I hear this loud grunt noise coming from engine area or brake area at random times, not all the time. I can feel the grunt, sounds bad.
1. Coming to a complete stop hard, grunt.
2. After shutting car off, stepping out of the car and 3sec later GRUNT.
3. Idling sometimes it grunts out of no where.
Are brake noises normal for the 2010 Prius? I often hear little grunts or barks when I push on the brake - sounds like air or gas. Should I take it in or ignore it?
View 19 RepliesMy girlfriend and I just bought a 2011 a few weeks ago. We test drove it a couple times ourselves, and had our mechanic take a look at it and drive it also. Everything looked and sounded good. Not sure how much it matters, but it's a Certified Used as well.
A couple days ago, returning from a 45-minute drive which included some short stretches of gravel road, I noticed an oscillating sound. It's definitely not a noise that was there when we bought the car. Unfortunately, my cell is apparently bad at capturing audio, so hopefully my description will be enough.
The noise is very faint, almost inaudible, at low speeds. Between 30 and 35 mph it gets much louder, peaking at about 33. There's some vibration through the accelerator pedal also. Above 35, it fades pretty quickly and I can't really hear it at 50. The sound itself is 3 beats on, 1 beat off, about every second. There's a slight difference in pitch between each beat.
If that isn't enough to go on, let me know and I'll give the recording another shot and upload it if the noise is audible.
I have a 2013 Prius with 41K Miles. When I turn on the car I can hear the Air Conditioner Fan (my opinion) a bit louder than normal. I know it's the A/C Fan because when I turn off the A/C the sound goes away. It makes a weird Zoom sound, but louder than my previous cars and my wife's car.

View 3 RepliesTwice in the last month, my 2010 Prius has made this incredibly loud noise when the engine first started up. The noise continues for a minute or two, and then stops. The car then runs as normal. I brought the car to my dealer, who after a brief looking-over could find no reason for it. I shot a video of the car making the sound the 2nd time it happened and brought it to the dealership with me to play for the mechanic. No one who heard it there ever heard anything like it before.
It has been really cold here this winter, so "cold oil" was once thought, but was dismissed as unlikely. The car gets 0-20 oil.
We're having problem with our Prius where car suddenly started to make weird clunking noise from the engine (28k miles, 2011 Prius). Car sounds unsafe to drive around, so I left it parked in the drive way. I did check engine oil level and it was at F level.

Yesterday morning it was a rainy and damp weather around 3-4 degrees Celsius when I started my Prius. Usually I start it up, get out and have a cigarette or something before driving so that the ICE has a minute or two to warm up. Immediately after the ICE fired up I heard a very loud clanking and vibrating sound. I immediately shut the car down, checked all fluid levels and read the codes. No codes, no warning lights. Fired it up again, same thing. This time I opened the hood and went to see what's going on. The ICE made this noise and vibrated like hell. After a few second though the clanking and vibrating slowly went away and it started to sound normal again.
Scared the living crap out of me! This hasn't happen before or since. I had like 2-3 40km drive cycles after that on the same day with no problems. The day before I had to move the car just a bit, and when doing that the ICE came on just before I turned the car off. No codes, no warning lights. First thing that comes to mind was a misfire that vibrated the engine like crazy, maybe due to the damp weather effecting spark plugs or a flooded cylinder that was due to the only a few seconds of engine running the day before.
I am hearing a really strange "groaning" or grunt noise right after the engine turns over. The colder is the louder it is. It only lasts about a second. It's only when the engine is cold.

