Prius (2010-12) :: How To Turn Off Traction Control
Jan 1, 2016
Is there a way to turn off Traction Control on a 2012 Prius? It's not useful when trying to break a path thru heavy wet snow. I've looked in the Owners Manual, but so far haven't found a description of deactivating Traction Control.

So four lanes, divided, with a left turn lane, five lanes at the intersection. I'm down ~15 mph, maximum turn speed and one car is just clearing intersection and and +100 yards from next approaching slug of traffic. Keeping the speed, I make the left turn confident no problem then halfway through turn:
feels like a soft tuck
traction light flashes
already to straighten out
everything normal
This is the second time I've seen this in a year. Pavement dry, 48 hours since last rain; ~8:00 AM so rush hour is on. Before doing some parking lot tests, any clue about how to replicate?
My dashcam SD card did not play.

I bought a 3rd Gen Prius 2012, I found that the Traction Control is already disabled, (the light is on in the led panel in the dashboard) and I want to turn it on for safety, I live in region with regular temperature and it never snow. So how to turn it on again.

On Friday, the traction control light turned on (with no sound) and stayed on while driving, stopped and parked. I brought it to my local dealership to check and see what was wrong. I was informed that the steering angle sensor circuit went bad. I asked if the car could drive fine without the repair and was told it would be okay. I also asked if this error light could be turned off and was informed that it was impossible. I went home and parked. Sunday night, I noticed that none of the interior lights would work.

My 2011 Prius has the abs light and traction control light on. The car has sat 4 days I go and start it and the lights are on. Not blinking steady. I just filled the car Friday could it be the gas cap not tight?

I had not driven the Prius in a few weeks, and even then, that was for less than five miles, and had the low tire pressure indicator come on late last week when the temperatures cooled down, which I fully expected given my opportunities with the Toyota Dealer properly inflating tires. We were away for another week and returned today and I decided to check the tires and add air, and in addition to the tire pressure indicator, the ABS, Traction Control, and Brake Indicator lights were on. As soon as I filled all the tires to the specified PSI, that indicator disappeared but the brake related ones all stayed on.

I slammed on my brakes the other day because a car pulled out in front of me. When i let off the brakes i noticed the car did not move for a good 1-2 seconds and a traction control light was flashing. I didn't think much of it until i was sitting at a light and decided to see what happens if i press my brake pedals in hard again... the traction light turns on again and the car doesn't move when brakes are disengaged for a few seconds. Is this normal? It feels like my hill assist on the BMW. Why the traction light turns on? My car is a 2010 Prius III with 5k miles.

I am not sure if they are related or if they happened at the same time but my wife said her heater/ac fan wasn't working. So I figured it was a fuse, but after visually checking all the fuses and I mean all, none appear to be blown. After checking all the fuses I turned the car on, only to find out I put a couple fuses in the wrong locations and re-installed according to the diagram on the back of the cover. Turned car back on and heater fan as expected did not turn on. Then I noticed the Trac light on, not blinking or beeping just "on". After looking on the forums and web this means that it is turned off. If it is just off how do you turn it back on?

Started my 2010 Prius the other day and the traction control, brake light, abs light and a yellow Astrix light came on and wouldn't go off. The car drives and handles just fine, brakes feel normal. I have tried resetting the lights with a trick with a paper clip someone else posted, but it didn't work for me.

My traction control light comes on sporadically when I am stopped at a light. Roads are dry and I have not hit anything. What is going on?

Tonight I needed to stop at a red light. The distance to the light was on the short side, so I braked somewhat firmly - but not hard like a panic stop. The road was dry but somewhat bumpy (I think it had some patches across it from some digging that'd been going on.) But it wasn't so bumpy that you wouldn't just drive normally on it. When I braked, the car kept on going. I saw the traction control light come on, and eventually the car stopped at the light. But if there'd been another car ahead of me, this might not have ended well.

