after that, the Master Warning light came on, the Car with Exclamation Point in it (hybrid system warning light) and the check engine light. The car runs, but it did die, and I had to restart the car, then seemed to drive fine. We don't live near a Toyota dealer, would a regular mechanic be able to read the codes properly? What else should we consider? Should we drive the car?

I got this exact warning Monday which is discussed in this thread (linked below) and its problem was a bad inverter water pump while mine seems fine: . Also in the linked thread another whom had gotten the exact warning, but inverter pump was not the problem, believed it meant the Hybrid battery was bad and replaced it. , but mine, at least for now, as discussed below, seems fine.
was about to make a trip, 140 miles, gassed up and when leaving station all these (quoted below) warning lights came on. and the car should have been operating in cold condition still as gas station was only a few miles from home. :
Master Warning Light, Malfunction Indicator, VSC, (!), and Hybrid System Warning on Screen.

It has now come on 3 separate occasions, a week or more apart. Each time the yellow brake or tire light comes on. The next few times they come on together at start up. Then the triangle by itself comes on, does not clear. First time I was driving up hill. Second time I had just hit a drive way riser (not jarring). Today I was driving on a straight level highway and it came on at around 55 MPH.
Battery had been replaced after first instance. The inverter valve replaced too. Now what? It drives normally. Though it is the yellow brake light that accompanies the triangle Toyota says that codes say battery problems.

The master waning light came on while I was commuting on the freeway. There was no MIL. I've seen this a month or so ago and, as before, since nothing seemed wrong, I kept going. The last time this happened the warning went away after a day or so. This time it is sticking around. As before, there seems to be no problem with the car -- 80 mile commute, no loss of power, same gas mileage as before. I have a generic ELM327 OBD reader. I tried reading codes but there were none (at least none that it could read since there was no MIL).
Any second source for the Prius Mini-Scanner (or have one they want to sell)? Or, can a regular OBD scanner be trained to read the special prius codes?

I was diving on the interstate and these lights came on and the car beeped. I checked the tire pressures and now the car will do nothing. It says a problem with park.

I have a 2004 Toyota Prius with 95k that I would like to drive to work everyday. Only problem is that after the car warms up(2-3 minutes of driving), whenever I gas the car to go the Master Warning Light comes on, and as long as I'm gassing it stays on followed up by a picture of the oil lamp comes up.
Now if you stop accelerating than it goes off and comes right back on when you start accelerating. I'm new to these Prius. I checked the engine oil level and it is almost full. I took the car to the shop and all they said was that the transmission was overfilled.(but they did not drain the fluid to bring the transmission oil down.) Is it possible that the oil picture on the top left of the Navi display is caused from overfilled transmission fluid?