View 5 RepliesTwice during the 6 months that we have owned our 2010 Prius, a loud clattering noise from under the hood occurred upon startup. After shutting it down and restarting, all was normal. It sounded like an engine that was getting ready to throw a connecting rod. The dealer could find nothing wrong and when I contacted Toyota's hot line, they were clueless as well. One service writer suggested the ABS as the source, but I've owned 5 other cars with ABS and never heard anything like it.
View 2 RepliesSo my 2012 plugin was parked for about 3 days, and when I turned it on, heard loud knocking and the check engine light came and stayed on.
When switching the car on or off, I'll hear two taps/ticks that were not there before. Loud knocking is not there now.
What can the issue be? It was very cold and snowing.
I got in the car today and started it... I was waiting a few seconds for someone to get in the car (it was in the garage) and as soon as the engine kicked on there was a very very large long rattle noise i immediately turned the car off. Waited again and turned it on same noise.. the only thing I found was a cover under the car towards the front was really loose. ( I haven't hit bottom or anything while driving) but I did have the lighted door sills just installed the other day. But it never made that noise..
btw i have 1100 miles on it..I looked under it and is the black dust protector thing supposed to be loose like if I push on it I can make it rattle..
Ok so I replaced my upper strut mount and my struts in the front along with the shocks in the rear.......... the squeak is still present when i go over a rougher bump and it is cold ..................SO i went on hma service and saw this...................
Symptom "Squeak or grunt-noise from the front suspension, occurs more in cold ambient temperatures-more noticeable over rough roads or when turning"
Suspect Area "Front stabilizer bar"
Remedy "Under these conditions, the noise is acceptable."
Wow so not acceptable i am going to try and lubricate this piece... Will report back

Since the weather has dropped a little I was wondering if it's normal that the car sitting on in the drive way, on, would idle up a little just before shut down. I mean shutdown to use the battery not shut down turn the car off. It idles fine for the warm up stage then just before it shuts down to be available for ev mode it spins up a little.
View 4 RepliesFor the past few months I've been hearing a loud fan-like buzzing noise coming from the passenger side of the front of the car. I don't know that much about cars, but it almost sounds like the engine is racing or something is spinning too fast. It has gotten increasingly worse, and seems especially loud at high speeds on the highway.
It is not the heating/cooling fan - the noise is present when the heating/cooling system is turned off.
I have a 96 ranger with the l4. Right before I bought my newish truck last December, it's started miss firing and running really bad. I replaced the spark plug wires, most of the spark plugs, and both coil packs. Didn't work at all. Then I bought my new truck and parked. Fast forward to now. Fired it up, ran REALLY bad. We changed the wiring order from the 96 order to the 99 order.
But the truck idles from 500rpm (barely running) and randomly jumps up to 2-3000rpm and then back down. Driving it has NO power, rev it and it stays at 2-3000 for quite awhile. Sometimes it randomly dies. REALLY need to get it running quick and cheap. Getting ready to sell my daily driver to find something else and I need something to drive while I hunt for another truck.

View 11 RepliesI have a 2013 Prius with approximately 23000 miles on it. The TPMS randomly comes on flashes for a minute then goes Solid for about 10 minutes. On an average trip of about 100 miles or so it will go 3 or 4 times. I've taken it to Toyota to have them look at it, and they kept telling me that they couldn't find anything wrong and it has probably has something to do either with my tire pressure or my tire tread. I just did my 20K service appointment and they tried to tell me the same thing. after going back and forth with the maintenance tech, he finally admitted that the only hook up the car to the diagnostic machine when the light is actually on. After back and forth discussion I finally convince the maintenance tech to keep the car and drive it for a distance so they can see the light come on. The manual says if the TPMS starts flashing to have it looked at. But the problem is that the dealer won't work on it unless the light is actually on which is next to impossible since I'm always on the road when it happens. Has this TPMS issue ever happened to any other Prius owner?

Sometimes touching the plastic around the "trip/display" button will do it. But I've kept my hands clearly away from the buttons and seen the displays turn on several times in a few miles. Other times the symptom is dormant for most of a city trip.
I have a 2012 Prius V station wagon and randomly when working in the garage I hear the car's rear fan?? come on and not shut off. I have to start the car in accessory mode or turning it actually on and then off again for it to stop.
