Prius (2010-12) :: Hybrid System Failure After Cooling System Repair?
Apr 5, 2015
Two weeks ago a large, industrial truck dropped a piece of bent steel pipe on the interstate in front of my 2010, 50k miles, Prius and (sadly) I was forced to hit or swerve into rush hour traffic and cause an accident. It tore up a good part of the cooling system and did some body damage. Of course I didn't know this at the time, but it began to overheat, so I pulled off the freeway and had it towed to a body shop. After about ten days, I got my Prius back.

2010 Toyota Prius III with just under 60,000 miles. The car has been serviced at Toyota from day one (by us and by the previous owners) and runs like a champ. Well, did.
Last week while driving home from running errands the Check Hybrid System light came on for my wife. The car was still running so she drove it home for me to look at. I hopped in and noticed the gasoline engine wasn't turning on. I took it for a spin and even when I floored the car the gas engine wouldn't turn on. Since the nearest dealership is 15 highway miles away I knew we weren't going to make it there on electric power so I had it towed.
The Toyota dealership called me the next day saying when they started the car the light was gone and the car ran fine. They did some troubleshooting and found nothing wrong. They said it might have been a glitch and to come get the car. Not even 3 hours later the light turns on again. Again the gasoline engine goes silent, but this time I didn't even make it a mile and the electric power shuts off as well! We coasted to a stop and had to have the car towed again. This happened out of nowhere and could have been a very serious safety situation had it not happened on the road we were on.
This time the Toyota dealership had a little more to say. They said that their diagnosis has determined that the inverter is shot and they will have to order a new one. They said this failure is extremely rare (the service guy I spoke with had never seen this issue).

The other day, I was driving my 2006 Prius on I-20 in Shreveport. As I came off the exit and approached route 80, my navigation display read "PROBLEM", and the car suddenly coasted to a stop. All of this occurred in about 100 feet, so I was lucky to be able to coast the car to the shoulder, because it just died where it stopped. If this had happened while I was on the highway, my whole family would have probably been killed, as there was no way we would have been able to safely get out of the way of the multitude of semi trucks that drive that road.
I attempted to re-start the car, and the red triangle warning appeared on the display, along with the little car with the exclamation point in the middle of it, otherwise known as the hybrid system warning icon. Needless to say, the car would not turn over.
I immediately called Toyota to see if they had any info to get the car going. Toyota was absolutely useless, and the customer service agent said the only recall showing on my model was a floor mat recall. I told him that I knew he was only doing his job, but it was a shame Toyota actually believes Americans are stupid enough to believe the floor mats are the problem. Luckily, we had AAA, so the car was towed home, after a two hour wait.
Diagnostics : I checked all fuses and relays, checked battery connections, and saw no apparent problems.

2006 Toyota Prius, bought new in Oct 2006, currently at 90,000 miles.
It just recently broke down on me about a month ago, the dashboard lit up like a Christmas tree with every possible light flashing and nav screen showing "problem." I took it to the Toyota dealership and they determined it was a hybrid system fail and replaced the battery.
After this, I'm thinking all is well. I go out of town this past weekend 130 miles away from where I live and day 2 into vacation my dashboard lights up again! Same lights, flashing red triangle, Vsc, check engine, etc. it gets me back to my hotel but the next morning the engine won't start. At least the first time it broke down the cars engine worked and was somewhat drivable.

My wife was driving our 2009 prius this morning. she said the red triangle, this other yellow circled, light with an ! came on plus in the display window the car icon with the ! came on. Manual states that this is a hybrid system failure.
On very cold mornings the car smells very hot for a period of time. She said this happened again.
I tried to do a reset (turning it off and on atleast 4 times) did not work. So I had it towed to a dealer tonight and I started it again and this time very hot smelling and a whole lot more lights were on, ( brakes lights, almost all of the lights I would say.)

Actually 2 very similar questions about my Prius 2007.
1. My water pump was replaced by a dealer due to failure some half a year ago at 95,000 miles. Yesterday, after oil change (98,000), I was told it is recommended to replace engine coolant. Does this sound right? Don't they change coolant when replacing the pump?!
2. Identical question about HV pump. It was replaced at 80,000. Now they recommend do change the coolant for hybrid system. Don't they have to do it when replacing the pump?
I want to do everything necessary to maintain the car. But don't want to spend money for something that is not needed.

