Brought mine to the dealership they can't find the knocking noise. I asked the technician to Test drove it but still can't find the problem. Technician on the passenger side and we test drove it. He was able to hear it, but can't confirm if its coming from the pads or rotors. Its pretty anoying when driving at night when the roads are quiet. You can hear it even with windows close.

View 4 RepliesYesterday I started my 2011 Prius, about 3 seconds later (Im guessing here) I pushed the A/C button, the engine started (at the same time), and I got this horrible grinding, clunking, bucking noise from under the hood. It lasted for about 5 seconds then stopped and everything was fine. Engine ran smooth, A/C was running. I turned off the A/C thinking that might be it and started it again, again everything ran smoothly. I pushed the start button the shut down the car, waited about 15 seconds, pushed it again, all normal, again with the A/C on. I put into drive and moved forward, allowed the engine to start, no problems. Smooth operation, everything normal.
I gather it'd be a good idea to take it in, but want to know how many "on-off cycles" until a problem is erased from memory. I did drive it last night (everything ran just fine) and went through 3 "cycles". What this could be? Bad fuel?? I have a 2011, with about 38k miles on it. This is the second Prius I've owned and have never had a problem before, let alone something like this.
Having issues with Gen3 Prius steering column? I suddenly developed this clunking noise when I rock my steering wheel from left to right. It's steering correctly but I've never heard this noise before....
View 7 RepliesYesterday I had the rear rotors turned and installed some akebono brake pads. I drove it around and it sounded fine. Today my wife drove it to school and called me telling me whenever she came to a stop she would hear clunking noise in the back of the car. I drove it and its true.
I took off the tires again and all 4 bolts are tight on each side. I didn't know the torque specs so I tightened them enough yesterday. I applied the proper synthetic grease on the slide pins, the back of the pads and where the pads touch the caliper bracket.
If I am moving in reverse and tap the brake I hear a clunk from the rear of the car. If I continue in reverse and then again apply the brake then no clunk. If I drive forward and stop, no clunk. If I then shift into reverse again and apply brake I get the clunk again. Had the struts/shocks replaced but no change.

2010 Prius II with 50k miles now.
I have a 2010 Prius which I have had for a couple years. I get this strange noise from time to time that happens while braking. It starts, it will do it for a while, and then go away. When it's doing it, It will also happen after I turn my car off when the engine does it's shutdown phase. Occasionally, when my car is not moving and the engine is off, if I push my brakes it will do it too.
The noise comes from the driver side, by the firewall. the noise is a loud rachety sound, and it does not sound healthy or normal. I took my car to the Toyota dealership 3 different times explaining what was going on, but since it is random in when it happens, they have always told me everything looks normal. (of course I am out of my 1 year warranty too I got when I purchased it used.)
Is this noise something I should be worried about? What it is? Last thing I want to do is burn out some component of my car when I can save it now.
Just recently my Prius has been making a clicking noise when turning right and braking at the same time. It only happens during a right while braking and not while stopping straight or left. I only have 27K miles on it. I'm not due for an oil change for a couple thousand miles and was going to wait until then to mention it to the dealer.

