Prius (2010-12) :: Engine Starts Up For Few Seconds Then Shuts Off

How do you warm up? I turn it on and it might start the engine for a few seconds then shut off... How do I know it's ready and warm?

View 9 RepliesCar starts runs rough for a few seconds then shuts off (spark plugs and 2 coils were replaced a few months ago). Coolant reservoir level was way low so I filled to the full line, kept the cap off to cycle. During the time the car starts, the coolant from the reservoir violently "boils" over (out of the reservoir). Huge amount of white smoke from the rear exhaust and a burning smell.
Used Techstream and got the following codes:
Engine and ECT: P0117, P0302, P3190, P3191
Hybrid Control: P0A0F
Intermittently get misfile codes but this time around they did not return.
Whenever it is really cold, o degrees or colder and i use my remote starter, my 2011 Prius starts for about 1-2 seconds and then shuts down. If go into the car and manually start it stays running with no problems. yesterday i tried remote starting it after about 5 hours sitting in -15 degree temperatures and it worked fine but that was after i already manually started it in the morning cause the remote starter didn't work. Why this is happening? it goes against the whole purpose of having a remote starter.
View 19 RepliesI have a '92 Ranger with a 2.3 liter engine. She starts and runs a couple of seconds and shuts down. I'm thinking maybe a fuel pump is not putting out thepressure needed. Gotta go to work tomorrow and gotta get the truck running today.
View 2 RepliesJust finished putting a hydraulic cooling fan on my wife's 01 LS V8 when I try to start it , it starts then shuts off after a few seconds. Do I need to reset the computer? If I do, how do I do it.
View 11 RepliesMy 2001 Prius (230,000 miles) is unusable. I can clear the codes. The engine will start up fine. After a few seconds it starts bucking and jerking as if the engine is trying to engage something that won't turn and finally stalls. It is similar to a manual transmission car's action if you fail to push the clutch in when you stop the car. What the engine is trying to engage? I don't have any scanner to read the codes.
View 7 RepliesI read the forums and found nothing quite like mine.
View 8 RepliesI just bought a new 2015 prius a few days ago. After a couple of days of driving it around, I noticed this clunking noise that lasts about 2 seconds while the car's shutting off its gas engine when the vehicle is at a complete stop. It happens more frequently a few minutes after I started driving the car. When the car is coming to a stop and the 'EV' light is not on yet (only 'ECO' light is on), after the vehicle's made a complete stop, I start to hear this clunking noise (it almost sounds like the noise you hear when you press down your emergency break).
After this noise, I feel the vibration and hear that the gas engine's shut off. I talked to the dealership and they hopped in to hear that noise, and as always, it didn't happen. But as soon as I left the dealership, I hear it again. the car is normal when 'EV' light is on when its coming to a stop (no abnormal noise), but its only when the gas engine shuts off after the car has made a complete stop. And the noise is even louder when the vehicle is on a slope, either uphill or downhill.
I uploaded the video file ....
When I go to turn my car on, I have to give it 3 or 4 tries. The try before it actually turns on goes like this: turn key, engine sounds like it wants to turn, almost starts for a split second, and then shuts off. After this I can usually turn it on.
Usually the rpm's would be around 1.3k on a cold start, but when I finally get it to start it automatically dips below 1k. Then when I go to drive it, it feels like it wants to shut off on that first throttle push. It started with just an issue in cold weather, but has gotten progressively worse. Battery is only a few months old.
A couple of months ago my daughter's Sebring engine began shutting off immediately after starting. We brought the car to my usually reliable mechanic. They couldn't find anything wrong. The problem became more frequent (every 2 to 3 starts) and we brought it back to my mechanic who determined it was the car's computer system. $1700 later the car is ready to be picked up, my daughter gets it after the shop is closed, and it wouldn't start! She left it there, got a ride, and, one week later the Sebring is still at the mechanic's. They told us it starts every time for them and they don't see any problem. After researching on the Internet I thought it might have something to do with the immobilizer but they told me that tested fine. I'm at a loss over what to do.
View 2 RepliesI have a new 2010 Prius so am getting used to a different driving experience. One thing I have noticed is that between 55-65 miles per hour I hear a cyclical engine noise every one to two seconds. It is a hum followed by another hum. The noise is not constant but has a one or two second delay between hums. But this cycle is constant between these two speeds. Is this a normal engine sound? If so, why do I notice it only between about 55-65 miles per hour? A technician at a Toyota dealership told me that the 2010 Prius has 26 onboard computers to detect any problems. He said that if there was an issue a red triangle would appear on the display to alert me to any type of problem. I am about to make a 3,000 mile round trip in the Prius and need to know if this cyclical engine noise is cause for concern or just a normal part of the electric/gas engines operation.