I just drove my Prius through 8-10 inches of heavy wet snow. The car did amazingly well. At times my traction control light was on when trying to get up an incline until the car got going. Then when I got home I stopped in my driveway for the garage door to open and started into the garage. The car was stuck, but then the light came on and the car climbed the driveway in about 10-15 seconds and made it in the garage. I then noticed a smell like burning tires. Maybe it was the tires from spinning. I hope that I didn't hurt my transmission or another component. Does the Prius protect itself if it is stuck and the traction control light is on from overheating something? I think I recall that the 2nd generation Prius would not allow for wheel spin to protect the traction battery.

Evertime I turn left the brake light, traction control and stability control lights come on and the car starts dinging. Mechanic says it could be front wheel bearings because they are tied to the ABS system??? But I have been seeing alot about wheel speed sensors?
Second, everytime I brake suddenly, a cloud of smoke comes from the front end and there is a burning oil smell. The oil is fine and no leaks. Again mechanic says it could be a cracked CV boot throwing grease?
Lastly everytime I put in reverse or when I lightly put pressure on the brakes when driving I get this noise like a humming (errrrrrr) noise. Its not the grinding/squealing noise you would get when brake pads needs replaced. I only have 60k miles on this.

My 2010 Subaru Outback recently surprised the hell out of me by simultaneously turning on the brake warning light, the traction control light, the check engine light and (just for a bonus!) disabled my cruise control while flashing the cruise control light. I pulled over, quickly surmising that all of those systems could not have failed at 70 MPH without instantaneous death to either me or the vehicle. Both apparently still being alive, I tried turning the car on an off to reset the lights. No go. Subaru was not going to miss this chance to get me to the dealership! (who I had avoided to this point!) As I was far away from home and the car being very healthy, it seemed, I decided to drive on. I proceeded to put a couple of hundred more miles on the car before I got back to town.
My car had 39,000 miles on it, 3,000 miles beyond the warranty end. I learned that I have an error code of P0171, "Fuel Trim Malfunction (Air/Fuel too lean)". So I guess I'm wondering about a few things...why would this sensor set off every light on my dashboard and disable my cruise control? Seems a bit overblown for running a bit lean. My gut tells me Subaru has a sensor/software problem they are not owning up to. I'm a big fan of conspiracy theories and this really smells like one...
Second, jeez, I'm only 3K miles over warranty, don't you think they'd cut me some slack. I mean I love my Subaru, or did anyway, until this happened. Now it's just another POS car that breaks for no apparent reason...

I read about traction control and people having problem in the winter. Here is what the problem. Good tiers will grip when you have snow condition, but what about ice? I don’t care how well your tiers are, how much money you paid, or how highly recommend it, if you on ice and traction control kicks in you are done.
If you get enough speed going through icy snow then no problem, plow right through it, but if in the icy snow traction control kicks in your tiers just stop spinning until it get the grip!, but it can’t because you on ice!
How to turn traction control off? If I’m correct that before 2010 traction control option was optional and now it’s a standard. There few videos on how to turn it off on hybrids, does that mean it will work the same on not hybrid?

I took my Avalon to get Dyno'd to see if module I foolishly bought actually provided any horsepower gains. Much to my dismay, I could not Dyno the car without the module because the traction control wouldn't allow, seeing as the rear wheels were not moving. Apparently, there is no switch for the traction control, but is there another way to disengage it...?

My daughter just had a new front tire put on her Audi A6 AWD, 2001 car and now her traction control will not turn on. I've been told that being it is all wheel drive that the tires need to have the same wear and that all tire will need to be replaced to prevent damage.

My car has the "trac off" button on the left side of the steering wheel by your knees. When I push the button at a stop (park, neutral or drive) the "trac off" light does not illuminate on the dash. If I press and hold it for three seconds, the VSC off light also does not illuminate on the dash.
I read the manual (page 174) and I'm doing exactly what it says to turn it off but its not working. Whats going on here?

Is it ok to turn off traction control all the time? will it make me slide around more in wet conditions? will it affect fuel economy?
