I just had the left front strut replaced by an independent shop. Afterwards they noticed that pressing the brakes after backing up produces a single 'clunk' sound from the front. Not sure if it's from the left or right. Also not sure if it was doing this before the repair and didn't notice, or it just started. It only happens once, although I haven't tried backing up twice in a row.

View 5 RepliesWe just bought a 2012 se and my wife has been saying it makes a clunk sound while backing up. Sometimes it does it over bumps. It sounds over my head and behind me when driving it. Almost in the pillar area of the back. Anything I can look at. Not taking it to the dealer yet, not a fan of our local place.

This morning after starting the car and releasing the brakes I heard loud clunking sound (seemed like a belt ?) Turned the car off. tried it again exact same thing, turned if off .. opened the hood to see if I can tell where this was coming from.. started the car and the clunking came for <1 sec and went away, car drove fine brakes worked fine..
I read something regarding temp changes we have had some change but not a drastic change, and the car was driven over the weekend.
I think it becomes more pronounced if the ground is not level. Is this normal?

View 15 RepliesI wanted to pass along the results of a brake issue I encountered in my 2010 Prius (15K miles) and report to interested Prius owners how the issue was resolved.
Problem: In the last second (or so) coming to a complete stop I noticed a few light clunk type sounds, like something was loose up front. I never experienced any degradation in the braking performance.
Weird thing yesterday, noticed a rotational tick sound coming from the right rear wheel during slow backing up with the windows down. Sounded like debris stuck between the dust shield and the rotor. Had that tinny sound. Anyway, no dealer around in the town I was at. Closest is over two hours away and not in the direction of home which was four hours away.
I was visiting friends, and decided to jack the truck up and pull the wheel off and clear whatever debris was stuck in there. Pulled the wheel and didn't see anything. Rotated the hub and could still hear the noise. I pulled the caliper next and made sure nothing was in there. There wasn't. Ok, must be in behind the disc in the parking brake shoe area and making contact with the dust shield. I pulled the caliper mount and then the rotor. Still didn't see any debris or anything foreign. What I did see was a bunch of metal filings on the inner side of the brake shoes all around the backing plate. Also a fair amount of metal filings in the drum portion of the rotor.
Rotated the hub again, and noticed the noise coming from the retaining pin cap on the rear most shoe. It was rubbing against the backside of the hub. As the hub rotated the cap spun and made noise as the spring gave way and turned. This made sense for the noise and the metal filings. The cap was still in place and the pin was not being touched yet by the back of the hub. I reassembled it all and decided the further drive home was not going cause more harm than what was already done.
Dropped off at my local dealer this morning and explained the above. The technician confirmed it as well, and ordered the a new retaining pin. Some how it got out of tolerance and caused itself to be longer than it should have. The tolerance appeared close from the front side shoe that was not rubbing.
My wife told me she was hearing a squeaking sound coming from the front end of our 2006 Prius (90,000 miles) along with a noise when she applied the brakes.

