I was pulling out from a side road onto a much busier road. I had a small gap, put it in pwr mode, and hit the accelerator. Much to my surprise I actually chirped the tires. I only use eco mode, so I am not used to how quickly it gets into the ICE when in pwr mode. Consider me impressed with how this car can actually do it all
View 2 RepliesI have a concern about my 2010 Prius V(five). I've noticed some issues lately that may all tie in to one big problem.
1. My ev mode will not work at all. My battery will be fully charged and not in "B" mode. Turning car off and on will not work.
2. Engine will not turn off when coming to stops. Mind you when the battery is above 3 lines.
3. Throttle response feels like it's in PWR mode(super sensitive) but the engine is leggy. If I floor it for a sec the RPMS are super slow to come down.
4. The Eco line is quick to go in PWR portion and I'm not pushing it any harder than I was before all of this started. It seems like when I push the gas it skips the electric and automatically pulls from the engine.
At what pressure the TPMS light is activated? I noticed my daughters tires were low and when I checked they were at 15 PSI and no warning. Its a 2010 MY Prius III .
View 7 RepliesI have a 2011 Prius. I put 15" aftermarket summer wheels on it and a vibration appeared The wheels and tires have been rebalanced many times. Wheel alignment has been done, wheels replaced, tires replaced but the vibration is still there. I am now back to the OEM and the vibration is still there.
View 12 RepliesSo I bought a used 2010 Gen 3 with ~26,000 miles on it in July 2013. I started out getting 48-52mpg depending on where I was driving. I live in Raleigh, NC and I did notice a drop in drop in MPG over the winter ranging between 44-48mpg but the mpg never rose again as the months warmed and I averaged 44-46mpg for most of the summer. After changing my tires a few weeks ago I've dropped to about 40mpg regardless of where or how I drive. I bought Pirelli P4 Four Seasons 195 65R15 91T and have them inflated to the levels recommended by Toyota. 35/32 or something like that. Is it the tires or is there some other possible issue?
View 19 RepliesMy Bridgestone Ecopias(Ep20s) have 26,000 miles on them and are wore on the outer edges. Both sides are worn. I heard this may be to under inflation. I go to Discount Tire and they set all my tires at 37psi. Is this too low. The door says 35 front and 33 rear. Do I need more air for them to wear evenly? Also I have ordered Michelin Energy Savers. Discount will set them at 37, or should I add more air so this type of wear does not happen? I plan on getting an alignment just in case, but really don't think I need one. There is no pull to either side and the wheel is straight.
View 19 RepliesWhen I had this set of tires rotated and balanced for the first time I picked up a vibration. I can feel it through the steering wheel and the floor, it starts about 40 or 45 mph. It is not severe but it is annoying. The tires are Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus size 215/45-17, they had about 9K miles on them when I had them rotated. Before they were rotated they were as smooth as glass.
View 18 RepliesI got two new Bridgestone ER300 Ecopia to replace two on the front. Trouble is after getting the tires fitted the car pulled to the left quite badly and my mpg's went down! Hmmm. I checked the tires in case a non low rolling resistance tire had been fitted by mistake, but they were correct. I then checked the pressures, which again were correct. So I guessed the tracking must have been out so booked it in with the dealers for checking. After a couple hours and a couple test drives later they advised the tracking is fine and the tires are fine. Odd.
Just filled up for the second time since the new tires and I'm struggling to get anywhere near 50 mpg! Even after a few long trips where I know from past experience that I could get mid 60's easily. I've inspected the tires closely and note that one of the new ones is made in Italy and the rest are from France. All the loadings, ratings and the type are the same, just made in a different factory and it is a slightly lighter colour compared to the French ones.
Last October I needed new tires, so I had Michelin Defenders put on my 2011 Three in place of the OEM Firestones. The Michelins perform well and are nice and quiet, but...
My gas mileage (both indicated on the dash and calculated) has dropped by about ten percent. In researching the two brands of tire, I found that the OEM Firestones are rated at 836 revolutions per mile, and the Michelins are 839. I'm wondering if this is the reason for the apparent change in mileage.
The car was purchased used with 18" wheels already on. After driving for about 6 months, I started noticing the road noise getting very loud. I took the car to a tire shop and they told me that there was some uneven cupping in the middle of the wheels, which is usually caused by worn out shocks making the wheel bounce up and down.
