My dad has a 2010 prius IV. He told me the other day when he backed out of the driveway and put it in drive he experienced a clanking noise coming from the engine. He said it sounded like metal rattling around. It lasted about 30 sec. then went away. What this may be?? It hasn't happened since.

Yesterday morning it was a rainy and damp weather around 3-4 degrees Celsius when I started my Prius. Usually I start it up, get out and have a cigarette or something before driving so that the ICE has a minute or two to warm up. Immediately after the ICE fired up I heard a very loud clanking and vibrating sound. I immediately shut the car down, checked all fluid levels and read the codes. No codes, no warning lights. Fired it up again, same thing. This time I opened the hood and went to see what's going on. The ICE made this noise and vibrated like hell. After a few second though the clanking and vibrating slowly went away and it started to sound normal again.
Scared the living crap out of me! This hasn't happen before or since. I had like 2-3 40km drive cycles after that on the same day with no problems. The day before I had to move the car just a bit, and when doing that the ICE came on just before I turned the car off. No codes, no warning lights. First thing that comes to mind was a misfire that vibrated the engine like crazy, maybe due to the damp weather effecting spark plugs or a flooded cylinder that was due to the only a few seconds of engine running the day before.
I have a 2010 Prius 2 with 58K. A few weeks ago, mainly when turning right, my car makes a strange sound on the driver side (never on the passenger side). This noise is not very loud and almost sounds like two chains hitting. It usually makes this noise when I turn, but not every time I turn, and it usually happens when I first start driving.
View 3 RepliesWhile the emergency brake was set, I happend to lean against the rear driver side of the the car and was surprised to hear a clanking, slapping noise coming from underneath the rear of the car; seemingly near the left rear wheel. What I think I'm hearing is the emergency brake cable (I assume this is a rear wheel cable brake) slapping against the vehicle frame or wheel axle. Even opening and closing the rear passenger door caused the cable to slap against the car.
This got me to experiment a bit, so I rocked the car back and forth and side to side. It's the side-to-side movement that causes the noise. The emergency brake works when set. The noise disappears when I release the emergency brake.
What is that little noise coming from the engine bay when you unlock and open the drivers door?
View 14 RepliesMy 2010 Prius V just past the 24000km mark. I have a buzzing noise coming from the engine bay during startup. It happens when the interior fan is on. You can hear it clearly after you start the car, during the silence of the "boot up", before the ICE kicks in. I can't be sure if it continues to buzz after that because the sound of the ICE drowns it out. However, If I shut off the fan during the boot up, the buzz disappears. Finally, if I leave the fan off and start the car, there is no buzz.
During a recent oil change, a hybrid technician claims that this is normal. It used to happen infrequently but now it is consistent, so if it was normal, I should have heard it when the car was new.
I just put on some new wheels and tires (19" VMR RS4 reps) and there is a weird clanking noise coming from the front left wheel when I am going around 10 mph. It doesn't happen when I'm moving faster, but I have checked it out and don't see anything rubbing or hitting any metal pieces. Could it be the suspension or something else? I haven't heard it around any of the other wheels.
View 12 RepliesWhenever I accelerate I hear a metal clanking noise as if there was something stuck underneath the front of the vehicle. I pulled over and checked the undercarriage and did not see anything and then checked under the hood. My coolant was extremely low and the oil was in a normal range. What could be the cause of this metal clanking noise whenever I accelerate. Also I have white smoke coming from exhaust when I accelerate as well.

My 2.4L engine is making a clanking noise while running. When I checked the oil level today, it was low by about 1.5 quarts. There's no check engine light.
Car has 74K miles now. I purchased the car two years ago with 35K miles. I have always performed regular maintenance myself. The car had its oil control valve replaced at 55K miles.

Bought truck new in 1997, 4 cylinder, 5 speed, manual transmission, 127K miles. In January developed a clanking noise in the engine area. Do not have a tach but hear the sound when engine is cold. Raise rpm up to whatever is equivalent to 20 mph in second gear. Anything much above or below this speed, sound goes away. Hear it the loudest when I am under the vehicle. Sounds like marbles in the exhaust system. My mechanic said it is not in the exhaust but in the front engine area. Said this vehicle is know to have this problem and there is no inexpensive fix. Sound goes away when engine runs for about 15 minutes.

View 1 RepliesI have a 2012 Elantra sedan and I have a ticking noise coming from the engine.......I have had the noise since new.......but it was very faint.......it has gotten worse with time........I had mentioned this to the dealership when it was new but they said it was normal engine noise! It sounds like the older cars used to sound when there was a valve clearance problem.....but with the advent of overhead cams.....I'm not sure what the problem is.........78,000km on engine!
View 8 RepliesToday was the first time I was in my RX without the radio since I bought it. I have a 2011 RX CPO with 65000kms on the odometer.
When the vehicle is idling there is a tick-tick noise coming from the engine area that does not go away. I initially thought this noise was due to it being 0 Degree C but the noise continued for the duration of my 45 minute drive. Later in the day the noise was consistent was did not silence.
Since new my Prius V has had a metallic clattering sound that comes from underneath the car. This can be replicated when driving over lane divider dots on a quiet street with the windows down. To investigate, I put the car on ramps and looked around; I was almost certain the sound was coming from a thin aluminum heat shield that is just behind the engine. Tapping this shield made a similar sound to what I heard coming from under the car while driving over bumps and such. The shield is poorly attached with those "fun" push pin fasteners that seem to be liberally deployed all over the undercarriage. I decided to re-attach the shield with a judicious circular application of silicone under each of the holes in the shield and let it dry. The clattering sound I heard previously when tapping the shield was gone. Out for a test drive and still there!
I just had the first service done, and of course the tech couldn't hear it on his test drive. Unfortunately I was pressed for time, so I wasn't able to take a test drive with the tech. I will drive the tech around next time and demonstrate it.
Parked Prius making awful sound from brakes. Could it be Suspension? However, I am not sure how to describe this one.
View 10 RepliesI was driving today with no music on and noticed something strange. I heard something "roasting" in the backseat...and looks like the noise comes from the battery vents. It sounds more like "roasting" noise than fan noise. Do you know if the battery was overheating?
View 7 RepliesI have noticed that when the car was in park today right after I started her I heard a semi loud tapping noise coming from the engine... It slowed down when I turned the wheels or played with the brakes... As I went into drive the noise went away after about 20 feet of driving..
What this could be? Is it normal... Just bought the car last week with 45K miles on it and just want to make sure if it is a normal noise or not or whether I should bring her into the dealer.
58,000 miles. Slight "rattle" - very low noise level -coming from area around the glove boxes, or passenger front door, or from outside the car..

View 3 RepliesIt is gone at 120K. Thought it could be the tire, so rotated but noise still comes from driver side rear. Car is a daily driver but we do not live in snow belt, so cannot blame it on salt.
