Prius (2010-12) :: Engine Oil Went Dry

Experienced engine oil went dry after about 5000 miles after an oil change? This happened to me for the past 10k miles. I mean when you pull the dip stick out there is no oil in it. I guess I was lucky my engine didn't knock. There is no evidence of any leak on the engine, no oil found in my garage floor either.

Right now the dealer is doing an "Oil Consumption study" on my car. They want me to return after 1,200 miles to recheck the oil.

2010 Prius III 75,230 miles

all oil change done at 10,000 miles intervals (except for the last 10,000 - oil change @ 70,000 miles and again at 74,895 miles due to engine oil being dry)
all scheduled maintenance intervals are done thru the dealer @ 5,000 miles intervals

Prius (Gen 3) :: 2010 Engine Clatter And Check Engine Light Came On

Started my 2010 gen 3 Prius 3 the other day and got a bunch of what I thought was engine clatter and the check engine light came on.

The next time I started it, no noise. Anyways brought it to dealer and they diagnosed it and ordered a new manifold.

The next day when the part arrived, I brought in the car. Talked to the mechanic, a great guy, and he explained what happened. Apparently, the clatter is actually the springs rattling in the clutch mechanism of the starter motor/electric motor and not the valves like I thought.

Prius (Gen 3) :: 2010 - Engine Coolant And Oil Loss

We have a 2010 Prius with ~120k miles and a supposed oil leak; about half a quart for the last 500 miles. Ongoing for some unknown period of time. I haven't seen any oil on the ground for the past week. Furthermore, the engine coolant is very low. The dealer believes the "seepage" is due to head gasket, which would cost $2400 to repair.

This isn't my car (my gen 2 runs great), but it reminds me of my beloved 1996 Subaru which had to be let go because of an expensive head gasket and emissions failure. We expected the Toyota engine to last much longer. So far, the Prius hasn't thrown any check engine lights. Is this unusual? Any signs I can look for that might confirm the head gasket leak or suggest a less expensive diagnosis?

Prius (2010-12) :: Nudge When Engine Turns On

No audible sound but a definite jerk. I will be cruising along at 40, the car running in EV mode, and then the engine turns on & the car momentarily "nudges" backwards (change in acceleration) before resuming its normal smooth operation.

Prius (2010-12) :: Engine Stumbled For A Second When Started

Our 2010 Prius was stored for the winter with a battery maintainer on the 12 volt battery. When the car was started, the engine fired up but made a terrible racket as it stumbled and vibrated, flexing the motor mounts. Within a few seconds it was smooth and quiet.

The drive battery charge monitor looked as the same as when I parked the car (two lines from the top).

The next couple times the engine was started, it stumbled for a second or so, but now is smooth and quiet as usual.

I took my car for the engine knocking at 34xxx miles to the dealer here in NJ. They mentioned it was the EGR that was clogged, so they replaced it. 2 weeks after that, the same incident happened whenever it wasn't allowed to warm up. This time the dealer diagnosed it with having a hole in piston #1? To make the story short, i received my car 2 days ago with a brand new engine from toyota. I tried to re-create the same issue, and it would not happen. Could this be resolved once and for all.

Prius (2010-12) :: Washing Engine Compartment?

I usually washed my previous car's engine compartments with a hand nozzle at a coin-op car wash. I would do it a couple times a year so dust and grease never built up to the point of ever needing deep degreasing.

I looked at the engine compartment of the GENIII Prius and see that there seem to be a lot of exposed orange (high voltage?) wires that would be better off covered with some kind of plastic engine cover near the driver's side. It looks naked and some of the orange wires look like they have bare wires exposed on the outside of the tubing where it connects with clamps nearer to the front of the car. I thought my car must be missing the engine cover, but I found pics online that are the same.

How the synergy drive is working. Why when coming down on a long down hill (mountain pass for example) the car stays at high RPM ? That usually happens when battery is charge to its MAX of 80%.

