Prius (2010-12) :: Front Brakes Wearing Abnormally Quickly?
Oct 2, 2014
Took my Prius to the local dealer for 50,000 mile service and got a call that both of my front brake pads were worn below the limit and needed replacing. This surprised me as I have read here and elsewhere that some go 100,00+ miles before needed replacement. So I had them replaced and when I went to pick it up, asked them how much was left on the front brakes the last time I was in, which was for my 45,000 service. After looking it up, guy told me they measured 8mm in February, meaning I went from 8mm down to needing to be replaced in the span of like 9 months after driving 5,000 miles. Even the guy at the dealership seemed surprised when we looked it up. Could there be some underlying issue causing abnormally fast break wear? I vaguely remember getting the brakes adjusted related to some TSB in the spring.

At about 25,000 miles I had one of my rear brake pads sticking so had to change the rear brakes. The non-stuck pads on the other side looked decent still, so I'm assuming I'd have gotten quite a few more miles out of them if the one hadn't been sticking. Changed the front pads at about the same time, although they were in pretty good shape still (but it was taken apart already, so did them while it was apart and the chance was there). At about 50,000 miles later the rear pads are again unevenly (and I feel perhaps prematurely?) worn, and the fronts look fine. Is it something with the screw-type e-brake mechanism on the rear disc brake that lends itself to sticking? Or am I just especially unfortunate?

My car has about 37k on it; and while the front pads look to be about 50% worn; the rears look like they are closer to 90%. Is this normal? The car is also sluggish while braking especially when the engine is being auto-revved to keep the system voltage up (a known problem). It also seems that the car will step into ABS lock-up mode too soon in a panic stop situation; which might also indicate that the brake system is biasing too much power to the rears; too little to the fronts.
I've never had a car wear the rear brakes more rapidly than the fronts; usually the rears are much more lightly utilized to reduce the tendency to skid. Is there any way to adjust brake bias? I'm getting ready to change rear pads and flush brake fluid.

I bought a 2002 F250, 2 months ago love the truck drives great for 130000 miles, but the front left steer is making a lot of noise and wearing on the inside edge and like its skipping every couple inches so very noisy thought maybe ball joints but a buddy say tire is out of balance truck does not pull left or right and drives straight...

I have a 02 Prius and the driver's side brakes are wearing twice as fast as the passengers side. Some times if I have to stop quickly the brakes pads continue to apply pressure on the rotor when the brakes are released. After a little drive they seem to go back to normal. Is this a sign of a bad caliper or master cyl.? I know before I purchased the car the front brakes and rotors were done, but they used after market parts

I just had the left front strut replaced by an independent shop. Afterwards they noticed that pressing the brakes after backing up produces a single 'clunk' sound from the front. Not sure if it's from the left or right. Also not sure if it was doing this before the repair and didn't notice, or it just started. It only happens once, although I haven't tried backing up twice in a row.

As the topic line states, would you put some type of coating on the audio/climate remote control to prevent the rubber from wearing out? I can envision if I'm using it frequently, over time, the rubber part is going to wear out.

I almost feel like when I release the gas, the Prius is doing some engine braking. Decelerates too quickly (1 mph per second) when driving at around 65 mph.

I have an 05 Prius with 108k miles I bought about 2 months ago. My commute to work each morning is 1.5 miles with speeds of 25mph or less.
Usually the car has acted the same way each day. The ice spins consistently as I creep along to work. But last night the temps dropped to -10f and this morning when I left for work it was about 3 above. I turned on the car and instead of the few seconds after ready it takes for the ice to turn on it turned on right away today. I let it warm for about 3 minutes then set off. Right away I noticed the ice start to Rev up.
And as I slowly approached 25 MPH it was revving abnormally high. It was showing energy from the ice to the wheels and to the mg and charging the battery which was at the normal state of charge. All blue, right before green. When I stopped at a light about 1 mile in the ice turned off as normal, and started right away as normal. But it seemed the ice was still revving as if it was working very hard to pick up a slow increase in speed.
I pulled into my parking spot, battery showing green state of charge now, and the motor stopped as usual. I do not run the heat on this trip and it takes usually 5 minutes, so I just tough it out.

My rear brakes keep wearing out extremely prematurely (2,000-7,000 mile intervals) and have been for 60,000+ miles. (No joke my mechanic has warrantied the rotors and pads over and over literally like 10 times) its the insides pads of the back that wear down while the outsides and front are fine...is the proportioning valve causing this problem or is it something else? We've changed the calipers and brake hosed

The battery in my remote appears to be getting exhausted quickly.
The fist time it happened was in 2014 when batteries on both remotes got spent. (for a 2011, I figured that it was normal).
I picked up a 8 pack from Amazon and replaced batteries on both remotes but the frequency of exhaustion has increased dramatically.

I have a 2007 Passat with 47,000 miles on it. The dealer tells me I need new rear brakes now, but the front brakes have 50% life left in them. When I asked why the rear brakes are wearing out so much faster, he said VW rear brakes always seem to wear out twice as fast. Is this true?

2005 Prius shows a C1241 code, which can mean abnormally high or low positive voltage in the auxiliary battery. In my case it appears to be abnormally high, because my voltmeter showed the battery charged to 18 volts with the car off, and when running it showed 20 volts going to the battery. There's also a POA80 code (hybrid battery pack) but I'm not convinced yet that it's a hybrid battery problem. What would cause the overcharging of the auxiliary battery?

My front tires had previously been wearing out a lot faster on the inside. I was told it was due to the front lower control arms, does this sound right? Is it possible and cost effective to just have the bushings rebuilt (replaced) or will i have to buy new control arms. How can I tell what my car actually needs? I just put 4 new tires on the car and am weary of driving it until i get this fixed.

My budy took his touareg to the dealer today because his front tires are wearing funny (cupping). The dealer said that is normal for the touareg. I am having trouble believing that.

I'm looking to buy an ISF and now I'm reading about the 2IS chassis suffering from front inner tire wear with many attributing it to the soft LCA bushing (see FIG fix) and the factory alignment. Most of the reports seem to be focused on the 2008-2010 ISFs and I see little about 2011+ owners reporting this issue. It's my understanding that the 2011+ front springs are slightly taller/higher and a different rate. Did this possibility (inadvertently) correct the front inner tire wear issue?
I had a 2003 G35 and front inner tire wear plagued that car too and it was annoying and no real fix available. It had the same exact suspension setup on ALL components. We didn't smoke through the inner rubber tread, but rather it feathered like and if you didn't stay on top of it, your G/Z would sound and feel like a dump truck after about 10-15K miles because of the feathering.
I'm looking at 2012-2014 ISFs and I would check and correct the alignment if necessary. I know FIG makes a replacement bushing, but it's urethane and after about 20 years of modding cars, I've learned that urethane is best left to race cars. After about 5K miles, urethane needs regreasing and almost always leads to squeaking/clunking as the urethane loosens up after a year or two.

Today as I was adding pressure to my tires I noticed the front brake pads were wearing unevenly. Both outer pads wore the same. More "meat" on the inner section of pads than on the outer, evenly worn, just sort of slanted down as you move out towards the outer rim of the brake disk.
Is this normal? What would cause this? Should I have it looked at? I've never seen anything but even pad wear, perfectly parallel to the brake disk.
Edit for these pictures to clarify.....

i have noticed that my front tires are wearing quicker on the inside. that is to say they don't seem to be wearing evenly. have almost no tread left on the insides of front tires and these tires only have about 13000 mi on them. is this and aligment problem? dealer says no.