The Noise: As I brake harder to the final stop I hear a grind/bump noise. It is hard to describe. It is abrupt and quick. I don't believe it affects the braking just annoying and doesnt sound normal.
I am noticing a sort of clunk or knocking noise from under the hood when I hit the brakes. I thought it might be the pads, but it comes from under the hood .It only makes the sound on the first touch of the brake, once you have your foot on the pedal it stops the noise. It does this every time on the first application of the pedal. Is this sound normal? I don't recall hearing it when I test drove the car, maybe it's been there all along and I am just now making note of it.
View 5 RepliesThe car is under 25k miles. I have owned for less then 2 years. Recently, I notice a noise coming from the rear every time backing out the drive way. The sounds louder in the winter**. I have gone to 3 different dealers and non of them offered a remedy. Some say they cant reduplicate the issue so I scheduled a test drive with a tech. Was able to duplicate the issue, however the tech says its normal ( pad shift over time) and told me a lot of the newer carmy has the issue. I'm exhausted from going dealer to dealer and no remedy issue. They all said the same thing "its normal & there's nothing they can do".
View 2 RepliesOur 2012 Prius with now 17,000 miles in 8 months has developed a clunking noise when turning the steering wheel, especially far to the right at low speeds.
The first time the dealer identified it as a failed intermediate shaft and replaced it under warranty. Shortly after we told them it was starting to make the noise again, but they claimed they couldn't replicate the sound and anything they heard was normal 'linkage' (whatever that is). Shortly thereafter the clunking progressed so we took it in for now the third time, and they confirmed the problem, spoke with Toyota who said we must have had a bad part, and replaced it again.
2007 Sonata 3.3. Crunching, clunking noise at low speeds, braking or accelerating away from stop lights. Noise disappears at speeds over 25-30 mph. Noise can be replicated by rocking car forward and backward while in park, with engine turned off. Rocking side to side does not reproduce noise. Bouncing car suspension at all four corners does not reproduce noise. Hood open, rocking forward and backwards, noise seems to be coming from behind engine, and with hand on engine motion can be felt. I'm thinking engine mount, but how can I get a good look at it to check?
View 3 RepliesEvery time I turn on my 2010 impreza and slowly drive away i hear a clunking sound coming from somewhere in the front. it happens almost every time i start it up, even if it is warmed up.
Went to the dealer (car is 4 weeks old) did a test drive and it only did it once for them of course even though we tried almost 10 times. What it could be and will take it in for a full day to let it get cold.
Also, a slight rumbling when the car is cold and the blue cold engine light is on? I know the car being cold explain that but you'd think that a brand new car would be free from things like that.
My concern is I have some intermittent clicking/clunking noise. What causes it is if I start out whether fwd or rev. Or if I am going slow in 1st gear and I let off the gas to slow down or press the gas to speed up (btw 1000rpms and 2000rpms) I was told this noise is the clutch engaging or disengaging, which doesn't make sense because when it happens the clutch is fully engaged.
I have had this noise before 2X and there were things that were loose, which were tightened up and the noise went away. This time local dealer told me sound is normal and to keep an eye on it. To me it doesn't sound right cause its noises I didn't notice before.
For the last few weeks (about a month) I have been experiencing a clunking noise/ knock on acceleration coming from either in front of my feet or below my feet (drivers side) ONLY on acceleration and only then from a full stop. I can also feel the clunk as well which leads me to believe it is a transmission mount.....maybe an engine mount. I am taking her to the dealer after work today. we had some very cold weather and I was hoping it was just ice but yesterday and today were well above zero and it is still there and it is EVERY time I accelerate. Which is a somewhat good thing since I will be able to replicate the problem for Hyundai.....
View 17 RepliesI have been frustrated with my Elantra's handling from the time I purchased. I feel that the car is setup poorly and has design/OEM part issues.
I have improved the rear-end "hop" issue by replacing the OEM rear shocks with the KYB Gas-A-Just's -- a big improvement in handling the bumps. But the rear-end solid axle on such a light car is just crap...
I have developed quite a bit of 'clunking' noise in the front suspension.
I am considering replacing the front-end shock-strut assemblies with KYBs -- I'd love to hear if it made a big difference. Also wondering if I should change-out the 'sway bar link' while replacing the shock/struts.
I'm just so frustrated with the way this car handles (I've driven Subaru's, Honda's, and VW's) compared to other cars. I feel it's a combination of low-quality OEM suspension parts, rear solid axle, light weight, crappy electric steering settings, and tires that are too wide and too low-profile for such a light car. (I have the limited with 17 wheels).
Driving 2012 Elantra with 29K on the Meter in AZ with temps at 105 degrees. I am getting a clicking clunking noise. Dealership said Strut mounts and replaced them. Drove it off the lot and the noise was still there. Wont go back to that dealership. Creaking clunking noise more frequently now and has shifted from the passenger side to the driver side predominantly. End links? Axles? Brake assembly, Hub? I first heard it when I went over a speed bump at 3-5 mph. Now it can be heard upon acceleration-deceleration, deceleration in neutral with brake only gets the loudest clunk on the Driver side. Ultimately its now constant on turns, bumps, rough roads & even smooth roads while changing lanes. What is causing this.
View 5 RepliesHave had some issues with some intermittent clunking when I shift or let off the gas. It only clunks when shifting from 1-2 or 2-3 or when I am btw 1500-2500 rpms and let off the gas to coast a bit. There are times when it won't clunk at all or it does it all the time, I can shift fast or slow doesn't matter. The dealership I bought the car from couldn't find anything wrong on my last service. Also when I put the clutch in sometimes I hear a bit of a clunk as well. Also I notice moving the shifter from gear to gear when shifting feels very notchy, but most of the times its smooth.
View 8 RepliesI recently purchased a brand new 2013 Hyundai Elantra and I have noticed that I sometimes when I brake fast but not fully slamming on them from going about 60-80km I hear a loud grinding noise. When this happens the roads are dry so I know that it is not caused by slippery or wet roads.