I believe it is the front drivers side but after taking wheel off and taking it to the dealership. I can not find the problem. The dealership states they can't hear it while on several road test, but I have showed them the video clip and they have no idea what it is.
Took my Prius to the local dealer for 50,000 mile service and got a call that both of my front brake pads were worn below the limit and needed replacing. This surprised me as I have read here and elsewhere that some go 100,00+ miles before needed replacement. So I had them replaced and when I went to pick it up, asked them how much was left on the front brakes the last time I was in, which was for my 45,000 service. After looking it up, guy told me they measured 8mm in February, meaning I went from 8mm down to needing to be replaced in the span of like 9 months after driving 5,000 miles. Even the guy at the dealership seemed surprised when we looked it up. Could there be some underlying issue causing abnormally fast break wear? I vaguely remember getting the brakes adjusted related to some TSB in the spring.
View 19 RepliesI have a click/clunk in my front brakes, passenger side. Happens mostly braking and turning right into my driveway. It was recently attributed to a strut bearing, but this was not the case, and their replacement didn't fix the problem.
Dealer has said it's a common noise and occurs after service. The only way to stop the noise is to stop lubing the calipers so they drag.
I say they are full of crap. This has now been going on at least 30k km. I have documented it on every oil change that I can remember (always at the dealer). Any way I should be handling it?
I have started hearing a noise with my brakes. First thing in the morning when I back up and apply the brakes, I get a clunk or pop noise from the left front wheel. It will pop again once I move forward and hit the brakes. It only does the noise one time when I first apply the brakes in either direction. Once the brakes have been used out on the road and are warm, there is no noise when changing directions. I've had this noise in another car I used to have and it was caused by the aftermarket brake pads not being exactly large enough and there was slight pad shifting in the caliper. Being this is a new car and has the OEM pads, I would hope there would be no pad shifting or movement in the calipers.
View 17 RepliesI have a 2009 Corolla S and the symptoms are as follows:
1. Normal forward driving, brakes work fine (and as expected without sound).
2. In reverse, when I apply the brakes I hear a click (clunk) sound from the front brakes. It only makes the sound when I'm going from moving to stopping (IE: I cant just keep pressing the brake once stopped to generate the noise). But if I let myself continue in reverse and press pedal again, it will make the same sound (very repeatable). I don't need to go forward to replicate the sound, I can just stay in reverse, stop (CLICK), continue in reverse, stop (CLICK), etc.
3. The it's noticable in the pedal. I can feel it on the brake with my foot when the noise happens.
4. It happens when I depress the brake pedal about 1/4 down, a gentle stop. And usually happens every time when I back out of my driveway or parking spot.
5. GF's sister's 2009 corolla CE does NOT make this noise in reverse.
6. 20,000 miles, Orig tires/brakes, didn't happen 4ish months ago.
I plan on putting winter tires on next month. Perhaps I'll take a look at the pads to make sure they aren't moving around, but wouldn't I also hear the noise in forward motion? Or when I switch from forward to reverse?
I just had a Safesight micro flush mount camera installed in my Prius 2010 (purchased from Mobile Electronics). I had it installed with a manual switch so that it is either on or off according to my whim. Unfortunately, at this point, the camera seems to add to - rather than subtract from - backing up risks due to spatial distortion and pinpoint representations of objects directly in back of my car.

Pretty much every time I back up and turn, I hear one loud, single pop from the front end. Occasionally, it will happen when I start forward from a stop (if turning) but that's it. It never happens at any other time. I can't decide if it's suspension or steering related. Where could this be coming from?
I have gone through the front end thoroughly and the only issue I find is my passenger inner CV boot has begun to crack and has lost some grease. I would expect a CV failure to click anytime I'm moving and turning. Again, I never hear this noise under any other circumstances.
I have had this problem for a little while. When I would go over bumps I would get a rattling sound coming from the front end. Not necessarily big bumps. A lightly wash board road would do it bad. Tonight at a stop light I lightly moved the steering wheel from one side to the other. Maybe only an inch or so. Going in each direction I heard a knock or dull click. I got under the car and tried moving the tie rods. They seemed pretty tight. Any thoughts? I just want to be prepared when I take it to the dealer for repair.
View 4 RepliesOur 2008 Rav4 (4 cylinder) has on more than one occasion come up with a loud clunking sound when backing up our steep (~ 20% grade) driveway. It feels like it has popped out of gear or even into a forward gear. The first time it happened (a couple of months ago) it was taken directly to the dealer who found nothing. It happened again today - on two attempts to back up the driveway. If the phenomenon correlates with anything, it's higher air temperatures and after a longish (> 30 minute) drive. Any clues?
View 5 RepliesI've got a 2010 3rd generation Prius II with about 38k miles. Earlier today when I was driving around town the car suddenly started making a sort of grinding sound, metal-on-metal sound.
To cut to the chase, I think I've narrowed it down to something in the front right wheel. When I got home I put the car in park and had someone rev the engine. The sound didn't manifest, so I think this rules out the engine, belts, etc.. It doesn't seem to appear until the car gets moving. Almost right away, even at low speeds, the sound crops up.
I had someone drive the car very slowly down the street as I walked around the car to try to pinpoint the location of the sound, and I'm fairly certain it's coming from the front right wheel. It's present even when driving straight, so it's not strictly related to turning, although it is audible when turning as well.
Heard popping noise right front when wife pulled in driveway. Leaving Monday on 1290 mile trip to Erie,Pa. Took to dealer to check out noise. This is result. No hassle at Dealer at all.
View 3 RepliesI test drove a new 2012 Prius Three today and heard an odd whining sound coming from the car. Seemed to be from the front area, but I'm not sure. The salesman said it was "sonar," which was added to the latest models so that pedestrians, particularly those who are hard of hearing will know you are coming.
