My wife's 2010 Prius IV died on the highway at 65 mph; just shut down at speed and would not restart. She had it towed to the dealer and there it's been now for 5 weeks! The tow truck operator was able to drive up on the flat bed using EV, but no engine. Dealer says it's the inverter which has a nationwide backorder and no ETA.
View 9 RepliesI have a 2011 Toyota tacoma with 35k miles. Yesterday while driving at about 70-75mph on the freeway with no warning the vehicle shut down and the engine light came on. It made a clunk about the the time it shut off, it wasn't very loud but I could feel it. I'n not sure if that noise was just the vehicle powering down or transmission kicking from the change in torque? I pulled off the freeway, there were no fluids leaking, serpentine belt was in place. The truck will turn over but not start. The check engine light flashes rapidly.

When I pull the car out of the garage it's obvious when the ICE starts. But after that I never am aware of the starter being used at all.
Is it just road noise that prevents me from hearing it? Or is it like a manual transmission car that you restart by letting out the clutch once it's rolling?
For those of you that own both a TCH and a 2010 Prius I have a question for you. My commute is only 6-7 miles to work and currently I am getting approximate 45mpg displayed on the mfd. I think I read somewhere that the display calculations may be a little high but all in all I am very happy with my mpg. I am considering trading my 09 TCH for a 2011 or possibly 2010 Prius if the price is right. Anyway If I accelerate my 09 TCH to approximately 41 mph and take my foot off the accelerator, when the car speed slows to about 38 to 37 mph the engine will shut down. I can now lightly push the accelerator to drive along just using the battery. If on a flat road or a slight down hill grade I can even pick up speed and get to about 41 mph before the engine starts back up. My question is how does the Prius work the same way? What are the speeds for the Prius?
View 16 RepliesI got home from work today and pressed the power button to shut the car off and the car completely died (door locks and open door dinger worked) and would not restart after multiple attempts. The dash was completely dead. I waited a couple minutes and it started just fine like normal. I went straight to the dealership that does the maintenance to have them look at it and the service manager pretty much told me that they couldn't find anything wrong with it. I have since started, driven and turned it off a few times since without any problem, differences from normal, or warning lights. This is the first time anything has ever acted up after 98500 miles.

Still I am having the same problem, the car can only re-start 30 minutes or more after I shut it off. The mechanic stated that he does not know what it is causing the problem.

I currently have a 06 camry se v6 3.3 3mz-fe with an electrical issue. Here is the list of issues
1. whenever I draw power to do anything after the car is started some things restart it self or shut off then slowly come back on. For EX if I am driving and apply the brakes the radio shuts off and/or the gauges reset (like I am turning off the car and re inserting the key).
2. if I roll all the windows up at the same time same thing as above.
3. if the radio is too loud same thing
4. everything inside the vehicle is dimmer then before.
while this is happening the engine is still running and never shuts off only electrical stuff shuts on and off.
this is what is electrical aftermarket on the car that I have changed