I just bought a used 2012 Toyota Prius iTech from a country town 3 hours away. About an hour into the drive home, the display informed me to "Check Hybrid System" and then "Check PCS System". The car continued to function for a little while, then eventually lost acceleration, so I pulled over. I turned it off and on again; the warning light remained but the car started and continued to work, but soon after I lost acceleration again. This happened one more time.
Then I Googled the problem and discovered that you could "turn it off and on again three times to reset the computer". I did this and the problem disappeared and did not resurface for the remainder of the trip, and has not happened again since.

I heard that you could place a flat screwdriver between the upper radiator hose and the end of radiator. Is this procedure really work?

Navigation system fails to read DVD when it heats up on my Prius IV. Works fine when cold at start up or when air conditioner is running in warm weather. Now that it is cold outside and a heater is necessary, it will intermittently fail to read the DVD. This is an updated DVD. The old DVD had no problems but I have since dumped it. Do I need to replace the new DVD?

my 2010 Prius III was working fine yesterday, but today when I try to start it it did not start. no green or abmer light on the push-start button. I tried few times, but no luck. I got the key from my pocket and got it closer to the push start button and I start hear the normal noise that happen when I opn the door, but the noise was very low and the internal light was very dimmed as if the battery dying. after few attempt to start, the car start at last, but the hubird screen where show the system on the dashboard was off. I try to change the display of the hybrid system but nothing start. the GPS screen display "no DVD MAP inserted" and seem frozen and not allow me to turn off the screen or press any other button.

Just started up my car and the "Check Hybrid warning system" came on, along with a check engine light. The car starts and moves, but I'm unsure if I should drive it to the dealer two miles away without doing any further damage to the vehicle or have it towed. The car has 130000 miles and is serviced every 5000 at the dealer with all recommended maintenance performed.

I have a 2013 Prius Persona with about 5,300 miles on the vehicle. Just recently had the 5,000 mile service taken care of at a local toyota dealership. The very next day I tried to start my vehicle with no prevail. My instrument panel indicates "check hybrid system" (!) the car will not start, nor will it shift into drive or reverse, only into the neutral position. Made several attempts to turn vehicle on and off and tried to jump start. Still no luck. Had the car towed back to the dealership. Mechanics are still trying to identify the problem. What may be the cause?

Searched for threads about this error message, didn't find much substantive except 'check your gas cap'.

I drove it couple of time every things was fine ( see the video) now nothing comes on. After the wreck I had to jump every time I wanted to start, but now nothing even after multiple jumping attempt, the battery used to die because the brake like always stays on and as soon as I start the car the horn keeps on being non stop.

I cleaned out hybrid battery cooling fan today, not too bad after 160K . However, as I test drove prius the Triangle of death and "Check Hybrid System" message pops up.
Drove 13 miles back home, battery charged good. No power consumption data given on hud. Rechecked fan connection and looked over area. All looked good. I dont think ICE was running during drive home. Tested 12 volt=good. Disconnected 12 volt and orange plug. Reconnected. System reboots and seems Ice goes through warm up. Even put in power mode and it roars. Scratching head on this. Coincedence or maybe I should have disconnected 12volt before disconnecting cooling fan?

I have a failure on the evap system of my 2002 Escape, and need the proper testing procedure for this particular purge valve. I was able to fix the purge valve on my 2013 Explorer, with no issue, but the Escape has a different type and I'm not sure I'm testing it properly. I want to verify the purge valve is working properly instead of just throwing parts into it. I know it is likely either the valve or the gas cap, but it could be something other than those two items, so I want to get the simple stuff checked out first.

Just got a "Check hybrid system" message and the triangle of death is on my 2010 Prius -- but I can still drive it...
Toyota's Emergency Response Guide says this error is triggering by the ground fault monitor that is connected to the 12v aux battery.
HV battery pack ( HV battery fuse, two 12v relay)
HV battery inverter/converter

I brought my 2012 Prius in on St. Patrick's Day for routine scheduled maintenance and was informed about the recall--I hadn't even known yet. I was told it would just take an additional 45 minutes for the software update--no big deal. Except that it was.
They said the computer that was hooked up to my car crashed during the update, and my car computer would no longer recognize the hybrid system. They had no explanation for the crash and said their computer had a full battery, etc. so it didn't make sense, but they would call Toyota to find out way to do and in the meanwhile I would have a rental.
It is April 7 and I still have the rental. They said the part needed, a new computer, is on backorder. They hope it will be in by the end of April but there are no guarantees.

Bought a used Prius 2010 last december, Now the hybrid system is shut down and the assumption is that the hybrid battery is the culprit. No codes has been read out of the system but the car has passed 330 000 km so I guess that's very plausible. Have found a used battery from a 2009 prius who the local Toyota service facility says is compatible.
