Prius (2010-12) :: Clunk In The Rear End When Getting In
Aug 24, 2014
After my 2010 Pri sets over night. When I get in the car I hear a loud clunk in the rear end that sounds like frozen brake drums breaking loose. What could this be?? Its summer in Ohio.

I've had my 2012 RX 350 for more than a year now. From the very beginning I had this occasional problem: Stopping fairly quickly (but NOT any sort of panic stop) at a small downhill, I sometimes would get a rather substantial clunk somewhere in the rear. It sounded pretty serious--axle or suspension, I thought. Of course when I first brought it to my dealer. I couldn't duplicate it. But then, I convinced the service manager to send a mechanic to my house, where there's a place where it often happens.
Finally, he heard the clunk . The service manager did some research and concluded I was hearing an "over-extension of the suspension". He sent another RX350 to my house, and indeed, we were able to replicate the clunk at the same place, in that different vehicle. On the other hand, a friend, who also has an RX350 said he never had the problem.
The service manager says there is nothing abnormal about the clunk. This is hard for me to believe. It's a really substantial clunk and in my 45 years of driving I've never experienced anything like it.

Just recently got a 2011 Prius II and i love it. Only having one issue. Sometimes when i hit a bump with the windows open, i get a metallic clunking noise, but if i hit a bump immediately after it, I don't hear it again. Maybe 5 minutes or so later (not exact at all), If i hit another bump it will happen again. Seems to be on both sides of the car. Car has 5k miles so I'll be bringing in for service next week. Does this sound normal or is it something i need to have looked at?

I had the weirdest noise in my prius this morning when I started it. This was the first really cold morning so far ( 24) and Ive had the car a few months now, new to me 2010. When I started it, it went clunk clunk clunk like something was spinning in the gear box and hitting something as it came around, possibly from generator box too. Car was in park when this happend and during the initial startup. Then it quickly got less and went away within about 20 secs. This wasn't some light sound either, pretty loud and If I would have got under the hood fast enough I could have tracked it down maybe. Also on a side note the previous day I got a weird yellow light on for no reason under heavy acceleration. It was the yellow light with 4 tires in it showing sliding. Anyway it was on for about a min then went out. Dry road no sliding of any kind. I continued to drive the car 140 miles today without an issue.

The past week I drove the 1800miles. This afternoon I went out, pushed power button, get out and clean windshield off and ICE turns on with this clunk clunk noise, shook the car like a sob too. Checked oil and it showed a clear metallic gray/Black tint with end the light tan oil.

Hearing a slight clunk noise inside the back of thier gen 2? I've taken apart all the paneling used foam tape to secure things and took apart the spare tire area etc and the clunk persists. It seems to vary intensity every time I close the rear hatch.

I just had the left front strut replaced by an independent shop. Afterwards they noticed that pressing the brakes after backing up produces a single 'clunk' sound from the front. Not sure if it's from the left or right. Also not sure if it was doing this before the repair and didn't notice, or it just started. It only happens once, although I haven't tried backing up twice in a row.

I only notice this when I back the car from the garage and come to a stop before going forward. It is a very metallic clunk. It sounds like its coming from the rear passenger side but I am. not 100% certain. It happens when I actually stop before switching to drive.
It is a 2013 Two. 30,000 miles on it.

Lately I've noticed a momentary clunk or vibration in the steering column when turning the steering wheel while leaving a parking spot. It's not the same as hitting the end points of the steering range. It feels like some looseness in the coupling of the steering column.
It seems to happen when maneuvering in a parking lot, like after backing out of a parking space and then straightening out the wheels to go forward. It is random when it happens, only a couple of times a week so far. Should I take this in to be checked?

I have a 2010 prius 2;
This morning after starting the car and releasing the brakes I heard loud clunking sound (seemed like a belt ?) Turned the car off. tried it again exact same thing, turned if off .. opened the hood to see if I can tell where this was coming from.. started the car and the clunking came for <1 sec and went away, car drove fine brakes worked fine..
I read something regarding temp changes we have had some change but not a drastic change, and the car was driven over the weekend.

I wanted to pass along the results of a brake issue I encountered in my 2010 Prius (15K miles) and report to interested Prius owners how the issue was resolved.
Problem: In the last second (or so) coming to a complete stop I noticed a few light clunk type sounds, like something was loose up front. I never experienced any degradation in the braking performance.

Every car has its "Persian flaw," but this one irks me. A bird pooped on the car (in several places), and I always addressed the problem by laying wet paper towels over the mess to "pre soak" and then I could wipe it away without damaging the finish underneath.
Well, this time, a bird must have had a healthy diet of grit because that poop acted like sandpaper and put nice scratches into the finish before I could stop what I was doing.
It's not that obvious, but it bothers me. I don't want to attempt to buff out or polish out the scratches without knowing what WILL do the job right. I don't want to make a bigger mess trying to fix it.

I bought a used 2010 model and here's a pic of my rearview mirror. Please note the base of the mirror assembly and the location where it's attached to the windshield. Seems kinda low to me. Can other 2010 owners chime in if your mirror is attached at the same spot (or not)?

Walked into my garage where my 2011 Prius (have owned for 11 months, now at ~78K miles) had been sitting for about 4-5 hours after being used for a 4 mile trip. I heard a quite battery hum from the rear for about 1-2 minutes. I've heard this before... (it is not unlike the hum you hear in the front when opening the driver's door after the car has been sitting a bit.... and I've noticed that the duration of this front hum seems to be correlated with the time since last drive?). No clue what is was...

I bought the car yesterday as certified used, but today I noticed some tiny scratches on the rear fender. It looks like it was scratched before, and the bumper is repainted, but not the fender. I can hardly see the scratches nor do I care too much about it, but I am going to take the car to GEICO for photo inspection, and I worry if they will deny coverage if someone hits this part of the car.
The first photo is just down to a bit of white primer, the second photo shows a deeper scratch at the corner but I am not sure if it is deep to primer or metal. This may be just a small touch-up job without taking it off. Anyway I will take the car to a shop for an estimation before I go for GEICO's inspection.

I have a motorcycle carrier than plugs into a trailer hitch on my PIP. It drags the rear end. Is there a way to stiffen the rear shocks? Is there any shocks that I can vary the pressure in maybe by air?

I'm currently at ~4300 mi, and I'm probably going to cash in on my free oil change at 5k and have the dealer do the radio software update to fix the 87.7 issue, and have them look into this as well.
Here's what happens. Get into the car after its been sitting long enough to completely cool down. Put it in Drive, take the brake off, and start driving. The first time you apply the brake, you hear a "clunk" from the rear axle, sometimes quiet, sometimes louder. After that it will not make the noise again until it has been sitting and cooled all the way down.
The only thing I can think of off the top of my head is there's something messed up with one of the parking brake shoes.

2000 Camaro, v6 auto, 103000 miles, 2 years ago car started making a roaring noise in the rear. the faster i go the louder it gets. if i let off the gas it almost goes away. at high speed over 90 the rear vibrates. noticed today that if i push on rear fender there is a clunking noise coming from rear wheel. checked lug nuts and they are tight. Is it unsafe to drive?

My 2010 Prius was hit while parked. The left side was wiped out and the whole car was pushed sideways about 2-3 inches, with the parking brake on. Toyota checked out the car and said everything looked fine. But there is this odd sounding humm coming from the rear of the car. Toyota says that is normal. Is this true?
