How the synergy drive is working. Why when coming down on a long down hill (mountain pass for example) the car stays at high RPM ? That usually happens when battery is charge to its MAX of 80%.
View 19 RepliesTwice now, while going downhill hill (steep grade on freeway) my Prius has revved up to over 4,000 RPMs with the cruise control set at approximately 65 mph. The noise of the engine was my tipoff and I immediately had to turn the cruise control off. This just doesn't make sense to me! Seems like this could be a potential problem for those of us utilizing cruise control!!!
View 15 RepliesI think that the EV indicator works very strangely on my 2015 Prius. Consider this: I'm driving downhill at 40mph and the EV indicator is on. As my speed increases (coasting the whole way - using neither the accelerator nor the breaks) and crosses 46mph, the EV indicator goes out. Why? I saw somewhere in the forums that 47mph is too fast for the motor-generator, and so it switches off --- but my real-time mpg indicator still shows 100mpg, which wouldn't seem to be the case if the Internal Combustion Engine has just kicked in. Why the EV indicator goes out? Should I even care?

One of the features I really like over the '06 Prius is the ability of the cruise control to hold the set speed on downhills (until the battery fills up and it switches to compression braking "B" mode, but that's a different topic).
After taking it in for the 10K mile service, it no longer engages regenerative braking on downhills with cruise control set. This is on the same hills where previously it would hold speed.
Did Toyota do a software upgrade that disables this feature?
Traveling downhill, with no throttle input. The car is regenerating power as I coast down the hill. I hear the engine turn on and rev up. I glance at the Scangauge and see RPM is at 3045 or so. MPG is still 9999 and SOC is 77.
View 13 RepliesCuriosity question. I've noticed that on a downhill of a couple miles, especially in "braking" mode or with the cruise control on, the motor/generator and engine are used to keep the speed down and the battery gets charged to the very top quite quickly. That's good!
On a really long downhill, will the motor/generator still be used for braking and the excess electricity discarded to keep from overcharging the battery?
Why my 2010 Prius has 3 times now failed to stop when brakes were applied on a steep downhill in slight rain? Happened a year apart with no slick road and with tires both new and old. I pull up to a stop sign on a grade, apply brakes, the car slows, then there are metallic noises and the car glides 3-4 feet before stopping. I'm lucky no car or person was in front of me. Honestly not a skid at all. Service tells me I don't know about anti-lock brakes but I've driven with them on cars for many years with nothing like this.
View 2 RepliesI have purchased a 2010 III Prius with 73K miles last week after my 2006, everything is fine for me but I have a scary problem , the engine sound is very high while driving even after enough warming up, specially when the ECO meter reaches the PWR area or when accelerating hardly, I tried changing the engine oil with synthetic 0W-20 and the filter and the sound still the same.

- Its winter here and temp is 50F.
- The car was imported from the US,
- The speed in the video in KM/h.
- I am using clean OCTANE 95 fuel.
- The video was after driving 20 Miles.
- I have latest version of Techstream with original Mongoose MFC...
Had a first-time issue with my car today. Background, 2010 II bought in June, just short of 15K miles, never had any kind of mechanical issue.
While en route to work this morning, I was about halfway into my 15 minute drive to work, when I noticed my engine was idling very high, I would guess 2500 rpms. It started doing it while I was driving around 35 MPH, then continued doing it while I stopped at a traffic light, and continued when I continued driving to a speed around 50 MPH. The high idle while stopped was not transferred to the wheels, so it was not a safety issue as it would be in other cars.
When I got back up to 50, curious to try something, I hit the ECO mode button and the car returned to normal. I took ECO back off and the car was still fine. I had no further problems.
I would point out that this morning was about the coldest temp that the car has experienced. Outside temp ranged from 7 to 10 degrees.
Do the dsg Transsmissions have something built in, when you go down hill the rpm shoots at 3k'ish rpm. It's like when you down shift if you were driving stick. Soon as I went flat road went back to normal. Is this normal??
View 6 RepliesMy Prius just reached 200000 km this week. I bought it at 180000 km 2 years ago, I don't drive it that much simply because I work from home.
Today, a sunny day, 0 degrees, the check engine just lit-up. I opened the hood and checked fluid levels, all OK. I started it and listened to the engine, running as usual. However, when the motor stopped (hybrid ON), I can hear a high frequency noise. I don't remember hearing this noise, but I don't think I ever opened the hood with the engine Off but powered On.
How can I get the check engine code ? I assume I need a connector, right ?
I Locked Differentials and put DAC on, but still car was Skidding while going downhill . Do I have to select any other options that will work with this skidding issue?

I've noticed a buzzing noise coming from the front of the car whenever I coast downhill. Almost sounds like an off-tune radio. Noise gets louder as the car picks up speed, and becomes quieter as I brake. What can it be? I think I was in 3rd gear.
I have no speed control going downhill with CC at all. Dealer says this is normal. I've had two other Lexus GS models and when going downhill they would downshift and use the engine to maintain a constant speed. My Mercedes does the same thing when going downhill it downshifts to maintain a relatively constant speed. Is this normal with the RX? if so, what a disappointment.

Also RX is certified pre owned warranty for another 30k miles and I want to do alignment on it but not sure if warranty will cover that ?

I oberseved that when I step on the brake to slow down, the RPM jumps from 2000 to 4000 all of a sudden and stay there for a few second. Without my foot on the brake, the tachometer stays around 2000 rpm. Is it normal? Why does the engine do this?
View 3 RepliesI am a first time Toyota car owner. I bought a 2010 Toyota Corolla LE this past Saturday. It has only 42,000 miles on it, and I got a pretty decent deal on it! I'm still getting used to how the car drives, but it seems to be running great. The only thing I notice sometimes is that I am coasting downhill (not using the brakes) I notice a bit of a vibration sound coming from what sounds like the back windshield. If it keeps occurring, I might take it to the dealer for them to check it out. With my luck, the issue might not even happen though with them there.
View 4 Replies2005 Ford Escape, 4-cylinder with ~75,000 miles. I experience engine misfire when driving on the highway after 1+ hours that only occurs when I'm going DOWNHILL. The misfire will last between 36-41 seconds and then goes back to operating fine. Doesn't occur on every downhill and doesn't occur on steep downhills during in-town driving. The diagnostics always show the error for cylinders 1 and 4. The following repairs have been made:
Replaced all 4 spark plugs and ignition coils, replaced fuel filter, fuel injectors cleaned and tested showing no concerns.
Misfires reoccur during next long drive 6 months later, compression test performed and failed. All four fuel injectors replaced and one connector replaced.
Misfires reoccurred again during next long drive 4 months later.
I am stumped as to why the problem keeps happening, why it only occurs when going downhill, and why it seems to last for a fairly consistent length of time.
I have noticed a couple times now on my Automatic S that the engine keeps revving an additional 1,000 - 2,000 rpms when I am braking going down a hill. Is this normal? It doesn't occur on flat roads or going uphill, but only downhill. It's almost as if it downshifts when I brake. Not sure if this is normal or not, but it just didn't feel right.
View 3 Repliesi just picked up my prius from the autobody shop after a small bumper humper[ some clown ran a red light hit the wife ] car looks good but get in it and the fan is stuck on high even though i have tried to change everything . should i disconnect the battery to try to reset or just take it to the stealer to have them look at it.
