How do you remove the top steering column cover? This is the plastic piece immediately toward the front of the car from the steering wheel. It covers the steering column and is not part of the steering wheel. Part number is 45286-47040-C0 and the parts breakdown doesn't show any fasteners, it probably has some tabs that need to be released, but where?
View 2 RepliesSometimes my steering wheel squeaks. It sounds like plastic rubbing against plastic. The first dealership said the compartment under the steering wheel was rubbing against the column or something inside and that they made an adjustment and the sound stopped. It didn't. The second dealership told me they couldn't figure it out unless they heard the sound. Since it's not every time I drive, sure enough it made no noise at the dealership that day. The head of the shop looked into it and couldn't figure it out. He dry-lubed behind the steering wheel to get to a spring back there. He did the same for where the steering column comes into the car at the bottom of the car. Good for a few days. Squeaking back today.

I purchased new tires for my Camry at a mileage of about 70,000 (~11/2015). I do mostly city driving. A few months ago I sometimes started noticing a steering column shudder upon braking when traveling at higher speeds (~50+ mph). I read on the web that this type of shudder is typically caused by warped rotors.
I was considering getting a front brake job (new rotors + pads), but decided to get a tire balance/rotation. It was reported that the right front tire was out of balance and that now all four tires are in balance. After the Balance/Rotation, the problem was still there but not as bad (Shudder reduced by at least 50% over what was experienced before the balance/rotation).
I went to a brake shop and discussed the problem and they said that they suspect that there may still be a problem with proper tire balancing. They recommended a second opinion on whether or not the tires were properly balanced. They did not explain 'second opinion' so I went to where the tires were balanced two weeks earlier (Discount Tire) and they did a free balance check and reported that all four tires are still balanced.
Basically, I have no detectable shudder at less than ~50 mph. All rotors and pads are the original ones that came with the car when it was new.
I recently bought the PriusLock and I just cannot figure out how to remove the lower dashboard cover. I remove the 2 screws as directed but cannot seem to get the lower cover to come lose ? Would like to know if there is something else like a tab that I have to press or release before the cover will come lose. My husband and I have tried "yanking" it pretty hard and it's still not working.
I have a 2008 prius with smart key system (not sure if the smart key system changes anything as far as the installation goes).

I have had my 2010 GS450h for a few months now and about a month after I bought it, I noticed a faint rattle from the steering column, almost like there is a loose bolt or something. It is getting more noticeable (especially on broken pavement/rough roads) It's annoying and the only issue I have with the car.

View 4 RepliesI brought our 2010 Rx450h to the dealership several months ago due to an occasional clicking noise in the upper steering column, behind the steering wheel area. The repetitive clicking was most noticeable at slower speeds while turning the steering wheel.
The dealership had the car for about 3 days saying it was a loose cable and then told me when I picked up the car, that sound was the way it was supposed to be, part of the electric assist steering. So the clicking noise continued.
Now the steering is getting stiffer. Some days much stiffer. This happens more when turning the wheel slowly.
When I go over a rough gravel road, there is a rattle that is definitely in the steering column. How is this fixed? Is it a simple tightening of something? My Prius is a 2006 with 180,000 miles.
View 4 RepliesMy steering wheel has a squeak when turning either left or right slightly from center.. I usually notice the squeak while stationary or parking. It's louder and more noticeable when it's hot outside.
Listening carefully, it seems to be coming from inside the steering column, not from linkages or joints from under the car. Looking for a exploded diagram of the steering column components, perhaps it's just a U joint (tilt?) that needs some lubing to make it quiet.
i need to get to the wires but cant do it looking through the small hole for the fuse box.

The footwell cover just below the steering wheel appears to have hinges at its bottom so I'm thinking the top merely snaps into place but I've found no literature referencing that. I've pulled what I felt was a safe amount with no release and I don't want to damage the cover if I'm wrong on my assumption. I can't see any screws to remove but I'm just not sure, what does it take to remove?
I've got the Bentley repair manual but it skips by this as it's not worth referencing going straight to the cover behind it.