I replaced all 4 shocks, then replaced all 4 tires. Now its much more smooth than before, and is very silent on nicely paved roads. however, I notice when there's roads which any imperfections (like fixed streets with tar.. or uneven pavements, or when your tire hits the freeway markers to keep you in the lane) its heard very loud from inside the car and creates an almost *thud* sound when it does.
I assumed that the problem was that the car had 18" wheels. So recently I swapped the wheels out with stock 15" from Toyota, but somehow the road noise is still very apparent. I sat in a friend's Prius, same year, and I could tell that it was handling the uneven pavements much softer.
What could be the problem now? Is there anything else that needs to be replaced?
Slow speeds. I am noticing a roaring noise. Almost like a big truck with oversize tires. It doesn't seem to change turning left or right. I rolled each wheel and didnt get any play. Rotors and pads in great shape. I did notice when one wheel is jacked up and I turn it (clockwise/CCW) it seems like there is a lot of play...maybe in the tranny or just the axle.
View 1 RepliesMy 2010 has no ACC mode. Took it to dealer to have key fob programed and dealer could not put car into ACC mode.
I'm second owner. This is not an issue of how to put in ACC mode. It does not enter ACC.
I didn't see anything in my search. Why is EV mode not available sometimes? i know for sure it isn't available when i start the car. But sometimes else it is not available. And I don't mean "excessive speed" or "low battery"

View 12 RepliesWhen I start my car at the beginning of the day I can never put my prius in EV mode even when the battery (battery at half) is not in low.
Also, as I am driving down my small street for about a few mins then it let me put in EV mode. When I do put it in EV mode, I only can drive up to 10mph and it cuts off.
This is when I'm already been driving for a good period of time like 30 mins. For example when coming from work my battery is charged pretty well because I'm on the freeway for about 24 miles. I put my prius on EV mode and I'm able to go up to 25 mpg. How come I am able to go 25mpg in EV mode after being in the prius for at least 30 mins and when in the morning in EV mode only at 10mpg?
Four months after I bought my Prius III last year, we discovered that the left rear wheel was so out of alignment that it ruined the tire in 5,000 miles, and then also ruined the one put in its place during regular tire rotation. Toyota replaced the entire set of tires, and I checked the alignment this fall and again this spring when I took off the snow tires.
Everything looked fine. Nevertheless, when I rotated the tires today, the tech reported that ALL FOUR tires were substantially cupped on the inside, after only 6,000 miles on this set of tires. Road noise has become much higher. It doesn't make sense that all four wheels got similarly out of alignment in just two months.
I've been driving an 2007 Prius unitl last week, when I upgraded to an 2010 model. I'm very happy with it so far.
View 15 RepliesI notice my Prius sometimes turns-off the engine & runs pure EV when cruising at 40-45 miles/hour. Sometimes for a few miles! That seems very inefficient vs. taking power directly from the engine:
- Gasoline--->burn---> transmission--->wheels
- 1 state transition (chemical-to-mechanical)
- Gasoline--->burn--->transmission--->generator--->store in battery--->extract from battery--->motor--->wheels
- 5 state transitions
Prius Five 2012 fully loaded in Blizzard Pearl. A/C keep changing mode from face/head only to feet every 2-3 minutes on its own. Auto button light is off and this continues..... I've stumped all the dealers, no one has a fix.
View 11 RepliesNew owner of a used 2010 here, and I cannot get the car into accessory mode. It should be simple, press the power button without your foot on the brake, right? but no... it just doesn't do anything.
But here's the thing - the car is a former rental (Zipcar), and I wonder if they somehow disabled accessory mode to avoid dead-battery issues?
The other (less appealing) possibility is that they broke it accidentally somehow while wiring up their magical gizmo that allowed Zipcard holders into the car with no key... but that doesn't make as much sense to me.
I cannot figure out what to do when cold weather comes and I want heat in the car. I've never owned or driven a hybrid. Looks like there are two alternatives:
Set the internal temperature setting to whatever warmth I want, disable the "Automatic" setting, and assume that outside air will be drawn in and warmed by the engine and circulated inside.
Use "Automatic" and let the A/C setting automatically run to warm the air to the temperature I set.
