Prius (2010-12) :: Jerking Sensation When The Car Switches From Gas To Electric
Apr 12, 2016
My car has around 160k miles on it and for the past 30k miles (give or take) I have had a jerking sensation when the car switches from gas to electric. It is a stronger jerk at low speeds and more like a shimmy at 40-50 mph. It has progressively gotten worse with time, I mean it's by all means drivable but I have been trying to figure out what could be wrong before it has to be replaced and I'm on the side of the road.

I bought my 2006 Prius used and I had just put it over 100,000 miles. The dearlership has replaced the HV battery under warranty and suggest that I replace a slightly leaking waterpump and cracked belt, said nothing about the transmission.
My concern is, my transmission. When the car switches from electric to the gas engine, the car jumps a little bit, and it's an obvious and not smooth shift. And when I put it in Park, the vehicle rocks back and forth a bit, shifting a few inches before coming to a still position. Is this standard with other 2006 Prius? I drove my friends 2007 Prius and the shift seems smooth and it doesnt rock when you put it in park. Should I be concerned and if so what should I do?

I notice when I put the car in Power Mode and take off from a standing start, I get a distinctive bumping sensation in the drive train. It almost feels like the flywheel dampener is bottoming. This happens when, less than a moderate throttle input.

I notice my Prius sometimes turns-off the engine & runs pure EV when cruising at 40-45 miles/hour. Sometimes for a few miles! That seems very inefficient vs. taking power directly from the engine:
- Gasoline--->burn---> transmission--->wheels
- 1 state transition (chemical-to-mechanical)
- Gasoline--->burn--->transmission--->generator--->store in battery--->extract from battery--->motor--->wheels
- 5 state transitions

OK maybe not 20 switches yet but I'm sure by the time I'm done I'll end up with 20 or more switches.

Does the gen 3 prius use electric motor only when in reverse? Reason I'm asking is that, I was in reverse and didn't see a rock that prevented me to move and keep pressing on the gas pedal and got no response and throttle response was zero even on the HSI screen. Had to move forward and back to reverse to gain momentum to go over the rock. Just a weird feeling knowing that the gas motor didn't even kick in even when pressing on the gas pedal.

Got our 2012 package 5 lesss than a month ago, so we haven't had much opportunity to use the rear defroster. The two times I have used it I noticed that it works well on the upper rear window, but the glass below the rear spoiler doesn't seem to be clearing. The red/orange "wires" are visible in the glass, but don't appear to do anything. Wasn't planning to head back to the dealer until first service since we haven't had any other problems, but this could be annoying with the winter weather.

Just walked by the back end of my new Prius III and heard what sounded like a electric motor running from the general area of the exhaust pipe at the right rear end of the car. This was about 5 hours after I last drove it.

Yesterday, at 8000 ft in the Arizona mtns, my 2010 Prius exhibited some strange behaviors. For several minutes the gas pedal was non responsive in the first half of it's travel, then it would lurch ahead in a jerky manner unlike it's normal behavior.
It seemed like the electric motor was not being engaged. It also seemed stuck in ECO mode. Pushing the economy mode button would not disengage economy mode. If I stepped hard on the pedal it would go, but not very well. After heading down the mountain to a lower elevation seemed to work.

Car: 2014 Prius, basic model
Symptom: Only rear left electric window and electric lock are not working. They are not responding to driver side control or remote key control. Electronics on other 3 doors function normally.

After the car is parked for a while, when you open the driver side door or just touch the door handle an electric motor starts running. After several seconds it stops. Sounds as though it is running a pump and building pressure or vacuum. Just wondering exactly what it is?

I wanted to know what do you use to clean the interior of your GX? For example the wood, the chrome parts, the display, the plastic around the door switches? I am using the Meguiars Gold Leather spray for the leather which is doing a decent job, but I don't know what's best for the dashboard and the other parts.

I've a 2004 Prius. Had it for 3 years. 40,000 miles. No problems what-so-ever. 55 to 60mpg without any effort.
During the winter I noticed that when the petrol engine switched off - there was a jolt. (It used to be totally imperceptible.) Nothing drastic - I have to be on smooth tarmac to notice.
My Toyota dealer said this sometimes happens in cold weather. However, the weather has warmed up - and I can still feel the jolt.
Don't know if it's connected, by the central display diagnostic check tells me...

I have a 2010 Jeep Patriot and recently it has started to jerk as I am accelerating. When I get to about 2200-2500 RPM the engine feels like I have completely let off the gas and then put my foot back down on it. Once it showed the Electronic Throttle Control warning light but I have not seen that light again in the past month or so. Originally I thought it might be the spark plugs, but I have changed those and seen no improvement. What could be wrong???

Even though my climate control system is not in auto mode, it still has a mind of its own. When I run my a/c, the airflow intensity level changes, and the system switches to defrost about every 5 minutes or so (even when there is absolutely no need for defrost). I continually have to set the system back to my comfort level. What causes this, and how do I fix it?

My transmission started jerking into 2nd and out of 2nd when it shifts. It only has 20k miles on it and has not been driven hard at all. I heard of some people doing resets on the transmission,.
