Prius (2010-12) :: Car Started By Its Own
Jul 18, 2010
I just got my new 2010 Prius and very happy with it, but I have experienced three different times when the darn car started by itself. I seriously doubt that I left the car on. Each time, the car has been sitting out in the hot sun with temperatures in the high 80's to low 90's. The gas engine has gone from off to definitely on. It happened again today and I went over and looked at it the dash read "Ready" and all systems were "go" on the dash. One of the times I could have sworn the car turned itself off (I was in shock so not 100% sure).

I have a 2012 prius, mid afternoon today, my wife and I were standing in the yard, when the prius just started all om its own. Now I"m not aware of any remote starter installed in this car. The buttons on my "key" that was in my pocket at the time include, lock, unlock, and a red alarm button. Whats happening here?

Our 2010 Prius was stored for the winter with a battery maintainer on the 12 volt battery. When the car was started, the engine fired up but made a terrible racket as it stumbled and vibrated, flexing the motor mounts. Within a few seconds it was smooth and quiet.
The drive battery charge monitor looked as the same as when I parked the car (two lines from the top).
The next couple times the engine was started, it stumbled for a second or so, but now is smooth and quiet as usual.

After years of enjoying my Prius, driving it all around California and getting about 70k miles on it, it finally went haywire today when the car didn't start. Let me explain.
When I tried turning on the car, it didn't do anything and felt resistance from the brakes. I noticed that the interior lights were dimmer than usual, so I tried pressing the Power over and over again. Unfortunately, it didn't start.
Panicked, I frantically tried to get my manual out of my trunk, only to have the lights actually fully turn on. Puzzled, I turned on the car and, sure enough, it started. But I'm an idiot and turned it off and got stuck with the same problem again.

Twice in the last month, my 2010 Prius has made this incredibly loud noise when the engine first started up. The noise continues for a minute or two, and then stops. The car then runs as normal. I brought the car to my dealer, who after a brief looking-over could find no reason for it. I shot a video of the car making the sound the 2nd time it happened and brought it to the dealership with me to play for the mechanic. No one who heard it there ever heard anything like it before.
It has been really cold here this winter, so "cold oil" was once thought, but was dismissed as unlikely. The car gets 0-20 oil.

I recently bought a 2011 Prius two from an independent car sales shop. After 2k miles, I thought I'll replace with Mobil 1 synthetic. I'm doing the oil change for the first time and made a rookie mistake. Car on ramps, assuming the car was turned off (in fact, it wasn't), I removed the drain bolt and filter.
Oil was almost drained and suddenly the engine turned on. I scurried over and turned it off, probably in 6 or 7 seconds. Car runs fine now. But, I just want to know what damage my silliness would have caused the engine.

We bought a new 13 level 3 with sunroof 9 weeks ago. It has been to the dealer 3 times because
1. the bluetooth kept failing and had to be repaired often. (it would lock any phone so we could not make or receive calls)
2. The radio started locking up and had to be powered down to work again.
The dealer replaced the radio and bluetooth by removing the parts from a new car after Panasonic & Corporate would not supply tracking # after claiming shipment of the replacement parts.
The new radio and bluetooth work nicely but the reception SUCKS. We live in a rural area and the radio station we normally listen to is too weak to tune to. Every other car we own (that's 6 cars folks) we can listen to this station.

My 2011 Prius has the abs light and traction control light on. The car has sat 4 days I go and start it and the lights are on. Not blinking steady. I just filled the car Friday could it be the gas cap not tight?

I have a 2010 prius and today when i was driving the car it started shaking every time I brake and after a little bit. I realized that the car was having trouble shifting from battery to engine and engine to battery and once the battery runs out the car shuts off and when I start it again it starts in engine mode and charges the battery..

I got in, stepped on the brake pedal and press the power button. Then the Prius ICE started, it started clanging and violently shaking the entire car. The clanging was sounded like metal on metal or something, it was loud and it was like the engine was seizing up. I stepped outside and the whole front end was buckling up and down. From my perspective, it seemed like the car wanted to lurch forward if I didn't have the parking brake engaged. I had Park engaged and also the parking brake on. I thought it would go away but it persisted. I turned off the car and immediately restarted. When the ICE started the 2nd time it felt a bit rough but finally the clanging noise went away. I didn't have time to look on my scanguage for any codes during the event. Did this cause any permanent damage?

It seems like the rear camera has suddenly started to point down more that it used to. We have three Prius's and none of the older one are like this. The dealer tells me he hears this problem all day long and there is nothing he can do about it.

