Prius (2010-12) Fuel :: Calculating MPG When Tire Size Changes?

Sep 20, 2012

How the Prius calculates mpg based on miles driven then I need to create a formula that allows us to determine mpg when you change tire size.

We know the GenIII speedo reads between 1-2mph too fast but the ECU will continue to read exactly 2mph too fast despite tire size changes as verified by Scangauge and Torque app. So what is your mpg based on? Readings from the odometer, speedometer or something else?

If you change tire size then your miles driven is going to be altered. It's either going to be more accurate or less accurate depending on how this information is derived. If the miles driven is altered then so will be your mpg reading.

Prius (2010-12) Fuel :: Changing Tire Size Effect On MPG / Handling / Traction?

My original Yokohama avid s33 is about ready to be changed. It now have over 42k on them. I think I can still stretch it before the winter starts. My OEM size are 195/65/15 and I'm thinking of getting the 205/65/15. According to Tire Dimensions Made Simple - Discount Tire my tire rotation will decrease by over 16 revs per mile. I know the side wall is going to be about a quarter an inch higher about an inch and a half bigger in circumference And the car is going to sit half an inch higher and a wider Width.

Looking for observation/s pertaining to performance, mpg, handling, traction, etc.

Prius (2004-09) :: Larger Tire Size Causing Instability?

Is it true that a going from the OEM tire on the genII prius to larger 195/60/15 can cause or increase instability issues. I would think the point is to have wider tires to improve the stability...

Prius (2010-12) Fuel :: MPG Loss After Tire Rotation?

I drove for a couple days last week and got 60+ mpg (city, well known commute, amenable for pulse&glide). I rotated tires (or rather wheels) this weekend with unchanged tire pressure (~44psi). Today I only got 50 mpg on the very same commute. Is this just a coincident?

Prius (2010-12) Fuel :: Will Tire Rotation Affect MPG?

Well, after the October snow storm where it took me 6 hours and alot of sliding around to get home, I decided to get all season tires with good snow traction. I picked up the Hankook Optimo H727 and had them installed at Walmart on 11/21/2011. Right away, my MPG dropped significantly.

Prius (2004-09) :: Tire Size Causing Traction Control To Improperly Engage?

I've recently started to have issues where when I get up over 55/60 mph the traction control will engage and limit the acceleration of my 2009 prius. I took the car into my local Toyota dealership and they claim it is because of the size tire I have.

I recently purchased a set of Hankook Optimo H727 replacement tires. After having done my research (mostly on these forums) I decided to go with the P195/60R15 tire size. Now I have several reasons to believe that the dealership has misdiagnosed the issue:

1. There are loads of people on this site who have installed 195 size tires (and larger) without issue as far as I can tell.
2. The issue did not begin immediately after installing the new tires, but rather a couple months later.
3. My brother installed the same exact tires on his 2005 Prius and does a lot more freeway driving than I do and has not had an issue.
4. My understanding from reading here is that in some other countries Priuses come with 195 size tires stock.

Corolla / Matrix 2009-13 :: 2010 LE Not Calculating Average MPG Correctly

Basically, I think my Corolla isn't calculating the MPG correctly. I had to take my car for some major body repairs. When I got it back, most of my settings on the radio and speedometer were reset (time, radio's tremble and bass).

Anyway, before all this body work, it was at 27.7 MPG. My daily route changed. I used to go on a 13-15 mile commute 4-5 days a week. It wasn't a highway, but still a straight road with 4-5 stop lights. I would get 28 MPG, which I think is the max city average for my model.

Then after the change, it started going down. My routes were more quick (probably no more than 6 miles), but I still had the 4-5 stops basically. So I understand this slight drop in average MPG (28 to 27.7).

However, after the body work, the MPG average must have reset. B/c when I checked it, it was at 20 MPG. Which is very odd. I would have noticed if I was burning that much fuel. I don't think that is correct.

And I think the problem is that my average MPG will actually go down when I leave my car in park. So.... I tested it. I reset the MPG average. When I went to the store, I drove normally. I got 30 MPG (pretty straight road, 1-2 stops, 3 miles away). When I stopped and put it in park for a few minutes, I noticed it going down by 0.2 about every 15-20 seconds.

Golf V R32 :: Changing Tire Size / Re-calibrating The Odometer?

I am at the point where I am going to change my tires on my wheels. Currently running BBS RC's which are 8x17 ET32 with tires 225/45/17.

For those who are running wheels with such specs or more "exagerated" have you had your odometer recalibrated to respect the new rolling diameter change or not? If yes what was your easiest solution. I know depending on wheel/tire sizes, various factors can be affected including speed indication.

From all the websites I have seen and asked, I am told that I can go as less a 215 wide but not lower than 45 in "thickness" (if I stay in 17).

My objective is to of course remove rubbing during load and go a bit lower and therefore do not know if 215/45/17 will be enough of a change from 225/45/17.

Tires - Hyundai - Sonata :: Changing Tire / Wheel Size

I have a Hyundai Sonata w/ P215/55R17 tires.

I am almost due to get new tires and my husband says that we should switch the wheels and get regular tires, not the lower profile tires that were OEM w/ the vehicle. The current tires are expensive and regular tires would be less expensive in the long run. When I asked at the dealership 6 mos ago they said that it would not be good for the car and would adversely affect the performance. If I do change, what tire size (regular sidewall height) would be appropriate (and less expensive)to change to?

Accent MC (2006-11) :: Different Tire Size On Rear / Front Axle?

When I bought my 2008 accent I had to replace the two front tires in order to pass inspection. I think the garage didn't notice that my rear tires were actually a different size. The entire summer season I had been running two 205/45/16's on the front and two 205/55/16's on the rear.

After the winter I took them to a different garage to take off my winters and they refused to put my summers back on.... is this a major issue to run the 205/55/16's on the rear axle and the 205/45/16's on the front axle? I know they fit but is there a real safety concern or the garage covering their own bases.

Hyundai - Sonata :: 2011 - Same Tire Size But Different Speed Rating?

I have a 2011 Hyundai Sonata GLS with 65k miles...it has a 2.4 liter motor (4 CYL), auto transmission. The car currently has 205-65-R16 tires on it with a 95H speed rating. They all have worn down to the wear bars so it's time for replacement.

On my previous cars, I've always had Uniroyal Tiger Paw touring tires because I love how they ride. I found the same tire size for my Sonata. However it has a different speed rating...95T.

The only difference is the letter "T".

EDIT: It currently has Nexen N5000 tires and I bought the car with these tires already on....crappy tires...worn down in only 30k miles.