I have also done the following
disconnected all of the above (so no lights, radio, interior lights)
replaced the alternator (twice, the first was a DOA from autozone and now I fear that the second one is going bad because its not charging @14.??v anymore im lucky if it charges at 13.6)
checked all my grounds under the hood and trunk
checked all fuses and relays that I can find
charged the battery even when it tested good but was low at 12.1v
checked all of the wire harnesses under the hood for shorts or exposed wires
I have done almost everything but strip the entire car down to shell and inspect the whole harness and behind the dash, which I don't have the time to do. I have been trying to solve this issue for a month now and its not getting better its getting worst so I make the last step and take it down to the dealer.
I have a 2010 Prius. In the last few months, the radio has started acting strangely.
Sometimes it will increase I speed when you speed up and slow down when you slow down. And play normally when at a stand still. Sometimes it locks up, you can not change the volume or station. Sometimes it does not work at all. Other times it works just fine.
When I called the dealership, they will only replace the radio and not investigate the issue. Replacement could cost 300-400.
My 1998 Acura RL just shut off while entering the garage. The engine shut off, and the battery and engine lights remained on. An attempt to restart the car without taking the key out of the ignition did not work (no sound). Taking the key out of the ignition and restarting it worked like normal.
Occasionally the car makes a loud sound right after starting, which resembled a cross between a honk and a grinding sound. I'm not sure if this is related.
I would rather the car not stop mid-drive on a busy street or the highway.
I drive a 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix. Yesterday, I drove to the store about 5 minutes away. When I went back to my car 10 minutes later, it wouldn't start. Wouldn't turn over, no clicking, just silence. Finally had to leave it there. When I came back 1 1/2 hours later, it started fine. Same thing happened to me this morning. Drove it 5 minutes, now it won't start. What could it be?
View 3 RepliesTwo weeks ago, my husband and I drove about 90 minutes to a nearby mountain for some snowshoeing. Everything with the car was fine, until we stopped (for about 5 minutes), after which the car BARELY started. When it was time to go home, the same thing happen, and the battery light was on (not the hybrid battery, but just the regular battery). Since the car was running, mostly, and it was Saturday afternoon, we decided to try to make it home. Since the battery wasn't charging, one by one, all the electrical systems shut down, starting with the wipers and ending with the fuel pump. We drifted to a stop on the side of the road.
AAA came and jumped us, which not only got us going but seemed to have solved the problem. The battery tested fine, and Honda ran tests on the car for 3 hours and couldn't find anything wrong. However, we're clearly nervous about taking the car out of town. There was a similar incident a couple months ago, but not nearly as severe - the batter started charging again on it's own after just a couple minutes.
I have a 1990 buick lesabre motor is a 3800 and it runs fine until the motor warms up and then when i shut it off it won't restart for about an hour after i shut it off. It's not over heating it has a new fuel pump.
View 4 RepliesI have a 2003 Elantra 2.0 with no spark, no codes... anymore. The car was driven about 6 miles, shut off, went back out to start it, it ran for 10 seconds then shut down. Now it will not restart.
What I did: As per some of the advice of others I replaced the crank sensor, cam sensor, ignition coil, check compression, pulled codes from the ecu with one being a crank sensor. I have power at the fuel pump during crank, i can smell gas during crank, plugs are dry just no spark. Timing belt and timing are fine, engine sounds as it should during crank but no spark. There is power at the coils, crank and cam sensors. MIL is on when key is turned and goes off during crank.
The problem I'm having is it starts fine in the morning but when I shut it off it it takes about an hour to start back up ..
View 8 RepliesTwo wheel drive, small engine with two spark plugs per cylinder...clutch with five speed transmission. Over two hundred thousand miles on it. Drove it thirty miles on a rainy evening. Shut it off for about one hour and when I tried to restart, it just went click. Got towed thirty miles home. Replaced starter with brand new one and also new battery. Still nothing but click-click. Does start from clutch engagement when rolling. The trouble seems to be somewhere between the starter and the battery. What to do?
View 3 RepliesMy 1997 Olds 88 (3800) runs beautifully but has a mysterious stalling problem. I can drive a few miles and the car will just shut down while driving. I can drive 300+ miles and have no problem at all however this problem does not seem limited to short trips only. Sometimes it will fire up right after stalling and other times i have to wait for hours before it will start again. I replaced the ignition control module and the problem persisted. Just yesterday I had the fuel pump replaced and new lines put in. I brought the car home yesterday and it ran fine but last night it would not start. I just brought it back to the shop today. I have heard people talk about a crank sensor maybe being the problem. I am sick of this guessing game. It is costing me a fortune. It's a great car...when it is running. Only 89,000 miles!
View 2 RepliesI've got an 06 F150, 5.4l crew cab lariat. So to start, I had a programmer screw up my ECU, so when I got it re programmed at ford, everything works except for the ABS sensors. I recently had someone break into my truck and broke my stereo when they couldn't get it out. So I was driving home from work the other day and lost my whole instrument cluster, windows wouldn't roll up or down, wipers worked very slowly until not at all. shut off the truck and wouldn't restart. I jumped it and started it. ran fine. with the exception of the previous problems. I noticed when it got dark out that my my taillights and head lights were on very dimly with the switch off. Also hearing a clicking sound coming from under the truck, at the back of the cab and front of the bed. the only thing electric that's back there is the fuel pump (i believe). I am at a complete loss.

When i backup and about to start going the steering wheel get stuck, the steering wheel light came on the dash, and the radio shut down and restart by itself. It happened really quick about 5-8s and then everything back to normal, the steering wheel light is gone as well. I doubt the electric has problem, but i am unsure.

For over the last year I have had a problem where if you start the car and then shut it off before it fully warms up it will be very hard to restart and barely run till you get it out and run it on the highway for awhile. First noticed this when starting car to back out of driveway to get into attic. Went to restart to put back in garage and car would hardly start. Had to dealer a couple of times and they said you should warm car up before using. That sounds good but is not practical and car never had this problem when new.