View 4 RepliesSometimes I have to park my car two blocks away in the afternoon, and later in the evening i need to park my car back to the spots in front of my apartment.
EV mode won't be enough to last the two blocks, even at 7 bars. Or sometimes the car won't let me turn on EV mode, even at 7 bars (battery too cold).
So the engine must run if i want to park my car back near my apartment. But the two block distance will not suffice to completely warm up the engine
So the next morning... (20~ Fahrenheit)
My car knocks for a few seconds the next morning the car starts up...
What is the definition of completing the warm up cycle? 120F? My car will turn off the engine after coolant temp reaches 120F (ECO mode).
The first part of diagnosis is to understand how frequently this happens and hopefully find any reproducible patterns. This is an open poll running to the end of October.
ZVW30 - 1.8L Prius...
Is it normal? I tried to find a discussion about this in this forum but couldn't find anything.
When coasting over 35 mph, when the speeds reaches 35, the engine (or ICE as you prefer) is starting for a second then stops. I really don't see why it would do that.
Last week my battery light came on for the first time in years. I have a 185 amp DC Power alternator after dealing with so many bad oem ones.
Anyways, battery light came on when i pulled up to a stop sign. I proceeded to plug my sct x4 in to see what the voltage was, with the battery light it was 11.50. I shut the truck off started it back up, no light and voltage was 13.7. Went through the stop sign got into some more traffic, started to accelerate again and this is when the truck shuts off for the first time. Put it in neutral, and it started right back up.
Several days later it shut off on me two times back to back. It was a cold start, and both times the battery light was on and the truck would die within 30 seconds. Third start it kept running fine.
This past Saturday morning battery light was on, let it idle for awhile then as i tried to park it in the garage it shut off. Started it up, no light so it ran fine. Later when i started the truck it shut off again. So it has shut off on me 5 times in the last week.
Some more background on the truck:
2005, 199k miles
Well maintained (T6 every 5k, filters every 15k, etc.)
The injectors are going bad, it started running rough saturday 1/9/16, just a couple days before it started shutting off.
I used to a sct x4 to pull codes, i have p2237 (if i remember right) which is an intermittent icp signal. I replaced the pigtail and icp less than a year ago because of the same code.
And three codes for glow plug solenoid open on 5, 6, and 7.
No ipr codes
After stepping over gas pedal revving up, when I release the gas pedal I can hear the engine revving up some more instead of slowing down.
When I release the pedal, the engine is still making the noise as if I am stepping on the gas harder for about 3 seconds. when this happened, EV mode will be always not available, and gasoline consumption is increased. Getting lower MPG.
I Have a 93 bronco with a5.8 the truck will start up and run fine for a while and then the engine gets really ruff starts back firing and shuts off it only starts with starting fluid or after it sits for about 30 mins.
View 7 RepliesI recently removed my timing cover due to a coolant leak and found the cover was cracked. I had it welded and reinstalled but i did not remove the crank sensor from the cover while it was being welded. Now the engine starts but shuts right back down. Do the welding may have damaged the sensor and giving me this condition? 1997 4.2 ....
View 1 RepliesI have a Prius 2010, 4 years old with 144.000 km.
The last 3 night we had temp. below freezing point. So every time I started my Prius up at the morning, the engine starts to shake violent, and then automatically shut off the engine with a message on the screen "Check Hybrid System". So after several times I restart the car, it runs normally, still with the message on. The temperature outside was -1 degree Celsius.
So I used my OBD to pick up the codes, which says P3191 - Unknown Error.
What does this error mean at what could cause this problem?
I bought the prius fog lights from and installed them per the instruction guide.
The lights work great but one BIG issue.
I cannot lock my car because after 3 seconds my alarm starts going off. Also whenever I start my car it chirps at me regardless if the alarm has gone off yet.
My car is currently on the road unlocked.
2006 ... HV battery changed over 4 months ago and car ran fine until last week when the car just stopped and won't get ready. Before that incident, the vehicle was running fine all day, while he was returning from the days chores in the evening, it just stopped, dashboard all lit up. After a while, the car started again, and he was able to move it away to the side of the road...just about 2 meters and it stopped again.