Our Prius is only a year old with less than 9,000 miles. Everything has been fine with it and then yesterday I took it out of the garage and started to drive and there was the most horrendous grinding/squealing/scraping noise as I started moving from the front passenger side (UK passenger, so left looking out).
I stopped the car and had a look, as at first I thought I was dragging something, but nothing to be seen. Checked the parking brake was definitely not engaged. I then thought perhaps something is caught in the brake pads and it will go in a bit, however even hard braking didn't seem to change the noise at all.
Carried on (I was going about 7 miles), and as I drove it would gradually get quieter, and then get louder again, with the occasional "clang" sound almost like a spring under tension suddenly moving.
Towards the end of the journey it had started to go quieter again, but with the window down you could still hear constant squeal/grind.
Parked the car, was away for an hour, came back and set off home and the noise was totally gone. Entirely silent all the way back home! Now I don't know what to do - whether it will come back, or whether I should take it in to garage for them to look (even though it's now not making any noise).

Our 2010 Prius has about 57K miles on it (mostly highway and rural commuting). The rear brakes just started to make some noise the other day at low speeds. It sounds like a light metallic squeal, similar to a brake pad wear indicator. It only occurs at low speeds and in reverse. Last time I checked the pads, they had lots of life, but that was in the spring.
I'd like to take apart the brakes to service them, but I don't know if this is a DIYer job on a Pruis. I have tons of experience on auto repairs, and have done hundreds of brake jobs (I also perform auto restoration as a hobby and have done almost every type of mechanical work on a car). So I am not really worried about my skill, but I am worried about knowing the proper procedure to do the repairs on a Pruis.

I got a braking issue today and I'm not able to drive my car anymore. I have a 2010 Prius with a continuous beeping sound, ABS and warning lights ON. I can hear a small sound (pulsing, cranking, vibrating) in the engine compartment after the hybrid system is started. I guess this is the actuator.

Was about three blocks from home when the front of the car started making a horrific metallic scraping sound as the front wheel turned. I mean LOUD. Did a quick look for something stuck in the wheels somewhere but nothing. It's not like a branch stuck in the wheel sound, but scraping a shovel on a steel beam kind of sound. Braking seems to change the makeup of the sound, but did not stop it. Parked it in the garage.
I pulled the left wheel off, looked and looked, and looked. Nothing. Fear and sadness setting in. Everything looked normal....except....a faint line on the rotor very near the inside edge. Got a mirror and looked some more, and there, wedged on the inside edge of the pad's metal part and the rotor, was a rock the size of a bb. At most. Got a small screwdriver and hammer and popped it out. Done. Sheesh.
Seriously it was so loud it was amazing. So store in file folder for future reference if needed.
The line can be felt barely with a fingernail and is half the width of a pencil lead, and goes under the innermost 1/8" of the pad. I'm thinking do I want the dealer to pull and turn it, or is it going to affect my braking at all. Pretty much gonna leave it be I think.

My alarm went off for no explainable reason today. My car is parked in front of my house and all of a sudden I hear an alarm going off. Now, I've never heard my own alarm so I wasn't even aware it was mine until it kept going and I realized it might be mine. So I went to look out the window and I couldn't decipher where the sound was coming from because there's a lot of cars around here
So for the heck of it, I grabbed my fob and kept pressing buttons to see if it would go off. I was so flustered and nothing went off so I thought it wasn't mine. Then I held down the red button and it finally went off.
Does it mean someone tried to open my door? What warnings should I look for on the dash when I go in there for the first time after shutting off the alarm?

My 2010 Sportwagen TDI has recently started to misfire. This only seems to happen when I'm going easy on the throttle. It also seems to happen after about 10 seconds after I've come to a stop and began moving again. It only appears to misfire once, then it goes away for a couple of minutes, then it sometimes returns. I haven't been able to track it to a specific RPM, speed, or gear, but it does seem to be more frequent around 1600-2000 RPM and about 30 mph. It feels more pronounced in the lower gears, but this is probably due to the gear ratio effect. There are no engine lights. I have not taken it in for a dealer scan. It has 32,000 miles, I always use name-brand diesel along with Diesel Kleen at every fuel up.

I recently had an accident which was absolutely scary. I was driving on a residential block and my steering became loose and started spinning. It was continuously spinning towards the right and my car scratched up a parked car until I finally was able to press the brakes and put it in park. After keeping it in park the steering wheel kept spinning out of control and didn't stop until the car was powered off.

I am a proud owner of a 2012 Elantra GLS(auto 1.8) and i like to use the sport mode "Shiftronic" all the time. When I started using it, i noticed a nice quick woosh sound almost like a mini turbo, only when i shift at 5500 to 6000 rpm. it sounds like air pressure releasing when i shift at high rpms.
obviously, i do not have a turbocharged engine, but its a pretty loud sound, people can hear it outside of my car if within 15 feet. I have noticed this for the past year and a half but never found out what it was. I will say that I have added a short ram intake into the car, but I have heard this sound way before I put the intake in. There was no change of sound when I added the intake, so it is not intake related. And I know what intake sound is. note it only happens when shifting at high rpms, with my foot still on the gas pedal. it gets louder with higher rpms. it sounds like compressed air being released. Like air is building with rpm, then releasing at shifts. Im not mechanically inclined but I believe that is what it is.
What exactly is causing the sound(what parts) and if it could be stressing my car if done too often?