On my 2010 Prius ll when the engine kicks in, is it normal for the engine to sound noisy, almost like a diesel. It's embarrassing because the car is noted for bring quiet. Is it not? It was like that when I got it, and I took it back and they checked it out, but apparently they thought it was ok. I'm thinking of taking it back again. Just a little over 4000 miles on it.

I'm having a trouble when accelerating at low rpm the engine begins to rattle. Tried removing the connector plug on the egr, to my surprise the rattle is gone but the engine light comes on saying that the EGR circuit is incomplete. Took it to the dealer and they diagnosed it to be the EGR valve opening but failing to close, so they instead proposed to fill in gas with a bottle of their injector cleaner. That made no difference, so tried replacing the EGR valve but again makes no difference. What could the culprit be?

There is a chirping sound coming from the engine of my 2010 Prius. It sounds like a really fast bird chirping and my guess is its probably the serpentine belt. It is there as soon as I start car and the engine is running. 80k miles.

Prius (2010-12) :: Check Engine Light Came On?

Last Fri the check engine light came on so the first thing I did was check the gas cap. It was loose so I retightened it and went on my way expecting the lght to eventually go out. It was still on several hours and a couple of stops later so I called my dealer and explained to my service rep what was going on. He told me to give it a few days and to call him if it didn't go out by today. He said it takes a few days for the computer to reread the system. So we drove it all weekend and it finally went out this morning (Tues). With just under 145000 miles I'm wondering if I should get them to put it on the scanner anyway. It's$130 to do the scan so it's a bit of a ding in the budget. Do the hybrid batts need to be checked,indicator light or not? Here in Ca I think they have a 150000 mi warrenty?

Prius (2010-12) :: Engine Shaking / Vibration 50 - 75 MPG

My 2010 Prius engine shakes/vibrates when the engine is showing between 50-75 MPG on the gauge/meter on the dashboard. There is no vibration when coasting (100 MPG on the gauge/meter on dashboard) or when I am accelerating pretty modestly. Only when accelerating very softly. It started a month or so after I had my spark plugs replaced at 133K miles last June 2015. It has gotten progressively worse. It is especially noticeable once the engine is warm or the outside temperature is warm. During the winter months the vibration was there slightly, but not nearly as noticeable as it is becoming now that warmer weather is here.

At first it was leaking coolant very slowly,then making the rattling engine noise at low rpm then a part flew off while on the highway gushing out oil. Time for a new used engine. Planning on diy if all else fails off the junker. 230,000 miles on odo.

Prius (2010-12) :: Engine Off And Key Not Detecting Error?

I have a 2010 prius. I put in a new stereo system and as part of the process had to disconnect and reconnect the battery. The car drives and the stereo works. However, when I turn the car off and step out of the car with the key fob and shut the door there is one beep in the car and three outside the car and the display reads "key not detected" and it won't let me lock the car with the key fob. It appears to think the car is still running when I leave but it is definitely off. The "key not detected" error message then stays on and will not go off until I go back into the car.

Does the car or key fob need to go through a reset? Is it something I can do myself or do I need to bring it into Toyota? I've tried searching for a fix online and checked the manual and even contacted Toyota and haven't found anything that has worked.

I feel that Bob's thread on the frequency of rough engine starts needs a companion poll; whether it's caused by a warm-up cycle that was cut short or not. It seems to me like this is what is most often fingered as the culprit of the rough engine starts, but feel free to post other theories below.

Prius (Gen 3) :: 2010 Engine Clicking Noise When Accelerating

I bought a used Certified Prius with 49k miles on it. I noticed when accelerating (and the display shows that I am using the ICE but not so much that it shoots up into the "Power" portion on the far right) that the there is a clicking noise coming from the front passenger side of the car.

It sounds very much like this:

I don't hear it when only the electric motor is running, and I don't hear it when I really punch it and the power meter is completely filled up. Its more when the power meter is in the middle of the display and the ICE kicks in and I am slowly accelerating.
